On the day that the
US formally ends combat op-
erations that began in Iraq
over 7 years ago, President
Barack Obama visited Ft.
Bliss to meet with soldiers.
There was a small crowd of
about 100 soldiers, soldiers’
families, and area VIPs there
to greet him as he got off Air
Force One at Biggs Field.
The President was on the
ground for a little over an
hour to speak with about 180
soldiers in a closed ceremony.
He also spoke privately to
Gold Star families, those who
have lost parents and spouses
to the war in Iraq, including
one Army wife who just days
ago lost her husband.
“I’m going to make a speech
to the nation tonight. It’s not
going to be a victory lap. It’s
not going to be self-congratu-
latory. There’s still a lot of
work that we’ve got to do to
make sure that Iraq is an ef-
fective partner with us. But
the fact of the matter is that
because of the extraordinary
service that all of you have
done, and so many people
here at Fort Bliss have done,

Many of the public officials
who met with the President
re-iterated that today was not
a day necessarily to celebrate
or to stop being active and
vigilant. Rather, today’s mes-
sage marks a transition period
where Iraq will have to move
ahead with its own future as
its people see fit to create.

after the President departed,
“It is now their responsibility.
We’re not where we should
be. There is still a lot of work
left to do.” In fact, a large
military presence of about
50,000 American troops are
still in Iraq to “aid and assist”
the government on their road
to independence. This new
non-hostile transition will be
called “Operation New
Dawn.”
El Paso and Fort Bliss will
continue to provide a central
base for future operations.

currently seeing the “largest
expansion of any American
military base since World
War II.” General Pittard was
visibly moved that President
Obama singled out Ft. Bliss
and unanswered. Specifically,

many minds. Congressman
Reyes travelled down from
Washington, D.C., with the
President, and voiced these
same concerns. Reyes denied
the idea that Mexico is a

For 53 Years, Fiesta de las Flores has energized the

El Paso Community

It all started on to 1 a.m. with Los Rieleros LULAC District 4 Director,

Labor Day in 1953 as a way
to commemorate and to ap-
preciate Hispanics and His-
panic culture in El Paso,
Texas. It started, also, as a
way to maintain the heritage
and tradition that has been a
part of El Paso through thick
and through thin, through bad
times and through good.
LULAC Council 132 has kept
the tradition alive.
Nick Dominguez, the Chair-
man of this year’s Senior Ap-
preciation Dance, said that
anywhere from 55,000 to as
many as 70,000 people attend
the Fiesta. “We began this
year by thanking our Lord for
the many benefits He has
showered on us, with our Fi-
esta de las Flores Mass at St.
Pius Catholic Church on Sun-
day, August 15, 2010, at 11
a.m.,” Dominguez said. “We

Paso County Coliseum are
thrown open for the three-day

On Saturday, September 4,
for example, the Fiesta begins
at 1 p.m. when gates open for
the Senior Health Screening
held inside the El Paso
County Coliseum, and con-
cludes at 3 p.m. This is fol-
lowed by the Senior
Appreciation Dance from 3
p.m. to 7 p.m., with admis-
sion being free for all seniors.
The Fiesta action starts at 7
p.m. with an El Paso group
that has continued to entertain
for many decades, Sunny
Powell & the Night Dream-
ers.
But, that’s not all. On Sunday,
September 5, the last day of
the Fiesta, the military re-
ceives its plaudits during Mil-
itary Appreciation Night,
when all active and retired
military personnel and their
families are admitted free of
charge. A Military Award and
Recognition ceremony con-
tinues at the Outdoor Fiesta
stage at 7:30 p.m.
This major highlight of the
Fiesta de las Flores is an
evening that’s set aside to pay
tribute to military personnel
and their families. Their serv-
ice to our nation is honored to
show the great appreciation
that only citizens of El Paso
can bestow. Another event is
the annual Huacha Tourna-
ment, a competition that has
been in existence 45 years
and is uniquely Hispanic in
nature. The tournament at-
tracts over 80 two-man teams,
and is sanctioned by the
World Huacha Tournament
Association.
With educational opportuni-
ties in mind, Fiesta de las Flo-
res is the largest fund-raising
activity for LULAC Council
132. Since 1953, the Fiesta
has helped the Council award
more than $1.7 million in
scholarships to local students
seeking higher education.
So, come one, come all is the
chant that attracts thousands
to events that include food,
game booths, arts and crafts, a
car show, the Fiesta de las
Flores pageant – with beauti-
ful young women competing
for scholarships - and the
evening concerts.

months, said that the Presi-
dent thanked the soldiers
and their spouses for their
sacrifices.

