MODEL IRM-5000P USER’S MANUAL

1.0 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

Vanguard Instruments Company’s model IRM-5000P mega-ohmmeter is a
microprocessor-based, high-voltage, insulation test meter. The IRM-5000P is rugged
and portable, making it ideal for use in electrical, utility substations and in many other
industrial applications.
The sophisticated, insulation tester uses a dual-microprocessor design. One processor
is dedicated to the control of the power supply and measuring circuitry. While, the
second microprocessor is dedicated to the display, printer control and user interfaces.
These microprocessors interface with each other via an optical link to ensure the
operator’s safety and isolation from the high-voltage inside the unit.

1.1 Test Voltage

The IRM-5000P can run tests with pre-set voltages consisting of: 500, 1000, 2500, and
5000 Vdc. The unit can also output test voltages specified by the user ranging from
50 Vdc to 5000 Vdc with a resolution of ±1 Vdc step.

1.2 High-Voltage Warning Display and Audible Alarm

A warning LED indicates when high-voltage is present at the test terminals. An audible
alarm will also alert the operator that a test is in progress.

1.3 Capacitor Discharge

The IRM-5000P automatically discharges any test charge left on the test material after
each test. The High-Voltage LED will warn the operator of the potential hazard that
exists during each discharging period.

1.4 Voltmeter
The IRM-5000P will always display on the LCD screen the voltage at the test terminals.
Thus, the user can use the IRM-5000P as a voltmeter. Measurable voltage input
ranges from 50 to 1250 Volts, ac or dc.

1.5 Keypad
An alphanumeric keypad allows users to enter test identification numbers and control
functions.

1.6 LCD Display

A back-lit, 4-line by 20-character, LCD screen outputs test data and user messages. To
conserve energy, the backlight of the LCD will power off after 45 seconds of inactivity.
Pressing any button on the keypad can restore the backlight. The adjustment to the
contrast of the LCD can be done from the keypad. Pressing the “↑” key for more than 3
seconds will darken the LCD screen. Pressing the “↓” key for more than 3 seconds will
lighten the LCD screen.

6
MODEL IRM-5000P USER’S MANUAL

1.7 Built-in Thermal Printer

A built-in, thermal printer will output test results on 2½-inch-wide, thermally sensitive
paper. Test results can be printed in both tabular and graphic formats. Moving the
paper inside in the printer can be done from the keypad. Pressing and immediately
releasing the “↑” key will advance the printer paper. While, pressing and immediately
releasing the “↓” key will retract the printer paper.

1.8 Test-Report Storage Capability

The IRM-5000P uses Flash Electrically Erasable PROMS (EEPROM) to store test
reports in the memory. Stored test results can be recalled later by the user to be
reanalyzed, print test reports or to transfer data to an IBM-compatible, personal
computer for record keeping. Up to 90 test reports can be stored in the EEPROMs.

1.9 Computer Interface

An RS-232C port can be used to interface with an IBM-compatible computer. A
Windows-based Insulation-Resistance Analysis program allows users to retrieve test
reports stored in the IRM-5000P. Thus, the user can generate test reports with an office
computer. A special feature of the software will also allow the user to overlay several
resistance curves on a color monitor. The user is then able to monitor the resistance
deterioration of a test material over time.
An RS-232C cable is also furnished with every unit. The IRM-5000P requires a 9-pin,
D-type, male-to-female connector. The RS-232C port connector pin assignment is
shown in Table 1.0 below:

Table 1.0 Serial Port Pin Assignments

1.10 Temperature Probe

A non-contacting, infrared, temperature probe is also provided with each IRM-5000P.
Recording the temperature of the device under test (DUT) permits the IRM-5000P to
convert the recorded resistance to the equivalent resistance reading at 20 °C and 40°C.
The feature provides the user the ability to compare the resistance reading of the DUT
regardless of the temperature at which the reading was taken.

1.11 Power Source

The IRM-5000P can operate from internally, sealed, rechargeable, lead-acid batteries or
it can be operated from an external power source. The lead-acid batteries provide up to
five hours of continuous operation. An isolated transformer allows the IRM-5000P to be
used while the batteries are charging. The factory or an authorized user can set the
desirable power sources to be: 110/220 Vac, 50/60 Hz or 220/440 Vac, 50/60 Hz
according to Table 2.0.

1.10 Test Terminals

The IRM-5000P has three test terminals: POS, NEG, and GUARD. For measurements
up to 100 Giga-ohms, the user can make measurements using the POS and NEG
terminals. For higher resistance readings, the user may want to use the GUARD
terminal to remove any surface-leakage current affecting the measurement. For an
additional explanation about the GUARD terminal, please refer to Appendix C.

4.0 TEST MODE SUMMARY

4.1 Insulation Resistance ( R ) Test
The Insulation Resistance test measures the insulation resistance at selected test
voltages to provide an instantaneous resistance reading.

4.2 Polarization Index (PI) Test

The Polarization Index test measures the ratio of insulation resistance after one minute
and then after ten minutes. The Polarity Index is derived from a ratio of the two periods,
where the resistance value at ten minutes is divided by the resistance value at one
minute. See Appendix A for more details.

