CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Test may be designed as a device to reinforce learning and to motivate
learners or as amours’ of assessing the learner’s performance in the language
learning. It aims to measure the student’s ability in language and to know how
extent the students have understanding about the language materials that teacher
have given them. In making questions for the test, the testy items should be based
on the syllabus of teaching. The language materials may include language skills
that are reading, writing, speaking, and listening skill. Beside language skills,
there are two important things in language testing that are grammar and
vocabulary.
One of the most popular tests in the world is TOEFL test. This test is
conducted to measure the English skill of non-native speaker. It has three types
such as Paper Based Test (PBT), Computer Based Test (CBT), and Internet-Based
Testing (IBT). TOEFL test includes listening, structure and written expression,
reading, and writing. It is a product of ETS (Educational Testing Service).
In this paper, the writer try to construct some questions like TOEFL test in
the form of listening, structure, reading, vocabulary and writing test. The writer
constructs the questions for the third grade students of Senior High School. The
writer chooses this level because the students on this level will face the new
experience for their live, continue their study to University. Nowadays, study
abroad becomes the popular trend for senior high school graduate, but many
countries especially in United States require a TOEFL certificate to register.
Actually, it is not only in United States, but many universities in this country also
require a TOEFL test as an entrance test for students. Thus, the writer construct
these questions like a TOEFL test based on the material or syllabus of the
students’ level to introduce the students and make them familiar with the TOEFL
test since they are in senior high school.
B. Coverage
Based on the background above, the writer make some questions which
consist of 45 items. Those 45 items covers three language skills namely listening,
reading, and writing, while the two language elements are grammar vocabulary. In
detail description, listening test consists of 10 items, reading test consists of 10
items, grammar test consists of 10 items, and vocabulary test consists of 10 items,
and writing text consists of 5 items. So, the total numbers of the test are 45 items.
Before making the questions, the writer conducted some following procedures:
1. Reading some TOEFL books.
2. Understanding the structures of TOEFL.
3. Reading the syllabus of the third grade students of senior high school.
4. Making test blue-print
5. Making the questions that consist of 45 numbers in the forms of listening,
reading, grammar, vocabulary, and writing.

4. Blue-print test : Syllabus of the third grade students of senior high
school.
5. Test Techniques : Multiple-Choice and writing
These questions are made for the third grade students of Senior High
School level because they need to know and familiar with the TOEFL test.
They only have one year more to study in Senior High School and then
continue their study to University. Nowadays, many students interested to
continue their study not only in this country, but they prefer to study abroad
because in this globalization era, competition is very strict. One of the
requirements to study abroad is TOEFL certificate. Thus, the teacher needs to
introduce and make the students familiar with the TOEFL test or questions
form like TOEFL test.
CHAPTER II
TEST CONSTRUCTION

A. The Constructed Test


The writer constructed an objective language test in the form of multiple
choice and writing tests which consists of 45 items. Those 45 items covers three
language skills namely listening, reading, and writing, while two language
elements namely grammar and vocabulary.
a. Listening
In part, you will hear conversations between two people. After each
conversation, you will hear a question about the conversation. The
conversation and questions will not be repeated. After you hear a question,
read the four possible answers in your test book and choose the best answer.
Then, on your answer sheet, find the number of the question and fill in the
space that corresponds to the letter of the answer you have chosen.

1. On the recording, you hear:


(man) : I have a problem with my school assignment. Could you
help me?
(woman) : My pleasure.
(narrator) : What does the woman mean?
In your test book, you read:
(A) The woman feels not sure about him.
(B) The woman ignores to help him.
(C) The woman is willing to help him.

2. On the recording, you hear:


(woman) : How much are the vegetables?
(man) : Fifteen dollars.
(narrator) : Where does the conversation probably take place?

3. On the recording, you hear:


(man) : The math test was so difficult.
(woman) : I’ll say!

activities, foods, shopping centers, museums, parks, and the
local theater. There is also a federal government center in
Putrajaya which is located in south of Kuala Lumpur. It has
modern infrastructure like Kuala Lumpur international airport.

Global Warming is the rise in the average temperature of the earth
atmosphere. It began since 1980 after revolution Industry has applied,
Industry started to produce many pollution. There are many causes of Global
Warming, but the most influence is greenhouse gasses. Human activities such
as burning fossil fuel produce waste gas which is carbon dioxide. As the
result, the temperature of the earth is raising and earth is getting hotter.
An increase in global warming will cause some problem such as
increasing hurricanes due to increase speed of wind, massive crop failure as
effect of climate change. Species extinction and increasing the sea level as the
result of melting process in polar.

Dinosaurs were the group of ancient animals of dinosauria. They first
emerged about 230 million years ago in the Triassic period. In 1842, Sir
Richard Owen created the word dinosaur. It came from Greek
words deino.s, meaning “terrible” and sauros, meaning “lizard”. Dinosaurs
lived on earth for about 140 million years. During the dinosaurian era, the
days were short. The sun was not as hot as it is today.
There were many kinds of dinosaurs. Some of them were very big and
some others were small. Some dinosaurs ate leaves and some others ate meat.
Some dinosaurs could fly. What happened to dinosaurs? Dinosaurs became
extinct because there was a large comet hitting the earth. The comet caused

Social media is very popular since 2006. It is an online media in which
the users can easily participate, share, and create the content of blog, social
networking, and the virtual world. It has positive and negative impacts for the
users.
There are many positive impacts of social media. First is worldwide
connectivity which helps people to seek a new. The second is real-time
information sharing which let people exchange information via chat. The
third is can be used to promote a business. Besides, social media also has
negative impacts. First, people become lazy to communicate in real world.
Second, social networking sites can cause people to be less empathetic in the
real world. Third, there are many images of pornography and violence.
Social media should be used for positive activities. People have to be
restricted in using social media due to many negative impacts of it. That is not
good yet for them since they cannot decide which one is good or bad.

CHAPTER III
CONLUSION

Making questions like TOEFL test for the third grade students of senior
high school is a little bit difficult because the questions should be based on the
material or syllabus of their level. The teacher should make the students know and
familiar with the questions form like in TOEFL test since in senior high school. It
is not only for the third grade students, but it can be for the first or second grade
students of senior high school as long as the questions appropriate with the
syllabus of the their level. Besides, in order to know whether the questions made
are reliable, valid and not very difficult, or even there are a few of tests are very
easy, those questions should be tested.
