1. Installation Instructions
1.1. Requirements
You should have a valid License Agreement with The Big Lean Simulation Library,
LLC. before using the models, PDF, and videos.
First, you need to install Java if it is not already installed. It does not matter which
Java version (32 or 64 bit) you have installed as long as it works on your machine.
Please go to this site to get Java and the installation instructions:
www.Java.com
Note: Even if you have a 64 bit Operating System, the default Java installation may
be 32 bit if your browser is 32 bit.
The simulation software and models do not need to be installed. These instructions
assume you have all the supplied files in a folder called Instructor Files. It is a good
idea to make a back-up folder.
You also see the JaamSim license and this Instructor's Guide.
3. Launching a Model
For Windows:
Open the Models – 32 Bit or Models 64 Bit folder that corresponds to the Java
version you have installed. If you know you have Java installed but are not sure
which version, just try one then the other. If you get an error like this when
launching, it means you do not have the referenced version of Java installed.
Double click on the .bat file for the model you wish to open. These .bat files will
launch the correct version of JaamSim and load the model.
If you have Java installed and you left the files in the same folder, the model will
open in JaamSim. Larger models may take a moment to load.
Select File | Open, then navigate to the model you wish to open. The models are
contained in the .cfg files.
If you are an experienced Windows user, you can associate the .cfg files with
JaamSim. That way, all you need to do is to double click on a .cfg file to open a
model,
WARNING: If you move the JaamSim.exe file often or use different versions,
your registry may become confused.
For Mac and Linux Users: Follow the instructions as above, except note that the
folder is Models – Any OS and the JaamSim file is a .jar file (not .exe). Note that we
have not tested the models on Mac or Linux operating systems.
3. Running Models
Each model has a .pdf and video with instructions on how to present it.
In general, the instructor may follow the View sequences in the model for a logical
presentation. Watch the video corresponding to the model, and review the PDF.
Practice explaining the models a few times, adjusting the run speed or pausing the
model to match your own cadence.
Once you are familiar with the models, you may also opt to skip some sections or
present them in a different order. People teaching Lean Six Sigma will have a vast
amount of experience they can add, so do not feel you need to stick to the
recommended sequence once you are familiar with the models.
Model Numbering: The models are numbered so that you are sure which video
and PDF go with each model. The numbering is the approximate order they were
created and has no special meaning. The one exception is after the dash. For
example, the models below are both the same model except the motif and animation
is different. They show identical concepts, but the instructor can select the one that
will best resonate with the students. The instructor would not normally show both
models to the same class.
3.1. Videos
Each model has a corresponding video. These videos have two purposes:
1 To show you, the instructor, one possible way of presenting the model.
2 In the event you could not review a model before the course (such as a last
minute change of instructor), you could simply play the video for some of the
These PDF are intended to be notes for the instructor for each model. They may give
suggestions and background information not in the video. It is a good idea to review
these in addition to watching the videos. They will give hints on when to pause the
model, when to clear the model run, etc.
4. Licensing
There are several types of items included in this package. Please read the licensing
section for each.
The simulation software used is JaamSim. JaamSim is not owned by The Big Lean
Simulation Library, LLC. It is supplied under the GNU General Public License v3. You
agree to the terms of the JaamSim license by using the JaamSim software. We have
included a .PDF of this license in the Instructor Folder.
GNU General Public License v3 requires that we make a copy of the corresponding
source code available to you if we distribute the object code. The source code is
located on your Instructor Files folder here:
