"Almost Heaven, West Virginia"

Did you know students at the West Virginia University (WVU) Morgantown campus come from

107 nations and all 50 states? A popular event at WVU is its football games, where "Take Me

Home Country Roads", written by John Denver, has been sung at every WVU home football

game since 1972. The school was founded in 1867 under the 1862 Morrill Land Grant Colleges

Act. Attending West Virginia University sets one up for post-baccalaureate success because of

its stellar academics, unique student opportunities, and widespread student diversity.

School of Public Health and more (wvu.edu). Depending on which school a student attends,

WVU will help the students be the best person they can possibly be. There are over 11 special

academic programs. These academics programs cater to multiple groups of people including

military personnel. WVU also has an honors college, scholar's programs and other programs.

(wvu.edu). Studying abroad is a fantastic way to enrich a student in a culture different than their
own. Although the United States is a big melting pot, it is also crucial for a student’s

development to experience the culture of another country. Another example of the students’

opportunities are the student organizations. WVU offers hundreds of organizations for students

to participate in. The student organizations range from Greek life to business and politics to

sports (wvu.edu). Student organizations are essential to a student’s development. These

organizations help students become socialized and meet other people with similar interests.

Students at WVU can help others through the Center for Service and Learning, giving class

credits for community service and promotes events such as the Random Acts of Kindness week

(usnews.com).

These events are structured to bring together different cultures and traditions (wvu.edu).

Diversity is a vital commodity everywhere, not just on campus. If students are only exposed to

people of their gender or race, they aren’t learning anything. Another example of this is the male

to female percentage and the ethnic groups that make up West Virginia University. At WVU,

males make up 53.6% of students and females make up 46.4% of students (collegefactual.com).

Although West Virginia university is predominantly white, there are other ethnic groups of
