In "Le Splendide Hôtel," a new chorus and ensemble piece for the Vancouver-based Arkora
Collective, I hope to set selections from Arthur Rimbaud’s French language "Illuminations"
along with excerpts from John Ashberry’s English translation. "Illuminations" is an elusive set
of poems—a “disordered collection of magic lantern slides” as Ashberry puts it in the
introduction to his translation. Just as meaning in Rimbaud’s poetry often resides in between
the words of the text, my setting will emphasize ambiguity and the liminal spaces between
word, sound, and memory through the combination of microtonal and equal-tempered
instruments in combination with the layering of Ashberry’s English translation against
Rimbaud’s original French text.
