--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------
There were 3 rounds : Aptitude test, GD, interview. (Pls keep your college ID ca
rd with u, else they won?t let u sit for the test.)

APTITUDE TEST :
55 ques, 60 min time, followed by 15 mins for essay writing. R.S. Agarwal is mor
e than enough. But if u r confident & have practiced enough of apti from any sta
ndard book, that will certainly do (I did from TIME materials for placement). Bu
t direction test, data sufficiency, venn diagram etc were common from R.S. Agarw
al. AT LEAST GET FAMILIAR WITH THE TYPES OF QUES AS TIME MANAGEMENT IS THE KEY T
O SUCCESS IN THIS SECTION.
Section 1- Verbal part
She performed _ the opera house.(in/at/on etc)
Another qs on preposition-easy.
Synonym-apathetic
_ clown of that circus became famous for his antics.(article)
Article again-easy.
Then a RC on some plants, pollen grains etc. Do it at last if u get time.

Section 2 ?
Well guys I don?t remember the problems, but it was very easy. Just stay cool an
d keep pace with time.
Data sufficiency- about 5 qs
Venn diagram- easy, 5 qs. Problem was like- of 600 people,576 use credit cards (
VISA,AMEX etc).
Direction sense- 2 or 3 easy qs
Some more qs were there. Follow any standard book & u can definitely do them.

Section 3 ? Attention to details

Eg: CBCBCCBBC CBCBCCBBC CBCBCCBBC ?find who are alike or not.
4 or 5 qs like above.
Then 4 or 5 qs like- if * represents +,- rep. * etc, find value of 12* 5-7?.etc

Section 4 ? Technical
Qs from UNIX, DBMS etc.
Eg: which normal form is only and completely key dependent? Which command to use
for seeing detail of a command in UNIX (man, info, display, help).

Essay topic- MONEY BRINGS IRRESPONSIBILITY

Be fast but stay calm. Apti is the easiest round- trust me. 129 cleared it.

GROUP DISCUSSION :
13 candidates in a group, 15 mins time, followed by 30 sec for summing up the GD
for each candidate. Our topic was- ?HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY?. Everyone, even
who sat silent was specifically asked to speak. But it is better that u speak s
pontaneously. The round carries lot of marks.
94 cleared the round. (Usually GD isn?t elimination round but since too many had
cleared apti, they eliminated some in GD in order to shorten the i/w round.)

INTERVIEW :
I won?t go into detail of it. A panel of two was there, extremely polite, approa
chable and friendly.
In technical, they asked about-
C(call by value & ref. etc)
UNIX,OS (shell, kernel etc)
JAVA (exception handling, features of OOP)
DS (linked list)
NETWORKING (http, port etc)
& some more qs on diff subjects. I answered well & confidently, tried to keep a
smile on my face to make myself look confident and well-prepared.
Then there were some HR qs like about myself, my results, a prize which I won fo
r writing on cloning, why IBM, what?s the difference b/w IT & CSE and like that.
( JUST GO THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE & prepare standard qs like why IBM etc.)

IBM PAPER ON 11th APRIL

Hello friends,
My name is Ajitesh Pathak, a 3rd year student of NIT Durgapur studying in the br
anch of Information Technology. Like many before, I used to browse this website
for company papers and experiences of those who got placed and believe me it fe
els great while writing as one. On 11th April, IBM India had visited our campus
and 72 got selected out of 340 aspirants. Thank God, I was one of them.
Here are the details of the selection procedure.

There were 4 rounds

1 . Written
2 . Essay round
3 . GD
4 . Tech + HR Interview

340 sat for the interview and 166 got selected. The cut off for every department
was variable but for the ECE, CSE and IT ppl it was very high. There were 55 qu
es and 47 was the cut-off. Yes, believe me, tht s the fact. 47 was the cutoff and
for Non-IT depts. Like mechanical, EE, Meta, Chem.. the cut off ranged from 35 t
o 40. Let me brief you about the written test.
There were 4 sections
1st Verbal Section: 10 questions
2 ques on filling appropriate words..like
[1] The money was shared ______ the two.
(a) Among (b) Between (c) a & b (d) None
[2] _______ preparing for the exams, she had also prepared a presentation.
(a) Beside (b) Besides (c) a & b (d) None
1 ques on a synonym based sentence
[3] The phone number was incorporated into the directory.
(a) Exclude (b) Include (c) Condemned (d) None
Then the next 2 were on articles, very easy ones.

Then there was a RC on embedded systems. Basically, read the 1st para, answer the
1st ques the ques were set according to the paras very easy, try to do it in the
end. Do the ones you are comfortable with.

2nd Aptitude Section: 25 questions

Believe me this was a good section. There were easy ques but you had to be patie
nt and not excited. Try to keep your adrenaline flow under control .
Q on Venn Diagram
There are 32 tables in a room. 9 tables have salt bottles on them. 1 table has s
alt and pepper only, 1 table has salt and sugar only and 1 table has pepper and
sugar only.
3 tables have all of them. The difference between the tables containing pepper a
nd sugar is 2. Find the following..
[1] No. of tables containing sugar. [Ans: 17]
[2] No. of tables containing sugar only. [Ans: 12]
[3] No. of tables containing pepper. [Ans: 15]
[4] No. of tables containing pepper only [Ans: 10]
[5] No. of tables containing salt only. [Ans: 4]

Then there were few symbol based ques.. Like if + is /, / is -, - is * and * is

+ then evaluate.. there were 4 expressions..
There was a q on odd one out there were 4 expressions and 3 of them evaluated to
36, the answer was the one which didn t evaluate to 36.
These comprised of ques [6],[7],[8],[9], [10]
The next 5 were data sufficiency ones. Very easy CAT aspirants would sail through
this portion.. Very easy ones

The next five were general questions on aptitude like

[16] If 5 cakes takes 1 hr 30 mins to bake in an oven when kept together, then h
ow much will it take 10 cakes to bake in an oven when kept together. [ Ans: Same
time ]
[17] P and Q can write 135 pages in 27 hrs. P can write 3 pages in 1 hour. How m
uch time will it take Q to write 42 pages. [ Ans: 21]
[18] A beats B in a 100 race by 10m . B beats C in the same race by 10m. Then by
how much does A beat C in the same race. [Ans: 20m]
[19] A class took an exam and each scored either 80 or 100 marks. If 10 students
gave the exam and 100 was the max score one could get, then find out how many g
ot 100 marks if the average of the class was 94. [Ans : 7]
The last one I don t exactly remember but that was very easy. Anyone could do it.
The next, the final 5 of this section was a concentrative portion.
If $ represents 1 and * represents 0, then find the following in this code
There were 5 expressions. One had to find the value of each of the expression an
d then convert it to binary form and then encode it according to the 1st line. T
his was a little cautious portion, but keep your cool and don t make a mistake in
finding the binary.