Predict Weather
with Weather
Proverbs
I received an email from an eastside reader of the
El Paso Spotlight about weather proverbs. This reader
wanted to know how many weather proverbs I knew of that I could share.

First and foremost, the purpose of weather lore was to instruct early farmers, sailors,
herdsmen, and others on how to predict the weather. Its poetic nature made it easier to
pass on to later generations. People who make their living outdoors depend on the
weather. That has always been the case. Today, meteorologists make use of satellites,
weather balloons, super computers, Doppler radar, and a complex communications net-
work to produce reasonably accurate daily weather forecasts. In earlier times, however,
folks had to rely on other weather indicators to advise them on what kind of plans to
make. Some of these indicators have a true correlation with factors that do affect the
weather. Others have no relationship at all to the weather. So, here is the list I know of:

● Unusual clearness in the atmosphere, with distant objects seen distinctly, indicates rain.
● Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
● Evening red and morning gray are sure signs of a fine day. Evening gray and morning
red put on your hat or you'll wet your head.
● If it rains before seven, it will clear before eleven.
● Rain from the south prevents the drought, but rain from the west is always best.
● Anvil-shaped clouds bring on a gale.
● A cloud with a round top and flat base carries rainfall on its face.
Weather Trivia:
● When small clouds join and thicken, expect rain.
● Black clouds in the north in winter indicates approaching snow.

Nephtali de Leon: Using his skills to Long Distance
protect Chicanos
I first met Nephtali de Leon
at one of our Floricantos –
back in the day when we
Chicano writers, actors, musi-
cians, poets had no place to
exhibit our wordy wares, so,
we would sing for each other;
we would gather under a
common roof to shout our ag-
onies and our triumphs to a
waiting public. I think it was
in Alburquerque when I first
heard Nephtali expressing his
anger, his love, and his Chi-
cano pride.
“If life is a work in
progress, then all those who
get over from day to day are
artists, mediocre or great.
Those who enhance such ac-
tivities are crafts-doers.
Those who burn upon the
coals of their chosen profes-
sion are called geniuses, mad-
men or women, and
sometimes artists. Art can be
beautiful or torrid, but when
it serves humankind, then it is
the fire that creates the
phoenix rising out of the
ashes.” Thus speaks Nephtali,

poet, artist, migrant worker.
It’s as a migrant
worker where Nephtali
shines, because he has never
forgotten his roots. If he is
self-taught and self-educated,
and if he continues to rail at
America’s treatment of farm-
workers, it’s only because he
knows that world. He knows
the trials and tribulations
which his people undergo in
order to survive. Armed with
a load of his poems, cuentos,
retablos, and dedications to
his craft/art, Nephtali never
tires of taking on new hori-
zons. His latest work is to re-
mind people that
farmworkers not only must
endure a blistering sun under
which to work, but, there are
more ominous consequences.
He laughs at efforts by some
farmworker activists who
offer to teach farm work to
those who say that undocu-
mented people steal jobs
from them, even farm work.
Farm workers are only too
willing to train these com-
plainers. But, really, are
American citizens going to
risk their lives working as
farm workers do? The
thought boggles the mind.
Even comedian Stephen Col-
bert was willing to give up
his day job to go pick the
fruit from America’s farms
and vineyards. Well, Nephtali
figures, here’s their chance to
take jobs away from those
who are here illegally. But, be
forewarned. What could start
out as a joke could have dire
results if people aren’t care-
ful.
To illustrate his point, Neph-
tali, in conjunction with the
U.S. Environmental Protec-
tion Agency, has written a
play that the twain are pre-
senting throughout farming
communities in the U.S. Ti-
tled: “El Moscas y Los Pesti-
cidas.” His dramedy deals
with the dangers encountered
by farm workers who are
working in fields that have
been sprayed with pesticides.
He brought his play to El
Paso, where my good friend,
Priscilla Portillo played the
part of the farmworker’s
wife. She worries that her
husband, coming in from a
day of working the crop,
could contaminate their home
and their children.
Although it’s meant as a com-
edy, there’s nothing funny
about the way farmworkers
and their families have suf-
fered through the years be-
cause of a farmer’s penchant
that his fruit be free of in-
sects, and that it be shining
for a buyer’s table. Here are
some of the tips from the EPA
and from Nephtali’s pen for
those who work the fields.
“Wear clothes with long
sleeves and long pants, shoes
or boots, socks, a hat and/or
scarf and gloves; make sure
they are clean and without
holes;
“Always wash your hands be-
fore eating, drinking, smok-
ing, chewing gum or going to
the bathroom; do not cook
food with wood found in the
field;
“Pesticides get on your work
clothes and then on your skin;
wash work clothes before
wearing them again; wash
work clothes separately from
other clothes;
“Wash if your eyes or skin
begin to itch or burn; use lots
of water; tell your foreman
you should go to a doctor; if
you feel sick at work
(headache, stomachache,
vomiting, dizzy) tell your
foreman; keep children away
from pesticides.
I’ll stop here because there
are more rules for safety than
can be written in this one col-
umn. But, workers beware,
Nephtali cautions. For those
who would replace farm-
workers just to make a point,
this, of course, is more seri-
ous than they may have
thought. Want to replace a
farmworker because he’s tak-
ing your job? Then, be aware
of the consequences, because
working the fields is no joke.
I’m glad to see Nephtali still
using his skills as a
writer/artist/activist to protect
Chicanos. Te avientas, carnal!

