ASSIGNMENT 1
DUE DATE: 25.09.2017
MARK: 5 % OF FINAL MARK
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

1. A pipe, 200 mm outer diameter is carrying steam at 3000C. In order to reduce the heat loss, it is
insulated with a material, whose thermal conductivity varies with temperature(0C) as
k=0.06(1+0.002 T) W/m0C
If the insulation thickness is 55 mm and temperature of outside surface is 300C, calculate:
(a) the heat flow rate per meter length of pipe, and
(b) temperature at the mid thickness.

2. The inside and outside surfaces of a hollow sphere of radii r1 and r2 are maintained at uniform
temperatures of T1 and T2, respectively. The thermal conductivity of spherical material varies as
k= k1 + (k2-k1) [T-T1/T2-T1] W/m K
0
Where T is in C. Derive an expression for rate of heat transfer through hollow sphere.

3. Find steady flow heat flux through a composite slab made of two materials A and B. Thermal
conductivity of two materials vary linearly with temperature as:
kA=0.4(1+0.008T)
kB=0.5(1+0.001T)
Where T is temperature in oC
The thickness: LA=10 cm, LB=5 cm.
The inner side temperatures of slab A is 6000C and outside temperature of slab B is 300C.

4. A rectangular aluminium fins of 0.5 mm square and 12 mm long are attached on a plane plate
which is maintained at 800C. Surrounding air temperature is 220C. Calculate the number of fins
required to generate 35X10-3W of heat. Take K=165 W/m K and h=10 W/m2K. Assume no heat loss
from the tip of the fin.

5. Ten thin brass fins (k=100W/mK), 0.75 mm thick are placed axially on a 1 m long and 60 mm
diameter engine cylinder which is surrounded by 270C. The fins are extended 1.5 cm from the
cylinder surface and the heat transfer co-efficient between cylinder and atmosphere air is 15 W/m2K.
Calculate the rate of heat transfer and the temperature at the end of fins when the cylinder surface is at
1600C.

NOTE:
Do the problems in a systematic way.
Include the units in the calculation.
State any assumptions.