One thing, normally IBM gives q s on cubes but there were none in our paper. So fu
ture aspirants should be knowing how to do the sums of cubes. Just think upon it
with a group of frnds and then it wil be fine. Also know the octal, hexadecima
l systems and how to find the equivalents of numbers with decimals, like 0.4375

3rd Attention to Detail Section: 10 ques

This was the easiest section. Some patterns were given and you had tell wich pat
terns were same according to the options. So be calm and keep your eyes open. Th
ere were some symbol based questions also. There were 5 questions which were bas
ed on a small passage.
It was a passage about a club with some membership criteria to be fulfilled. Don t
read it. Start with the questions and relate the options with a criteria becaus
e it was a section named Attention to Detail not Reading Comprehension. So work
with the options. This is where maximum students lost the time when they started
reading the criteria. Play with the options.

4th Technical Section: 10 ques

This was a tough section especially for the Non IT branches.
4 ques on C/C++, 3 on DBMS, 3 on Unix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------
It has 4 sections in its paper: (1 hr test)
(i) verbal (10 mins)
This will consist of filling up prepositions in the blanks.
e.g. 1. he had been singing for a very long time, but until now he has never bee
n seen ____ the opera house
options: (a)at (b)in (c)on (d)none
2. the sea food did not agree ____ him.
options: (a)with (b)on (c)for (d)in
There will be atleast 2 of these questions.
Then there would be few other fill in the blanks .
Then there is a comprehension. Our passage was from Origin of Species .
It was fairly easy, but don t read the passage first, read the questions first and
then find the answers from the passage.
They are mostly in sequential order from passage paragraphs.
This part is easy, u will get through if u have basic knowlege and skills of eng
lish.
(ii) Quantitative (25 questions, 30 mins)
This part is fairly easy.
First question was on venn diagrams (credit card holder problem). Its a bit leng
thy but if u can manage it u get 4-5 questions right straight away.
then there are questions on direction, 4-5 questions on data sufficiency, 4-5 qu
es on replacing 0 and 1 by * & #, age problems etc
They r quite easy just remember the clock is ticking.
(iii) Attention to details (10 mins)
This section be careful this section is very easy but be attentive to details, I w
ould suggest do this right after the verbal.
There will be 2-3 questions on similarity like
234222272451 23422272451 234222272451
find any dissimilarity. Ch eta naS
then there will problem on relation- father, son like that
then replacing + by *, - by + and so on
last question will be on case study.
they had given us a criteria list for admission and few biodatas for considering
whether their applications will be accepted.
(iv) Technical (10 mins)
this portion will contain checking output, choosing correct answer etc.
It will be based on DBMS, C, unics commands and may few other topics
Essay writing:
They will provide 15 mins after aptitude test for writing this passage. About 30
0 words. Now don t think thats enough time, u hardly get any, trust me. Start writ
ing the moment u get the signal, but don t beat around the bush, be clear in expre
ssing ur ideas and their justifications. Ur aptitude marks most probably don t inc
lude essay marks. But they do pay importance to this.
128 were selected from 200-220 after aptitude test.
Next is the GD round, now we were never prepared for GD as we thought there won t
be any GD, but surprisingly we had and 94 were selected out of 128. There were 1
2 in a group, and all the girls would be selected here, so boys u all have to op
en the zip of ur mouths and talk. Don t sit Dumb. U lose points for that. Don t wait
for too long for others to finish. They check ur communication skills and ur id
eas. Just remember u have to talk.
If u get through this u will face Tech+hr interview and mostly they will be cond
ucted by the People who conducted ur GD. Now, this is totally a matter of luck,
in which panel u get If they ask u technical questions they are generally Not pla
in easy, so u have to be well prepared in technical, which I was not. As I had a
lready got a job offer from Cognizant, I wasn t looking forward to any job in IBM.
So I hadn t taken any preparation at all. But U guys don t do this, my interview wa
s mainly on HR so it was easy, though they tried to crack me with stress questio
ns, but they couldn t.There were 2 men in my panel,
It was as follows:
me: good afternoon, sir.
sir: good afternoon take ur seat.
me: thank u, sir.
sir: i didn t get time to read ur essay, tell me about it in brief.
me: explained (they were satisfied)
sir: tell us something about urself
me: told (stress on ur extracurricular activities if u have good ones, now I was
in news reading and also some simple research work)
sir: u said u did researchwork, would like to do research in IBM?
me: right now I would like to join, learn and grow with the industry and in futu
re I might think about switching to that. BLAH BLAH
sir: have u got any other job offer?
me: yes sir, from cognizant.
sir: why do u want to join IBM, cognizant is the fatest growing company now?
me: explained(<
Trust me always go through the press releases or news of the company u r sitting
for, because if u talk about those they really get impressed, Just visit The Co
mpany s Home Site, U can get all details there>>)
sir: Ok, what is ur favourite subject?
me: Principles of programming language
sir: tell me diff b/w structure in C and C++?
me: told http://www.TowardsJob.com
sir: tell me a func where u don t have to define a body?
me: pure virtual func
sir: explain that.
me: (that was the only thing I couldn t recall)
sir: anyway, tell me about header files
me: BLAH BLAH
< >
sir: Ok, lets say I give u a job Not challenging, a job that class 12 boy can do
, would u do it?
me: well a job is only as challenging as u make it, and i think there s no harm in
starting with a class 12 job, I can surely work my way up.
sir: tell me a phase of ur life where u went through a big change.
me: from my school to college..BLAH BLAH
sir: are u mobile?
me: absolutely
sir: ok, lets say I send u to jungle rural place and tell u set up an IT worksho
p, what will the 3 most important challenges u will be facing?
me:<>
(i) requirement analysis: planning, gathering info on what is necessary to get
the job done, framework etc
(ii) man power= local technically ignorant people + technically experienced peo
ple > Managing them Together
(iii) handling unexpected events that r bound to occur in any large scale job
They were totally impressed with this answer.
sir: u have any question for me?
me: sir can u tell me about the training program in ur company?
sir: BLAH BLAH, any more questions?
me: yes sir, can u tell me more about 10 yr pact made b/w IBM and Idea cellular
and Aditya birla?
sir: BLAH BLAH, anymore?
me: no sir.
sir: thank u
me: thank u

