particularly Michael Kors, has been the best this
year at overcoming these technical limitations for
a timepiece that combines the fashionable ap-

all the functionality that Android Wear 2.0 brings.
The great achievement with the £349 Sophie
(named after the fashion house’s most popular

target market of young, fashionable ladies wants.
It is light and stylish with just enough bling with its
crystal encrusted bezel. The screen is sharp and
readable, even in bright daylight. And the watch
has enough processing power and storage to run
the messaging, social media, calendar and music

It even has Google Assistant on board, so eve-

This provides a considerable opportunity for app

atchPro spoke to some of the UK’s biggest retail-
ers straight after Baselworld to ask them which
watches impressed them most. Almost unani-
mously, they enthused about the Rolex Oyster
Perpetual Sky-Dweller in white or yellow Rolesor, a
patented alloy of steel and 18ct white or yellow gold.
The yellow gold version looks best suited to a Middle or
Far Eastern customer, but the white Rolesor edition, with its
sunburst blue dial, is a British classic in the making. There are
tweaks to previous precious metal Sky-Dwellers, including
rectangular index hour markers and slightly longer hands, that
will appeal to hardcore collectors. For Rolex retailers, it was the
£10,600 price tag that caught the eye — around three times
cheaper than the usual circa £30,000 cost.
Rolex doesn’t do dramatic change, so customers will be
reassured by the familiar world traveller dual time zone dial
that presents a second time on a rotating disc that sits below
centre to give room to the red hour marker and Rolex logo at
12 o’clock.
The watch houses the calibre 9001 automatic movement,
which Rolex describes as one of the most complex they have
ever developed.

o watchmaker shifts more units in the UK than
Sekonda. It is also a great British story because the
once-Russian business is owned by Time Products,
which designs all the watches at its Leicestershire
headquarters.
Other glossy watch magazines might look down their
noses at sub-£100 watches flying off the shelves of H.Samuel,
Watch Shop, Amazon, Argos and hundreds of other retailers,
but WatchPro is wowed by the attention to detail that ensures
fashionable yet timeless design, reliable build quality and slick
logistics that ensure the watches are always as fresh as daily
bread when they reach retailers and their customers. The fact
that this can be done for watches often costing less than £50 is
all the more remarkable and noteworthy.
In some ways it is the Time Products and Sekonda business
that we admire as much as any individual timepiece, but this
is Watches of the Year, so we have picked out this Men’s Steel
piece, which at £99.99 epitomises the value for money you get
with this brand. It is bristling with functions and has a high end
finish that makes it feel like a piece costing four times as much.
