C u r r e n t   Haley Carson is a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma


s i t u a t i o n who is attending for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public
a n a l y s i s
Relations. She participates in the Public Relations program at
the Gaylord College of Journalism. She is searching for a full-
time Public Relations or Marketing internship in the summer
of 2018. 

M i s s i o n Haley aims to facilitate corporate social media integration and


S t a t e m e n t create engaging content for users through a plethora of social
media channels.

developing and implementing campaign strategies for all
relative fields and continues to grow her network.

Most students graduating from the University of Oklahoma

a n a l y s i s with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations will have similar
opportunities and skills as Haley does such as AP style, multi-
tasking, time management, and Public Relations coursework.
She, however, plans to make herself stand out by developing
skills just brushed on in classes and applying real life Public
Relations technique to her campaigns and work. 
Place: Haley aspires to work with a Public Relations or related
m a r k e t i n g agency in the Dallas area post-graduation and eventually move
s t r a t e g y to the California industry for entertainment and corporate PR.
Price: Her values include honesty, transparency, competition,
faithfulness, personality, and confidence.
Promotion: She plans to market herself by the skills she is
confident in such as multi-tasking, graphic design on Adobe
Photoshop, marketing experience from previous internships
with data analysis, ability to research thoroughly and be a
strong-willed publicist with an extensive network.
Target Audience: She is attempting to appeal to job recruiters
in those areas who work in Public Relations or related
agencies and firms. She also hopes to progress into In-House
Public Relations for a company she feels confident in. 
Brand Statement: "As a focused public relations specialist and
innovator, I generate promotional and informative creative
content for organizations by developing diverse and cultured
concepts."
Goals/Objectives: Haley aspires to be one of the most
recognized people in the profession based on their work ethic,
the company they market for as CMO, and a strong player in
the Public Relations industry. 
Integrated Marketing Communications Plan: By keeping her
brand consistent in all ways of communication such as social
media, emails, messages, and profiles she can market herself
with consistency to her brand.
Budgeting & Action Plan: Haley can manage her budget by
receiving the same return on investment as she invests either
in time or money. She needs to keep an action table to monitor
her progress within timeframes and goals, as well.

From the people she sent the survey to, Haley learned that most describe her as
dependable/reliable, able to make other's jobs easier by being energetic or cheerful and that
most think she is loyal. The results demonstrate that brand is built on credibility and she is
able to take the notes she has learned as well and build upon those soft skills. As a loud person,
she will need to learn when to listen and when to appreciate what others are saying. Haley is
now aware that she has some valuable traits for the industry, but also some traits she needs to
work on.

A personal branding statement will be beneficial to all applicants of


the Public Relations industry because it allows recruiters and
colleagues a chance to identify what makes a person as a brand
unique. For Haley personally, she believes it provides a clear map to
all of her values, what she is able to do and willing to do for a
company, and allows an individualistic take on her brand. The
statement allows a quick pitch of herself in a fast-paced environment
and allows all the assets she has to be offered.

A professional email address will make her brand look reliable, trustworthy, and make it
recognizable as her own. It allows recruiters to contact her directly in a formal and professional
manner and respond at her convenience. It will also allow direct conversations for anyone who is
looking to start a conversation about the industry or about a job opportunity. It will be beneficial in
years to come as a source of communication in a corporate setting.

A business card will make her personal brand stand out in a crowd of other business cards because she has
made it creative and personable with her brand statement and a picture. It will give recruiters a better
understanding of her ethics, work skills, and a better essence of who she is as a publicist and a person. The
business card will also allow Haley's network to grow with people from a plethora of backgrounds and
companies.

A blog is beneficial to a Public Relations person because it allows recruiters and job scouters to be able to see concrete
writing examples. Blogs are more informal than most writing platforms so it also allows the author's character and
personality to be exhibited. A blog allows the blogger to be more competitive in the field because they would have
physical writing examples to submit to jobs while other applicants might not have a house to store writings they have
done. In other words, a publicist with a blog is more set to succeed due to a higher increase in the standard that they
are competing on.

S u m m a r y

Haley has previously already asked one of her references to recommend her via LinkIn. She asked Madison because
she worked for her for two years so she would be the most valuable person to recommend Haley as she knows her
work ethic. She would ask her reference, Madison Martin, to recommend her. She has watched her grow from a low-
level into a position right below managerial but still contains many leadership traits. Haley adds people to her LinkedIn
that are colleagues from either Texas A&M University or The University of Oklahoma, family/personal friends, people
she knows from past experiences, or people who allow her network to grow and that she can learn from. LinkedIn is
an invaluable tool to maintain and keep connections with people met from events, organizations, college experiences,
or networking events. Public Relations flourishes on LinkedIn and also offers the latest news in the field. It also allows
Haley to keep the conversations going in the hopes that they might connect her to someone who hires people or offers
internships with a company she aspires to work at.

S u m m a r y

Compared to Haley's older Facebook, the updates to her page allow her to appear more professional and poised. Her
brand is also consistent among a plethora of platforms, so by changing her picture to her headshot, it allows
recruiters and job searchers to identify her and her brand more clearly. Facebook is one of the most commonly used
social media platforms which is why recruiters would be more likely to search for candidates on this platform. With a
consistent brand message, it allows them to see a clear vision of the person and their values. Facebook is also more
personal as a social media platform so they would be able to identify if the person could fit into their work culture or
environment before conducting an interview, as well.

Haley created a Public Relations Twitter as a way to tweet about subjects


that are relevant to her degree. She wants to be informed of recent
news, PR related information, and items that will create her brand on
Twitter. Twitter is another commonly used social media platform.
Twitter is unique in that it attracts a large audience with varied and
diverse lifestyles. Twitter is a valuable tool for PR majors because it
allows publicist to promote their ideas and connect with the news on a
personal level as well as provide input.

S u m m a r y

 A resume, cover letter, and reference list will help employers see the depth and
qualification that Haley has in the field of Public Relations and her work ethic. A
resume displays previous jobs and opportunities in which she learned the skills he
now has. A cover letter allows details that were omitted from the resume to be
exhibited and further explained on as well as provides speciation for the specific job
she is applying for. A reference list allows future employers to call people who have
associated themselves with Haley and her work qualities to see if she would be a
good match for the job and the company. All of these sectors allows her to
demonstrate her capabilities and instill trust in her as a job prospect.

An online digital portfolio can act as a housing central for all of Haley's brand items and skill sets. It can demonstrate
examples of previous works and projects without the restriction of page limits, character numbers, etc. that other
platforms use to monitor content. This will help Haley keep a constant timeline of her work, allow her to update her
skills as needed, and exhibit the best aspects of her brand.