4th Technical Section: 10 ques
This was a tough section especially for the Non IT branches.
4 ques on C/C++, 3 on DBMS, 3 on Unix.
Just brush up your C concepts and do some intelligent guess work. But the crux l
ies that you are expected to have all the 1st 3 sections right if want to guaran
tee a place.
When I went to the Interview Room, the interviewer told me that I only made 3 mi
stakes in the Technical Section, the rest all were right.. ie, my score was 52 o
ut of 55.. So try to have a very high score in written.
Before the Interview there was the Essay round of 15 mins and GD.
Essay was a general topic.. Primary Education is more important than Higher Stud
ies..
There was a GD round and the GD round carried a lot of marks. There were no elim
inations after the GD round but it carried a lot of marks in the final score.
When I entered the interview room, it appeared that I was already selected befor
e it. I had a 5 mins interview session. All was HR, they were asking as if it wa
s a formality. They told me about my written test which I mentioned earlier and
also my GD and essay, which was very gud as they said. They didn t see my file nei
ther my CV. They asked me general ques about family background, place of birth,
and about extra-currics. Try to mention things which will shift the interview to
wards your way. Like they asked me whether I had written any complex programs in
C or C++. I said that yes I had written few like the 15 puzzle program, Tic-Tac
-Toe, Spiral and I purposely mentioned that I didn t use any A.I. or some high con
cept but applied my basic knowledge about C like arrays, pointers.. From here he
asked me what is an array and a vector, Diff between Call by value and Call by
reference, diff. between return() and exit() .. that t it..
Then they commented on my high C.G.P.A. and asked me my standing in the departme
nt. Time was smoothly moving and all my answers were spontaneous. Finally they a
sked me why a manhole is round. I answered it almost. They shook my hand with an
assured face tht I was selected and said: It was very nice meeting you, Ajitesh
. The interview was over even before I could realize.
The results were out after 2 hours and 72 were selected My name was announced and
everything went happily thereafter.
Other panels also asked many on IBM info..
CEO and Chairman ::: Samuel J. Palmisano
Headquarters ::: Newyork (Main), Bangalore(India)
IBM India President::: Shankar Annaswamy
IBM India VC ::: Rajesh Nambiar and Amitava Ray..
Visit the IBM site for further details.. and one for those who have spectacles..
I have one but I wasn t asked this one. Other panels had asked what kind of lens d
oes the specs have and draw the ray diagram showing the defect and the effect af
ter the lens. So be confident and try to score high in written, essay and GD.. i
nterview will shorten automatically.. Ppl with higher C.G.P.A. have great chance
in IBM..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------
10 question in technical section (4 unix, 2 dbms, 1 data structure, 3 C) very ea
sy
rest question include venn diagram, binary number, coding decoding, data suffici
ency etc. and of course here is one essay on UNITY IS STRENGTH.
http://www.TowardsJob.com
This is the first round for IBM gbs for (ISL) there is one more paper consist of
technical questions after that 138 student shortlisted for GD ROUND here the tr
ick is to speak with confident and dont hurry while speaking. after gd 96 studen
ts are called for interview
In interview they through questions like
1 tell me abut urself?
2 why ibm?
3 why u wanna join ibm as electronics engg?
4 what are dynamic and static memory locatoin?
5 abut binary tree, traversal, call by bvalue, some dbms commands etc.
Finaly I went for the hr int. he ask my strength and weakness. plz go through IB
M site and learn its three values he ask me iad i told him all he got totally im
pressed .

