SECTION 4: First aid measures

4.1. Description of first aid measures
General If in doubt, seek medical advice.
If there is any suspicion of ammonia gas left in the emergency area, the
rescue workers must wear self-contained breathing apparatus with filter KII.
No action shall be taken involving any personal risk or without suitable
training.
Inhalation Provide rest, warmth and fresh air. Rinse nose and mouth with water. If
respiratory problems, artificial respiration/oxygen. Get medical attention.
Skin contact Promptly flush contaminated skin with water. Promptly remove clothing if
soaked through and flush the skin with water. Continue to rinse for at least
15 minutes. Get medical attention immediately.
Ammonia, anhydrous Page 3 of 8
Eye contact Immediate first aid is necessary! Promptly rinse eyes with plenty of water
(tempered at 20-30°C) for at least 15 minutes. Remove any contact lenses.
Hold eyelids apart. To hospital or eye specialist. Continue rinsing during
transportation to a physician.
Ingestion Not relevant. NEVER MAKE AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON VOMIT OR DRINK
FLUIDS!

Acute symptoms and effects Inhalation: Intense pain in the nose and throat, lacrimation, sneezing,
coughing, cramps, or swelling of the larynx and respiratory distress. Risk of
loss of consciousness.
Skin contact: Serious chemical burns. Liquefied gas may cause frostbites.
Eye contact: Chemical burns.

SECTION 5: Firefighting measures

5.1. Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media Do not extinguish burning gas. Cut off source of gas if safe to du so - IF
NOT POSSIBLE, LEAVE GAS TO BURN.
Extinguish secondary fire with: Carbon dioxide (CO2). Powder. Sand. Foam.
Improper extinguishing media Do not use water jet.
5.2. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Personal protective equipment Self-contained breathing apparatus may be required by rescue workers. In
case of evacuation, use escape mask where possible.
Other Information Containers close to fire should be removed immediately or cooled with water.

and Rescue Service (call 999) in case of spillage to drains or the aquatic
environment.
6.3. Methods and material for containment and cleaning up
Methods for cleaning Advice other people to move away from the risk area. Smaller quantities of
residue may be collected by an absorbent. Absorb in vermiculite, dry sand or
earth and place into containers. Collect in a suitable container and dispose as
