CASE STUDY: KENYA PIPELINE COMPANY
The Kenya Pipeline Company was incorporated on 6 September 1973 and started commercial
operations in 1978 it is a state cooperation that has the responsibility transportation of refined
petroleum products from Mombasa to Nairobi and western Kenya towns of Nakuru, Kisumu and Eldoret.
The overall objective of setting up the company was to provide the Kenya economy with the most
efficient, reliable, safe and least costs means of transporting petroleum products

Kenya Pipeline Company has implemented facility management for it to have smooth operation and to
improve safety of both the workers and the public

Possible incidents which can occur in Pipeline Company

 Industrial accident/injury,
 Gas emergency,
 Communications/cable breakage,
 Electrical emergency,
 Environmental emergency.
 Fire emergency,
 Hazardous product spill

However this problems can be solved by facility management by Emergency Preparedness this includes:
Response Equipment being kept at a strategic place e.g fire extinguishers , Standards of Operation to be
improved , requirements and including Education and Training of individuals and crews on what to do in
the case of emergency

Quick emergency response is possible with good facility management system emergency Response is to
ensure a rapid recovery from a serious accident or serious event.

A quick response will

 Minimize injury to the public and company workers


 Minimize damage of people property,
 Assist in restoring normal conditions

By a having a good facility you will be able to have emergency exit .The personnel will be educated on
emergency exits incase the company had no such emergency exits during construction, the facility
management manager will advise the company to do so i.e emergency priorities can also be taken to
action e.g evacuating personnel from the area, identifying resources at hand to start rescue mission

If the emergency is the result of a broken power line or electric cable, call the Kenya power Company
first then Kenya power personnel will initiate the emergency response and take charge.
The priority of actions to be taken for example during a fire emergency

a. Clear the area,

b. Protect yourself and others,

c. If possible minimize property damage,

d. If possible protect the environment.

Benefits of facility management in kpc

 Make recommendations for the introduction, implementation and enforcement of safety and
health policies and procedures at the work site.
 Assist in the identification of occupational safety and health hazards in the workplace and
recommend
 Facility management give means of controlling these hazards.
 Facility management in KPC helps promote safety and health programs for the education and
information of the employees.
 It will help to receive and assist with investigating complaints respecting safety and health of
any person
 Facility management will help to review the information gathered from the monitoring and
measuring procedures and give advice to the employer.
 Facility management help Participate in planned inspections and accident investigations at the
work site, concerning the safety and health of employees.

CONCLUSION

Kenya pipeline company should establish a good facility management system for good emergency
response, because petroleum product are highly flammable and in case of an accident e.g fire they
can cause very tremendous damages to the environment and destruction of properties .prevention
is better than cure.