Selection Criteria: Minimum of 70% in B.Tech

Selection Procedure:
1. Written Test
2. Technical Interview
3. HR Interview
Each section is knock out one s .
Written Test:
No. Of Questions: 55
Time Limit: 1 hour
The test is basically very simple. It consists of 4 sections
1. Verbal Ability
2. Mathematical Ability
3. Miscellaneous Questions
4. Computer Fundamentals
Verbal Ability:
Simplest than any one could imagine. It consists of three types of questions
1. Articles
2. Preposition
3. Comprehension
It consists of 10 Questions to be completed in 10 minutes.
They gave simple sentences and asked to fill appropriate articles and prepositio
ns.
The comprehension is about Data and Information and relation between them. What
is needed to crack this section is simple practice of reading.
Mathematical Ability:
It consists of 25 questions and time to be taken is 30 minutes. Questions are li
ke + is replaced by * , * is replaced by -, - is replaced by /, / is replaced by
+ then what is the value of the expression 24/2+7*3-5*4 ( The Expression is not
exact I have given it just as an example there are nearly 5 questions like this
)
If $ = 1 and * = 0, A number system consisting of just these two digits and all
the higher numbers are represented using only these two digits $ and *. The valu
e of $ will be doubled on going right side in the number. Then given questions l
ike
$**$ : $**( $** X $**$ - $*$ ) = ?
What is the GCD of $$**$ and $$$**$ and questions based on simple addition and m
ultiplication of these numbers. 5 questions of this type are given.
Hint: If you have idea on fundamentals you can easily find they are nothing but
binary numbers.
Direction problems to find out distance etc., They are 5 in number.
Questions test basic level of understanding and grip on fundamentals. Cracking t
his Section is easy if you brush up your basics on mathematics.
Miscellaneous Questions:
This is fun section and very simple. Questions are 10 in numbers are time to tak
e is 10 minutes. Questions consist of Data Recognition of very simple kind. They
will give out 4 numbers like
1. 34323333 2. 34323333 3. 34323333 4. 34332333
Then options are given to choose between A, B, C, D. A if 1 and 2 are alike, B i
f 123 are alike and in the similar manner.
They also gave 4 English words whose spellings are similar as the above numbers
and options are similar to the above questions. 5 of this kind of questions are
given.
Second kind of questions in this section are about data sufficiency and hypothes
is and assumptions type of questions. Number of questions of this kind of questi
ons are 5.
Expression: L > M
Statement 1: L2 = 81
Statement 2: M3=1331
Can we judge the above expression based on the given statements.
Questions are similar and 5 in number.
Cracking this section is simply being cool and keeping calm. Just think and you
will crack this very easily. You don t need big big calculations.
Computer Fundamentals
This section consists of 10 questions to be completed in 10 minutes. Questions a
re based on C, Unix, file permissions, etc., this section is easy computer stude
nts but quite hard for other branch students. It just consists of 1 or 2 C quest
ions. All the remaining are also including General Knowledge regarding computer
also. One question is what is the World s Fastest Super Computer.
http://www.ChetanaSinterview.com
Almost 50% percentage of students are able to cross this section. I m one of the
m. Total 322 students are able to crack this section. Out of all those 120 stude
nts are interviewed on the same day when the test is conducted. The interview fo
r remaining students is on the next day. I m on the first day list.
I need not wait so much time for my interviews. Interviews started at 3:45 PM af
ter pre-placement talk of IBM people. The demo is very nice.
Technical Interview:
Just for the name sake it s a technical interview, but all the things happened i
s just a sort of HR interview. The questions he asked and the way he treated me
just shows that. Keep in mind that, most of the questions are just a result of m
y previous answer. The questions are:
Tell me about yourself.
A normal beginning questions in almost all the interviews, as I already know tha
t this would be the first question, atleast it s the most probable first questio
n, I prepared well for this. I started self dabba, of course I didn t say any li
es, still I feel embraced to say that but didn t let it out. Answer goes like, I
m a good communicator, I participated in paper presentations, debates, quizzes
and seminars, .... I won so and so prizes, I initiated this this this.. etc., et
c.,
What do you know about IBM?
Why do you want to join IBM?
If you say so ( I have just praised a lot), Any one can prepare such information
in just 2 days. You have also done the same and you are saying as if you always
wanted to join in IBM since you born. Haven t you?
I said No sort of answer of course not this short.
IBM needs people those who are genuine, sincere, and frank, not liars like you t
ell me frank If you lied, I will not consider it, as you finally told the truth
and I will select you.
What do you have to say for that? I didn t change my stand even then.
You are a mechanical engineer and you want to come to IT then why you have taken
mechanical, you should have taken CSE or CSIT?
I said that my parents insisted me to join in this branch as we had some relativ
es have been earned a lot after taking MECHANICAL.
So you can t make other people agree with your point of view, are you so weak? Y
ou said that you are a good communicator?
I said we have given a minimum respect to those who are spending lots of money o
n us and to those who gave birth. (Infact I couldn t get any word to put in plac
e of respect and he handed me the word.)
So you are not doing B.Tech Mechanical whole heartedly. Are you?
No sir. I don t think I could have managed to get a percentage of 77 if I didn t
do this whole heartedly. Even I have been doing some mechanical related project
s and paper presentations also. I don t agree with you if you say so. (After say
ing this I was afraid if he may get anger as I said in some rash manner. But he
just ignored with just a disgusted look and proceeded.)
What are the projects you have been doing?
I explained about my solar desalinator and distillator and solar tracker I was d
oing at the time of selections, of course I stopped doing later.
What is the relevance of your project and mechanical engineering?
I explained the relevance.
If you say that you are equally interested in your mechanical field also, why do
you want to come to IT sector?
I m more interested towards IT and said there are more chances and challenges to
learn.
What are your career aspirations?
My long term objective is to become an enterprenuer. ( Actually I was said not t
o reveal this but I thought I didn t thought It is not so important to hide that
we want to be an enterprenuer. )
Not the long term objective, what do you want to achieve in short term i.e., rig
ht now.
I want to get a job. What I feel is those who want to be an enterprenuer should
be an employee first.
Then you do one thing, I know lots of people in BHEL, and MRF tyres, I ll help y
ou to get a job over there. You go to your branch side.
No, I m interested towards IT only. ( Discussion again came to this point I feel
. Let s see where it takes me to. )
Not only interest, It s good for you. I know the field and even I worked for 15
years in the field of mechanical.
Which company you have worked in sir? (Generally this is unorthodox, to ask a qu
estion before allowed. But then I have asked already and I can t do anything exc
ept to wait. I feel that It showed my openness. What do you feel? )
MRF tyres, so, I m telling you with the experience, don t leave your field.
No sir, I ll not go that side. ( I wanted to ask him why he left MRF tyres and e
ntered into IT field. But controlled the urge and waited for the next question f
or him to ask. He waited a bit before asking me a question, may be he expected s
ome what longer answer than this. )
You are not clear, think clearly after this interview, why you lost, any way let
s get into other details. Say you are in a group working on a project and you a
re the best performer and the remaining people are not performing well. What do
you do in that scenario?
Data inadequate sir, are they interested in the project or not? Am I the leader
or just a parallel to them? Answer varies accordingly. ( Still Unorthodox. )
I don t know all the details and you are not the leader. Just tell me what you a
re going to do.
First thing I should not do is criticizing them as this simply worsen the relati
ons and situation. I ll just find out what are the areas they are lagging behind
and find out what their interests are and where they are strong and I ll try to
orient the project sections towards their strengths and interests. ( I think I
should have added with the help of boss at the end of my answer that would have
shown my concern to Team leader. )
You are the poor performer in the group and all the remaining are excellent perf
ormers. What will you do then?
If I m a poor performer, I will be lagging in certain things and I ll spot those
and find out reasons for those and find out reasons for those lags and I ll imp
rove in those areas. ( I should have also said that I will also take suggestions
of the colleagues. )
Again, you are not a bad performer means you are good performer, not excellent.
Even then other team members are just criticizing you. What do you do?
If they are criticizing means I ll definitely have things to develop at least in
their view. I ll ask them what are my lags and ask them to suggest for the same
and I again try to develop. ( I simply followed this simple principle, to show
him that I want to develop my self at any cost.)
You are given a work of 10 days and you, being fast completed the work in just 6
days, what will you do in the remaining time?
Days are left means, I was left with a lot of time to make my module better and
try to learn something.
If you look on the roads, the traffic is very, what do you propose to solve the
problem?
Providing alternative routes i.e., building more flyovers.
Flyovers and others are very time taking ones to construct, tell me instant solu
tions.
........( I ran out of ideas. )
If you look at the manhole covers, why do you find them only circular in shape.
Why not any rectangular or square?
..........( This time I know the answer. I wanted to play a still unorthodox mov
e time and waited till he asks me the next question. I showed myself as I m thin
king. )
You read thermal engineering?, Can I ask you a question?
Yes sir. ( Still looked as if I m thinking for the question. )
Diesel engines and such things?
Sure sir. ( Still seemed thinking. )
In what condition of running of an engine, I mean Overload, low load, idling or
rated load, the engine consumes more power?
Over load ( Answered instantly.)
No, it s wrong
No, sir, It s correct.
........................( may be he is thinking about what question to ask )
(This is the right time for me to conclude my unorthodox move)
Sir, can I answer the previous question,...
May be, if we make the shape as rectangular or square, the diagonal will be long
er than the side. So we get a chance to push the cover inside the hole, but for
circular shape, diameter is the only dimension. So it can t be pushed into hole
in any angle.
What will you do if you are not selected?
If you don t select me, I may not get another chance to get recruited in your co
mpany so I ll get selected for another company and I ll again come for your comp
any after 2 to 3 years with added momentum.
Thank you. You need not go back and all the best for next round.
All the time in the interview, I m very confident. He tried to put me under stre
ss by saying that I m not fit for their company and asking me to go for other fi
elds. Even his body language is as if he is having head ache by my words. He use
d to tap his forehand to show sign of distress, He used to look into vacuum, His
lips curled to show a sign non acceptance, of course all that is simple acting,
that is to just test us how we perform under stress. I m well prepared for any
sort of interview. I manged to get through this level. All through this intervie
w, I got a doubt whether I m in technical interview round or HR interview round
as all he tested is my personality and stress coping characteristics. May be my
mechanical branch didn t need to be tested technically in an interview for an IT
job. The next one is HR interview round. I waited for almost 20 minutes.
HR Interview:
Hello, I m Annapoorna , Good evening.
Good Evening xxx
Well Mr. Sanjay, tell me about yourself.
(Same old question, should I write it again? I started the same song)
Have you ever worked in teams? Like projects etc.
Yes madam, lots, I played team games like softball, etc., etc., I did that proje
ct and this project. I presented that paper and this paper with my friends. (The
answer is lengthy and no need to be typed.)
What is molecular manufacturing? (That is the topic of my paper.)
I explained using the water bottle on the table, how it differs from the convent
ional manufacturing
Good. Do you watch movies?
Yes, I watch movies, but from one or two months I m not seeing any movies and I
purely concentrated on improving my communication skills and personality develop
ment to get selected in a company, I read books. ( I was told before the intervi
ew by those who are already interviewed by that madam, that she is asking movie
reviews, so Purposefully I diverted the topic.)
So you read books. What books you read?
I mainly concentrated on personality oriented books only. I read How to win frie
nds and Influence People, You Can Win, How to speak Quickly and Effectively etc.
, The book I like most is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carneg
ie. (Again, the only book I remembered is that one, so I bring the topic on to t
hat book only.)
What are the techniques you learned from that book?
Never Criticizing People, Being a Good listener, Appreciating People when needed
, ...... ( I told lot more techniques. )
People say that Listening is a Passive mode of learning, why do you say that it
should be learned.
( I explained the importance of listening.)
If you are selected in our company, do you have any problem to relocate from you
r original place?
No, I can work any where.
Do you have any problem to go for other countries?
Certainly not, madam, Infact I don t have any problems of cold or any other thin
gs, I m adaptable to new place. To say it in other words, I love doing that.
Well, that s all, do you have any questions to ask?
You are recruiting people from mechanical engineering branch. Do they have any s
pecific work to do, because you can get well learned people of some Programming
languages, which you need from computer branches?
No, Sanjay, we actually need more in numbers, which we are not getting from just
those branches. that s the reason we are recruiting from mechanical branch also
.
What sort of work we are assigned to do when we join?
You will have to undergo a training program of 6 weeks. Then you will be allotte
d to work.
No madam, I m asking about the nature of work, after the training.
You will be doing coding at the beginning, so you are going be code writers, tha
t is you will be converting the code given to you as a program..
That s all madam, I don t have any more questions.
So, Thank You Mr. Sanjay, you may leave, All the best.
Thank you madam.
My interview is completed so early at nearly 4:30 PM, but we had to wait till 8
'0 clock as other person s interviews were completed. Finally I was selected.

