14 Evolution of marsupial mammals has resulted in flying phalanger, through adaptive
radiation. 3
Evolution of placental mammals has led to the evolution of a flying squirrel ½ + ½+1+1
(independently)
The resemblance between the two, proves convergent evolution.
15 Human insulin is first made as pro-insulin with A, B and C peptides. C peptide is to 1+1+1 3
be removed before active insulin is formed.
Through rDNA technique, A and B peptide chains are directly made by inserting the
protein coding segments in the host cell and disulphide bonds are created to make
functional insulin.
16 2+1 3

Ori= origin of replication rop_ replication of plasmid.

17 Elution: cutting of separated bands of DNA from agarose gel piece. 1+1+1 3

19 The floating gas holder type of biogas plant is covered with a floating lid so that 1+1+1 3
it can freely rise when methanogens -produces gas inside the biogas plant. The
bio-wastes and cattle dung in the slurry are first soaked in water and mixed in
the mixing tank and then allowed into the main tank. Methanobacterium and
other anaerobic bacteria present in the slurry decompose it to release a mixture
of gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen, known as biogas. The
remaining slurry is used as fertilizer

21 This principle states that “if two closely related species compete for the same
resource,(food, space etc.) the inferior competitor will be eliminated eventually. 3
E.g. (a) Due to greater browsing ability of goats, Abingdon tortoise in
GALAPOGAS islands became extinct. 1+(½ + ½)+1
(b) In the presence of a larger barnacle “BALANUS” the smaller/inferior barnacle
“CHATHAMALUS” is eliminated on the rocky sea coasts of Scotland.
When two species inhabiting the same area exhibit “resource partitioning”  In this
two species competing for the same area, try to avoid competition
22 Tropical latitudes remained relatively undisturbed,less seasonal,more constant and ½X6 3
predicatable, constant environments support niche specialization, more solar energy
leading to more production.
23 Medical termination of pregnancy., First trimester ( 20 weeks) 1+1+1+1
Preethi’s version:To terminate risky/unwanted pregnancy/health and age of the
pregnant woman any two correct reasons 4
Grandma’s version: ethical/social/female foeticide/biased termination as per the
partner’s wish/ any two relevant reasons
As an educated citizen, Preethi’s version is to be supported as an adult woman has to
decide whether she has to bear the pregnancy or not especially in case of accidental
pregnancies.
24 There is a definite region in DNA where the replication originates called as origin of 10 x ½ = 5)
replication, For long DNA molecules since the two strands of DNA cannot be
separated in its entire length, the replication occurs within asmall opening of the 5
DNA helix , referred to as replication fork. The DNA dependent DNA polymerase,
catalyze polymerization only in one direction, that is 5’-->3’, on one strand ( the
template with polarity 3’-->5’) the replication is continuous, while on the other( the
template with polarity 5’->3’) it is discontinuous. The discontinuous synthesized
fragments are later joined by the enzyme DNA ligase.

25 Breathlessness at high attitudes. Cause : Low atmospheric pressure at high altitudes due to
which body does not get enough oxygen. Symptoms : Nausea, fatigue and heart palpitations.
Body adapts by : (a) increasing red blood cell production (b) decreasing binding affinity of 2
haemoglobin (c) by increasing breathing rate.
b. employs ‘sexual deceit’ , flower resembles female bee,Male bee is attracted to what it
perceives as a female ‘pseudocopulates,’ during which pollen dusted on male bee’s body.
2

c. Logistic and Exponential growth 5

Used for removing particulate air pollutants. Removes about 99% of the particulate
pollutants from the exhaust of thermal power plants. Electrode wires that are maintained at ½+½
several thousand volts, which release electrons. Electrons become attached to dust particles
giving a net negative charge. Collecting plates are grounded and attract the charged dust
particles. Velocity of air between the plates must be low enough to allow the dust particles to
fall. If electrostatic precipitator of a thermal plant stops working, all the particulate
pollutants get released and pollute the air.
26 . 2 ½+2 ½

( Five correctlabelling 5x ½ = 2 ½)
Zygote starts mitotic division and gives rise to pro-embryo, globular and heart
shaped, mature embryo with radicle-plumule and two cotyledons, primary 5
endosperm nucleus divides and forms endosperm, which may persist or used up
in nourishing the embryo (5x½ = 2 ½)

(b) each cell of sporogenous tissue gives rise to microspore mother cell, meiosis/
microsporogenesis, microspore Tetrad, 4-pollen grains(male gametophyte ) 2-
