The One Who Abandons Salah is a Kafir:

1. It is narrated from Jabir bin 'Abdullah that he said: I

heard the Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬say:

‘‘What makes one a Mushrik and a Kafir is abandoning

Salah.’’1

2. It is narrated from Abdullah bin Buraidah that his father

said: The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬said:

"That which differentiates us from them (i.e disbelievers) is

our performance of Salah. Anyone who abandons it
becomes a Kafir."2

3. It is narrated from Ubadah bin As-Samit that they
pledged an oath of allegiance to the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬, that they
would not dispute with their leaders unless they saw clear
disbelief (Kufr) in them, for which there is evidence from
Allah 3

4. It was narrated from Umm Salamah that the People asked

the Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬:

"Should we not fight them (Muslim Amir)?" He (‫ )ﷺ‬said: "No,

not so long as they offer prayers."4

Shyakh al-Uthaimeen (‫ )رحمه الله‬said:

''So, it is understood from this Hadith that if they do not pray,

they should be fought; and the Hadith of 'Ubadah proves that
they should not be disputed with.
Therefore it is with greater reason that they should not be
fought unless it is due to clear disbelief (Kufr) for which there
is an evidence from Allah.

So, from these two Ahadith, it may be derived that
abandoning prayer is clear disbelief for which there is an
evidence from Allah."5

5. It is narrated on the authority of Ubadah bin As-Samit, who

said: The Messenger of Allah (‫ )ﷺ‬advised us:

"Do not associate partners with Allah and do not

intentionally abandon prayer, because whoever
intentionally and deliberately abandoned it is a disbeliever
and he is come out from religion (Islam)."6

6. It is narrated from Abdullah bin Shaqiq Al-'Uqayli:

''The Companions of Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬did not think that

neglecting any deed made a person Kafir, apart from
neglecting the Salat.’’7

7. It is narrated that 'Umar bin al-Khatab (Ra) said:

"He who abandons Salah has nothing at all to do with the

religion of Islam"8

8. It is narrated that 'Umar bin al-Khatab (Ra) said:

"There is no Islam for one who abandoned prayer"9

9. It is narrated that the Prophet's (‫ )ﷺ‬companions Sa'd (Ra)

& Ali bin Abi Talib (Ra) said:

"He who abandons Salah would have disbelieved in Islam"10

10. Ayyub As-Sikhtynah (‫ )رحمه الله‬said:

"Abadoning Prayer is undoubeted blashemy (Kufr)."

Imam Ibn Rajab Ibn Hanbali (‫ )رحمه الله‬said:

"This very opinion was adopted by a group of early as well

as later scholars, including Ibn Al-Mubarak, Imam Ahmad,
and Ishaq.

Ishaq said that there was a 'ijma (consensus) among all

scholars on this view"11