Written Test
The written test consists of two sections each of 45 minutes duration
Section#1
This is the aptitude section consisting of 45 questions to be attempted in 45 mi
nutes. As is in all the exams, this section is based on the MBA pattern of exami
nation.
Section#2
This is the technical section. There is a separate paper for hardware and softwa
re. Candidates have to mention beforehand whether they want to write the softwar
e or the hardware paper. This section also carries 45 questions to be completed i
n 45 minutes.
Interview
There are two rounds of interviews, viz., the technical and and the HR round
Technical and Personal Round for Software Candidates
Mainly subjective questions in C, Operating Systems, DBMS, Data Structures are a
sked interspersed with some on the candidate's personal background.
.Typical questions in C and Data Structures
1. WAP to interchange 2 variables without using the third one
2. Explain quick sort and merge sort algorithms amn derive the time-constraint
relation for these.
3. Explain binary searching, fibonacci search
4. General questions on binary trees, transversals
5. General questions on graphs and their representation.
Typical Questions on Operating Systems
1. Demand paging, page faults, replacement algos, thrashing, etc
2. Paged segmentation and segment paging
In this section, case studies are presented are presented before the candidate t
o percieve his reaction and his/her communication skills are tested. IBM expects
teamwork and teamspirit from the candidates and their answers should reflect th
is attitude
Typical question is
You are a project manager of a big multinational project. There is a person X, a

IBM PAPER ON 2nd JUNE

Hai friends I am Niranjan

I have been selected for IBM IN CAMPUS PLACEMENT conducted at BITS, Warangal ,A.
P ON 2nd JUNE 2007. A total of 1406 students appeared 4 written test and around
220 were selected in written.

We were asked to write the ESSAY along with written test .Written test was start
ed around 10.30 AM and ended around 12 noon which comprised of ESSAY also. Resul
ts were anounced around 3.00 PM.

GDs for 220 students started around 3.30 PM and ended at 5 PM I think so. Result
s were anounced at 6 PM and 164 were selected in GD.

They held INTERVIEWS on next day .There were no results after tech interview man
y of the students were directly forwarded to HR and some of them were rejected a
nd they told them this directly. All the interviews were completed at 4PM . They
announced the final results and 79 students were selected atlast.

WITH GODâ S GRACE I WAS ONE OF THEM. Let me explain u each phase in detail

1.WRITTEN TEST
A. VERBAL ABILITY(10marks):
1,.2) ques on prepositions
3) nearest meaning of apathetic
a) â ¦.. b) sympathetic c)indifferent d)inattentive

This was the easiest RC I have ever seen in any companyâ s written test.

