Study abroad in London

Students will have an opportunity to earn credits abroad
in London over spring break during a spring 2005 trip.
The trip will count as a class itself, and participating
students will meet in the spring of 2005 for lectures.
These lectures will cover the culture and customs of the
United Kingdom, and students wishing to receive credit
for the class must attend. The students will then leave
for London and spend the week of spring break in En-
gland.
According to the brochure, the trip to London will
count as an elective credit, but it is not limited to those
who are only interested in receiving credit for the course.
While tuition and fees still apply, the trip is open to
anyone who is enrolled at RSC and signs up in time.
While in England, students will also have the chance
to visit sights such as Big Ben, Stonehenge, Convent
Garden, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul’s Ca-
thedral, museums and more.
“We are doing as much as you can do in a week in
London,” said Dr. Shenethia Manuel, presidential ad-
visor on intercultural communication and education.
There will be a set agenda for the trip, but students
will have time for things that are not included on the
schedule. However, the cost of additional side trips
will not be included in the packet, and students must
pay for the side trips themselves.

Partying, drinking, dating, studying and
volunteering; while most of these things
might stand out in someone’s mind as typi-
cal for the college experience, volunteer-
ing might seem out of place.
That was not the case last year, however.
RSC students volunteered by the hundreds
putting together over 74,000 volunteer
hours. If those hours were calculated at
minimum wage, costs would have ex-
ceeded $200,000.
Service-Learning started in 2001 with a
total number of 90 volunteer students.
Through recruitment, advertisement and
word-of-mouth, the idea has caught on and
become very successful, growing 10 times
over.
One factor in the continuing growth of
the Service-Learning program is the vol-
unteer fair. The volunteer fair, which was
held on Sept. 8-9, brought 42 agencies to
the campus to actively recruit volunteers
for Service-Learning. The agencies were
set up outside classrooms across the cam-
pus.

specific locations to help gain volunteers

syllabus and an itinerary that we will follow,” said Manuel.
The price for students under the age of 25 is $1,575,
and the cost for students over the age of 25 is $1,780.
These prices include tuition, fees, two meals a day, hotel,
tips, T-shirts and airfare. The reason for the additional
cost to students over 25 has to do with hotel arrange-
ments. Students over 25 can only share a room with one
other person. Students under 25 will share a suite with up
to three other students. However, it is possible for one to
arrange for a double room or a private room. The only
other cost to the student would be if the student chose to
purchase insurance, souvenirs, lunch, a double room or
private room, an additional side trip or other amenities.

In order to keep the appeal high for vol-
unteer work, work-study hours and college
credit hours may be earned through some
of the volunteer programs. This is an
added benefit to what many find to be a
very rewarding investment of time.
The fair was held at the same time as
the student senate elections and may have
had some of the attention diverted away
from the campus buildings. Booths were
present, however, and many volunteers
were signed up to volunteer in a wide va-
riety of ways.
For students uncertain about a major,
due to questions regarding what work in a
certain field will be like, can get some an-
swers through volunteer work. The Ser-
vice-Learning program allows for students
to take what they learn in the class and
apply it to daily situations involving the
community.

Students are encouraged to consider purchasing
insurance, should they decide to participate in the
trip. The types of insurance available for the trip are
limited health insurance, lost luggage insurance and
cancellation insurance. Cancellation insurance is
strongly recommended, as it protects the investment
of a student that cannot go on the trip at the last
minute.
The trip is limited to 30 students, and those who
are interested are urged to sign up as soon as pos-
sible as the price is subject to change. For more

Students are also being encouraged
to take part in RSC’s celebration of
Cultural Diversity/Intercultural Month
by submitting cultural exhibits. Stu-
dents who participate may earn a Ser-
vice-Learning credit.
The exhibits students are asked to
design include cultural artifacts, mu-
sic, clothing, dance and historical re-
search findings. For more information