4.3 Step Voltage (SV) Test

The Step Voltage test is based on an ideal insulator producing the same resistance
measurement at all voltages. As an example, an insulator that is over stressed will
measure lower resistance values at the higher voltages. Accordingly, the resistances
measured on an over-stressed insulator at increasingly higher voltages (steps) will
produce decreasingly lower resistance values. A typical Step Voltage test duration is
five minutes. The IRM-5000P will sequentially take resistance readings of the DUT at
one-fifth increments of the final test voltage at one minute intervals. Default test
voltages are selectable at 2,500 Vdc or 5,000 Vdc. The user can also select a specific
voltage and intervals.

4.4 Dielectric Discharge (DD) Test

The Dielectric Discharge test measures the dielectric absorption of the tested material.
The default test requires 30 minutes of applying full voltage followed by a one minute
discharging of the DUT. The DD value is then calculated from the formula:

Current after1 minute (mA)

DD RATIO =
Test Voltage × Capacitanc e

Refer to Appendix B for more details.

Polarization Index Ratio

The Polarization Index (PI) number is derived from the ratio of the resistance value at
ten minutes to the resistance value reading at one minute. Since the resistance
readings are taken very closely in time, the temperature is virtually the same at both
resistance measurement times. Accordingly, the PI value is virtually free of any
temperature variation. For a typical insulation, the resistance value increases as time
increases during a test.

Table 16.0 PI Ratio Table

INSULATION CONDITION PI RATIO

Unsatisfactory Less than 1.0

Questionable 1.0 to 2.0 (Note 1)

Good 2.0 to 4.0

Very Good Above 4.0 (Note 2)

Notes
1. A resistance load, a load with low capacitance, such as short runs, the PI reading will
be satisfactory with the reading.
2. A dry, brittle insulation may show a good PI reading, but may fail under shock
condition.
3. Table 16.0 above, gives a rough guide to the condition of the insulation under test.
The user needs to consider the equipment’s history and the user’s own experience with
the equipment.

Dielectric Discharge Ratio

When a dielectric is subjected to a voltage gradient, some charge will slowly permeate
into the dielectric. The effect is referred to as Dielectric Absorption. Since the dielectric
is by intent, an insulator, one can imagine that the movement of these small charges
has a very long time constant. While virtually all dielectrics exhibit the effect to some
extent, poorer dielectrics or dielectrics that have undergone degradation will absorb
more charge.
The Dielectric Discharge test incorporated in the IRM-5000P has a standard test voltage
of 500V and a standard test time of 30 minutes. During the testing time some charge
migrates into the dielectric material under test, as described above. At the completion
of the 30 minute test, the insulation system is discharged to zero potential. At the zero
point, the absorbed charge will start to migrate out of the insulator’s dielectric. After
discharging the dielectric for one minute, the Dielectric Discharge current flow is
measured. As can be seen in the equation below, the Dielectric Discharge Ratio is
proportional to the current measured:

Current after1 minute (mA)

DD RATIO =
Test Voltage × Capacitanc e

In general, higher ratios indicate a poorer insulation system.

As one would expect, a higher test voltage will produce a higher electric field across the
insulator’s dielectric material, and more charge can be expected to be absorbed by the
dielectric. Thus, doubling the test voltage can be expected to double both the absorbed
charge as well as the discharge current measured at the end of the test. To make the
Dielectric Discharge Ratio independent of the natural phenomenon, the formula for the
Dielectric Discharge Ratio is divided by the test voltage.
An insulation system that has longer lengths of insulated conductors can naturally be
expected to absorb more charge, due to the physically longer length of the conductors
and dielectric. Of course, such systems will also have a higher capacitance, as the
capacitance of a pair of conductors in a cable is proportional to the length of the cable.
Thus, a system with twice as much cable will absorb, in general, twice as much charge,
but will also have twice as much capacitance. Dividing the discharge current by the
measured capacitance in the DD Ratio formula above will normalize the effect.

Guard Terminal Application

When testing an insulation system, there may be times where the measured leakage
current is not necessarily a function of a poor insulation system, but rather of
contamination at the connection point, which allows leakage currents to flow along the
surface of the connection point. These readings can cause the test operator to
incorrectly assume that the insulation system under test has failed and must be
replaced.
To exclude these surface effects and get an accurate measurement of the insulation
system itself, it is often advisable to perform the Insulation Test with a guard terminal
attached as shown in the figure below.

Figure 23.0 Test Terminals of the IRM-5000P

Surface leakage currents, which may flow along the surface of the exposed wires, will
flow from the Positive HV Test lead to the Guard lead. These currents are not
measured by the IRM-5000P. The cable itself will also have some inherent leakage
current that will flow from the Positive HV lead, through the cable, and out the Negative
HV lead. The current that will be used for the Insulation Resistance measurements.
The guard terminal is at very nearly the same voltage potential as the Negative Test
lead. For the same reason, the guard connection should be positioned to avoid arcing
from the Positive Test lead. As shown in the illustration, by placing the guard near the
Negative Test lead, the risk of arching can be avoided.