B.APTITUDE(25 marks):
It consisted of 25 questions believe there was not even a single question from o
bjective arthmetic(ie, trains, boats&streams ,time &distance etc .Please donâ t waste
ur time in preparing 4 arthmetic)

Almost all the ques r 4m VERBAL REASONING only (RS AGGARWAL is more than enough)
1-5) out of 600 students 536 have credit cards (AMEX,MASTER ,VISA CARDS)⠦⠦⠦.(a bit ha
this section with inter 1st year maths(A.P))
Draw the venn diagram with 3 circls intersecting
1)How many had MASTER card
2) How many had only MASTER card
3)How many had VISA card
4) How many had only VISA card
5) How many had AMEX card

I think difference betn 1 & 2 answers is 41 and 3 &4 is 21( have a wise guess it
s easy then)
Three ques on DIRECTION SENSE (easy)6 . A person starts behind is house which fa
ces to east and walks 50m an turns left walks 100m ⠦⠦⠦ in wht direction he is from hi
.

7. If NORTH is SOUTH-WEST then SOUTH-EAST is (ans is NORTH)

8. I dint remember5 ques on DATA SUFFIENCY(think well then it is easy)

5 QUES on if $ is 1 and * is 0 (just binary representations) then

444 is represented as
125 is represented as
So on Remaining questions were on BLOOD RELATIONS ,PROBLEMS ON AGES etc

C. ATTENTION TO DETAIL(10 marks):

3 Questions were asked on below pattern

1. Find any dissimilarity. a)234222272451 b) 23422272451 c)234222272451 d)

study A person is eligible for a job if passed his degree in Science with aggreg
ate over 60% and willing to pay a bond of RS 2 lakhs for 2 years ⠦⠦⠦..

If the person fails to satisfy any of mentioned criteria then he has to report M
anager or Administrative officer ⠦⠦⠦⠦⠦⠦⠦

D . TECHNICAL(10 marks)
3 questions are from C (easy) 3 questions from DBMS (very tough) 3 questions are
from unix(easy 4 comp students) I didnâ t remember the missing question sorry(I thin
k its 4m OS)

Thatâ s it 4 written test RS AGGARWAL(VERBAL REASONING) and any elementary English Bo

ok 4 grammar all the above 2 days before exam is more than enough to crack IBM W
RITTEN That is what I had and what I did.

2.ESSAY
Topic was "EXERCISE IS GOOD FOR HEALTH" We were given 15 mins just after written
and asked to write in not more than 200 words

3.GD
After we entered the room all the rules were changed it was not a GD but just li
ke JAM. We were 11 in group and each of us was given 3mins to speak on the topic
along with our introduction. Panel members were free with us they havent stoppe
d any of us though we ran out of time .

They want u speak .Thats it. Our topic was "ENGINEERS SHUDNT ACCEPT JOBS FROM OT
HER COUNTRIES" 9 out of 11 were selected in GD from my group.

4.TECH INTERVIEW
U cant distinguish tech and HR in IBM both go on same lines Sir : tell me abt ur
self me : ⠦⠦⠦⠦..

He asked me 3 case studies .I have answered it confidently. Hobbies and Goals ?

Interested subjects? OS and C what is Virtual Memory can u change the size of VM
on comp if so how? I have explained him wht is VM and how we can change it in X
P . Here is where I hit my first arrow into his heart.

2 quest on DBMS just queries but I was clean bold by those 2 quest but I pretend
ed as if I know it and trying hard to get it . Even interviewer helped me a lot
but I cudnt. But I made my mark already. I infered two things in case studies TEA
M WORK and NEVER GIVE UP which I implemented in later part of my interview. To g
et through tech one shud possess

1. COMMUNICATION SKILLS with min TECH Skills 2. very high TECH stuff 3.mesmarism
I used 3 and 1

5 HR
They ask u gen quest abt ur self and what do u know abt ibm? Don t say what u he
ard from ur friends say wht u know truly , I was caught on similar basis later o
n I recovered and replied in my own way what I know abt ibm from roots .At the e
nd of i/w I was asked a tech quest what is diff betn class and object? I have an
swered it in very general way he was amazed at the ans to that quet .Iâ ll make one t
hing clear to u ,Please put the interviewer in conversation and let him know tha
t ur good at communication ,creat a context to speak .many of u thinking how can
we? Every interviewer will be asking u Anyquestions to me ? there u r. prepare
a bunch of questions for him before u go to interview.Be sharp ,walk dynamic hav
e a smile on face, take as much liberty as u can donâ t get tensed, talk confident ,TI
MING is very very important ,be spontaneous ,put ur true character in front of i

Have you ever seen a football game?

Or been a part of a football team?
These questions might seem awkward and absurd when talking about How to crack a
Group Discussion to get into a top B-School.
But they are relevant to understand the nuances of a Group Discussion.
Just reiterating the cliché that a Group discussion, or Group Discussion, as it is
commonly called, is a group process or a team building exercise does not help s
tudents.
As in a football game, where you play like a team, passing the ball to each team
member and aim for a common goal, Group Discussion is also based on team work,
incorporating views of different team members to reach a common goal.
A Group Discussion at a B-School can be defined as a formal discussion involving
ten to 12 participants in a group.
They are given a topic. After some time, during which they collect their thought
s, the group is asked to discuss the topic for 20 to 25 minutes.
B-Schools use the Group Discussion process to assess a candidate's personality t
raits.
Here are some of the most important personality traits that a candidate should p
ossess to do well at a Group Discussion:
1. Team Player
B-Schools lay great emphasis on this parameter because it is essential for manag
ers to be team players.
The reason: Managers always work in teams.
At the beginning of his career, a manager works as a team member. And, later, as
a team leader.
Management aspirants who lack team skills cannot be good managers.
2. Reasoning Ability
Reasoning ability plays an important role while expressing your opinions or idea
s at a Group Discussion.
For example, an opinion like 'Reduction in IIMs' fees will affect quality' can b
e better stated by demonstrating your reasoning ability and completing the missi
ng links between fees and quality as:
'Reduction in IIMs' fees will result in less funds being invested on study mater
ial, student exchange programmes, research, student development activities, etc.
'Moreover, it costs money to attract good faculty, create good infrastructure an
d upgrade technology.
'With reduction in fees, less money will be available to perform these ,activiti
es which will lead to deterioration in the quality of IIMs.'
3. Leadership
There are three types of situations that can arise in a Group Discussion:
~ A Group Discussion where participants are unable to establish a proper rapport
and do not speak much.
~ A Group Discussion where participants get emotionally charged and the Group Di
scussion gets chaotic.
~ A Group Discussion where participants discuss the topic assertively by touchin
g on all its nuances and try to reach the objective.
Here, a leader would be someone who facilitates the third situation at a Group D
iscussion.
A leader would have the following qualities:
~S/he shows direction to the group whenever group moves away from the topic.
~S/he coordinates the effort of the different team members in the Group Discussi
on.
~S/he contributes to the Group Discussion at regular intervals with valuable ins
ights.
~S/he also inspires and motivates team members to express their views.
Caution: Being a mere coordinator in a Group Discussion does not help, because i
t is a secondary role.
Contribute to the Group Discussion with your ideas and opinions, but also try an
d steer the conversation towards a goal.
4. Flexibility
You must be open to other ideas as well as to the evaluation of your ideas: That
is what flexibility is all about.
But first, remember: Never ever start your Group Discussion with a stand or a co
nclusion.
Say the topic of a Group Discussion is, 'Should India go to war with Pakistan?'
Some participants tend to get emotionally attached to the topic and take a stand
either in favour or against the topic, ie 'Yes, India should', or, 'No, India s
hould not'.
By taking a stand, you have already given your decision without discussing the t
opic at hand or listening to the views of your team members.
Also, if you encounter an opposition with a very strong point at the 11th hour,
you end up in a typical catch-22 situation:
~If you change your stand, you are seen as a fickle-minded or a whimsical person
.
~If you do not change your stand, you are seen as an inflexible, stubborn and ob
stinate person.
5. Assertiveness
You must put forth your point to the group in a very emphatic, positive and conf
ident manner.
Participants often confuse assertiveness with aggressiveness.
Aggressiveness is all about forcing your point on the other person, and can be a
threat to the group. An aggressive person can also demonstrate negative body la
nguage, whereas an assertive person displays positive body language.
6. Initiative
A general trend amongst students is to start a Group Discussion and get the init
ial kitty of points earmarked for the initiator.
But that is a high risk-high return strategy.
Initiate a Group Discussion only if you are well versed with the topic. If you s
tart and fail to contribute at regular intervals, it gives the impression that y
ou started the Group Discussion just for the sake of the initial points.
Also, if you fumble, stammer or misquote facts, it may work against you.
Remember: You never ever get a second chance to create a first impression.
7. Creativity/ Out of the box thinking
An idea or a perspective which opens new horizons for discussion on the Group Di
scussion topic is always highly appreciated.
When you put across a new idea convincingly, such that it is discussed at length
by the group, it can only be positive.
You will find yourself in the good books of the examiner.
8. Inspiring ability
A good group discussion should incorporate views of all the team members.
If some team members want to express their ideas but are not getting the opportu
nity to do so, giving them an opportunity to express their ideas or opinions wil
l be seen as a positive trait.
Caution: If a participant is not willing to speak, you need not necessarily go o
ut of the way to ask him to express his views. This may insult him and hamper th
e flow of the Group Discussion.
9. Listening
Always try and strike a proper balance between expressing your ideas and imbibin
g ideas.
10. Awareness
You must be well versed with both the micro and macro environment.
Your awareness about your environment helps a lot in your Group Discussion conte
nt, which carries maximum weightage.
Caution: The content or awareness generally constitutes 40 to 50 percent marks o
f your Group Discussion.
Apart from these qualities, communication skills, confidence and the ability to
think on one's feet are also very important.
A group discussion can be categorically divided into three different phases:
i. Initiation/ Introduction
ii. Body of the group discussion
iii. Summarisation/ Conclusion
Let's stress on the initiation and summarisation:
Initiation Techniques
Initiating a Group Discussion is a high profit-high loss strategy.
When you initiate a Group Discussion, you not only grab the opportunity to speak
, you also grab the attention of the examiner and your fellow candidates.
If you can make a favourable first impression with your content and communicatio
n skills after you initiate a Group Discussion, it will help you sail through th
e discussion.
But if you initiate a Group Discussion and stammer/ stutter/ quote wrong facts a
nd figures, the damage might be irreparable.
If you initiate a Group Discussion impeccably but don't speak much after that, i
t gives the impression that you started the Group Discussion for the sake of sta
rting it or getting those initial kitty of points earmarked for an initiator!
When you start a Group Discussion, you are responsible for putting it into the r
ight perspective or framework. So initiate one only if you have indepth knowledg
e about the topic at hand.
There are different techniques to initiate a Group Discussion and make a good fi
rst impression:
i. Quotes
ii. Definition
iii. Question
iv. Shock statement
v. Facts, figures and statistics
vi. Short story
vii. General statement
~ Quotes
Quotes are an effective way of initiating a Group Discussion.
If the topic of a Group Discussion is: Should the Censor Board be abolished?, yo
u could start with a quote like, 'Hidden apples are always sweet'.
For a Group Discussion topic like, Customer is King, you could quote Sam (Wal-ma
rt) Walton's famous saying, 'There is only one boss: the customer. And he can fi
re everybody in the company -- from the chairman on down, simply by spending his
money somewhere else.'
~ Definition
Start a Group Discussion by defining the topic or an important term in the topic
.
For example, if the topic of the Group Discussion is Advertising is a Diplomatic
Way of Telling a Lie, why not start the Group Discussion by defining advertisin
g as, 'Any paid form of non-personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods
or services through mass media like newspapers, magazines, television or radio b
y an identified sponsor'?
For a topic like The Malthusian Economic Prophecy is no longer relevant, you cou
ld start by explaining the definition of the Malthusian Economic Prophecy.
~ Question
Asking a question is an impactful way of starting a Group Discussion.
It does not signify asking a question to any of the candidates in a Group Discus
sion so as to hamper the flow. It implies asking a question, and answering it yo
urself.
Any question that might hamper the flow of a Group Discussion or insult a partic
ipant or play devil's advocate must be discouraged.
Questions that promote a flow of ideas are always appreciated.
For a topic like, Should India go to war with Pakistan, you could start by askin
g, 'What does war bring to the people of a nation? We have had four clashes with
Pakistan. The pertinent question is: what have we achieved?'
~ Shock statement
Initiating a Group Discussion with a shocking statement is the best way to grab
immediate attention and put forth your point.
If a Group Discussion topic is, The Impact of Population on the Indian Economy,
you could start with, 'At the centre of the Indian capital stands a population c
lock that ticks away relentlessly. It tracks 33 births a minute, 2,000 an hour,
48,000 a day. Which calculates to about 12 million every year. That is roughly t
he size of Australia. As a current political slogan puts it, 'Nothing's impossib
le when 1 billion Indians work together'.'
~ Facts, figures and statistics
If you decide to initiate your Group Discussion with facts, figure and statistic
s, make sure to quote them accurately.
Approximation is allowed in macro level figures, but micro level figures need to
be correct and accurate.
For example, you can say, approximately 70 per cent of the Indian population sta
ys in rural areas (macro figures, approximation allowed).
But you cannot say 30 states of India instead of 28 (micro figures, no approxima
tions).
Stating wrong facts works to your disadvantage.
For a Group Discussion topic like, China, a Rising Tiger, you could start with,
'In 1983, when China was still in its initial stages of reform and opening up, C
hina's real use of Foreign Direct Investment only stood at $636 million. China a
ctually utilised $60 billion of FDI in 2004, which is almost 100 times that of i
ts 1983 statistics."
~ Short story
Use a short story in a Group Discussion topic like, Attitude is Everything.
This can be initiated with, 'A child once asked a balloon vendor, who was sellin
g helium gas-filled balloons, whether a blue-coloured balloon will go as high in
the sky as a green-coloured balloon. The balloon vendor told the child, it is n
ot the colour of the balloon but what is inside it that makes it go high.'
~ General statement
Use a general statement to put the Group Discussion in proper perspective.
For example, if the topic is, Should Sonia Gandhi be the prime minister of India
?, you could start by saying, 'Before jumping to conclusions like, 'Yes, Sonia G
andhi should be', or 'No, Sonia Gandhi should not be', let's first find out the
qualities one needs to be a a good prime minister of India. Then we can compare
these qualities with those that Mrs Gandhi possesses. This will help us reach th
e conclusion in a more objective and effective manner.'
Summarisation Techniques
Most Group Discussions do not really have conclusions. A conclusion is where the
whole group decides in favour or against the topic.
But every Group Discussion is summarised. You can summarise what the group has d
iscussed in the Group Discussion in a nutshell.
Keep the following points in mind while summarising a discussion:
Avoid raising new points.
Avoid stating only your viewpoint.
Avoid dwelling only on one aspect of the Group Discussion.
Keep it brief and concise.
It must incorporate all the important points that came out during the Group Disc
ussion.
If the examiner asks you to summarise a Group Discussion, it means the Group Dis
cussion has come to an end. Do not add anything once the Group Discussion has be
en summarised.
1. always be the initiator and concluder of the Group Discussion then being a pa
rticipant.
2. But if you are particaipant always try to be the most vianl/key participant.
3. put points firmly and always try to get others support too.
4. if you find that the discussion os going offttrack then never loose an oppurt
unity to bring it back to straem this is the best point to score max.
5. try to keep latest information on the topic .
6. be very polite , people may try to provoke you to to get more points but try
to keep cool.
7. most important don't wait for your turn to speak when discussion is on. intur
rupt politely if you want to put forward your points.
8. last but not the least keep atab on the time given for discussion. score poin
ts by wrapping up the discussion if you feel that the discussion is heating but
the time is going to be over.
9. during clonclusion, do end with the conclusion note. that shows your leadersh
ip quality.
Best scoring points are:
1. initiation of discussion,
2.always keeping/trying tokeep discussion on track
3. conclusion on time
4. your capability to keep your cool and listen as well as putting your points.
Group Discussion basically means searching your team player, leadership, communi
cation capability.

I have invented a list of fourthy public speaking topics for discussions and ana
lyses in group discussions. They can be used in speech class for persuasive spea
king assignments. Especially exploring a youth group discussion topic is an idea
l method to test the listening, interhuman, persuasive and presentation skills o
f students.
There are roughly four types of group discussion topics:
* Factual speech topics
* Controversial and argumentative issues
* Abstract discussion material
* Case studies
Factual topics for a group are - as the word says - about facts. This is a sampl
e list of speech topics on current issues and facts:
1. Conspiracy is a very common form of political behaviour.
2. The pros and cons of having a credit card.
3. A chain gang is a modern form of slavery.
4. Why drinking and driving is dangerous to yourself and others.
5. Passive smoking is equally harmful.
6. The economic boycott causes most of the problems in Cuba.
7. International trade barriers work.
8. City curfews help to prevent juvenile crime and to protect youth from vict
imization.
9. The U.N. is mainly based on diplomacy and enhancing relationships.
10. Affirmative action draws people to work they never considered before.
A controversial group discussion topic is a speech topic that has many controver
sies, pros and cons. Keep in mind that all current group discussion topics are n
ot my opinion, but just a sample list of speech topics!
1. Sustainable urban living without the use of excessive natural resources mu
st be our future.
2. Are there extraterrestrials who influence events on Earth?
3. Marijuana has a medical value.
4. Direct mail is a special form of junk mail.
5. The pros and cons of a female President.
6. Online dating chats have nothing to do with a search for a soul mate.
7. Should schools distribute condoms?
8. Most people support embryonic stem cell research.
9. Life imprisonment is a good alternative to capital punishment.
10. What is wrong with child labor?
Abstract group discussion topics are things that cannot be touched, not be easil
y defined or formulated. Just think in a creative manner and start a vivid group
discussion with one of these abstract topics to talk about:
1. The Nostradamus Code
2. Breast Implants
3. Bribery in Business
4. Computer Viruses
5. Bigamy
6. Hidden Persuaders
7. Moral Majority
8. The Hippocratic Oath
9. Political Correctness
10. Vegetarianism
The fourth type of group discussion topics are so-called case studies. You deter
mine a problem and together with the other group members you have to find a sati
sfying solution. These are small group discussion topic ideas. Just modify and a
lter where necessary, these are just guiding light topic ideas:
1. Leadership - What necessary changes are needed in your community organizat
ion and how do you want to lead the process?
2. Malpractice Insurance - Doctors walk out on the job to protest the rising
malpractice insurance costs. What to do about it?
3. Work Ethics - Can we shape workers who have the sense that they serve the
company ánd community?
4. School Violence - What are the real causes of violence and bullying in Sch
ools?
5. Recycling - Sort out how to make money with recycling.
6. Dropouts - Individual attention in safe schools and smaller classes; is th
at the way to stop students to drop out?
7. Iraq - What are the best exit strategies?
8. Speech Privacy - What are the best technologies to safeguard the right of
free speech privacy on the internet?
9. Minimum Wage - Why should we have a minimum wage or why not?
10. Burnout - Should everybody check his or herself of burnout signs? How?
Tip: try to make an inventory of various angles of view and opinions of the grou
p discussion topics.