Representation
As you are well aware, I have
been very vocal about a poten-
tially bad outcome to the census
count that was done earlier this
year. Because of my public stance
on the subject, there have been
many comments both on airwaves
and on print media as to my mo-
tives.
The most prevalent comment pos-
tulates that I am afraid of losing my seat to redistricting.
Nothing could be further from the truth. I will always be
comfortable with the decision that voters make even if it
means being out of office. I have diligently made it the
mission of my office to be available to the public for as-
sistance. I gauge my success by the fact that the voters
have re-elected me to office. If my office closes its doors
to the people, then I will be booted and rightfully so.
That brings me to the point of this article. I did not mean
to heap any praise on myself; only to share my under-
standing of how important it is to respond to constituents.
Since the 1990 census and subsequent redistricting, our
county has had representation from elected officials who
are seated as far away as 600 miles (San Antonio). The
opportunity for El Pasoans in the east part of the county to
talk face to face with a congressman were very limited.
The incumbent readily visited El Paso to attend fundrais-
ers but spent very little time rubbing elbows with farmers
or colonia residents. At one point our state senator from
the San Antonio area had staff and office here but today
many in the county have no access to that office.
This scenario is the reason for my concern about the cen-
sus.
The fact that we have state and federal representation
from so far away is difficult. However, one office holder
has shown his dedication to making his office available to
the public. Congressman Ciro Rodriguez has visited El
Paso more times in just two years than his predecessor
had in over ten years of office. If Ciro isn’t visiting the
constituents then his staff has made the trips here.
Initially, Cesar Blanco was here for quite a long time
mainly because he is a native. Now that Cesar is the main
staffer in Washington, Jaime Solis makes very frequent
visits with or without the congressman.
Congressman Rodriguez visited El Paso County during
the flooding that took place in 2006. He walked through
the devastation that was reaped upon the Ramirez Pecan
Orchard and offered support to the owners.
Since then he has been here many times. Just this past
week, Ciro was at Ft. Bliss along with Congressman
Reyes to welcome President Obama. The three visited
with the soldiers who recently returned from Iraq. After
that event, Ciro and his staff immediately drove to the
Montana Vista area to meet with constituents.
If every elected official representing small parts of El
Paso County had as much respect for the residents in east
El Paso as Congressman Ciro Rodriguez, then I would not
be so concerned. But the fact of the matter is that it is
easy for those who live hundreds of miles away to forget
our part of the state; that is until election time.

As a teen, I remember using
all my strength to open a
giant valve in a ditch that di-
verted part of the Rio Grande
into my grandparents' citrus
orchards. The brown water
would bubble up from the
valve and flood into the or-
chards, following the little
trenches I had made with a
hoe. This method is called
flood irrigation and is the
least efficient way to use
water. Yet 93 percent of the
world's farmers irrigate their
crops using this method.
In my younger days, I never
would have believed that the
mighty Rio Grande ever
would dry up. Yet today it —
along with the Nile, Ganges,
Colorado and many other
rivers — does not always
reach the sea.
Westerners seem to take water
for granted on this sparkling
blue planet. Yet less than
0.003 percent of all fresh
water is available to us hu-
mans. The rest is locked
tightly into ice or buried too
deep for our powerful pumps
to reach, according to the
United Nations. We still man-
age to use more than a quarter
of the Earth's total fresh water
in natural circulation, much to
the dismay of our fellow crea-
tures. But even that doesn't
slake our thirst.
Worldwide demand for water
has tripled over the past 50
years as the world's popula-
tion has doubled. Millions of
wells, powerful diesel pumps
and the diverting of streams
and rivers are drawing down
the water table below the nat-
ural recharge levels. To put it
bluntly, we are using up our
children's water today. What
will we leave for our grand-
children to drink?
Humans need less than two
gallons of water per day for
drinking and cooking. Yet we
must have 1,000 gallons more
to grow our food. In affluent
societies such as ours, where
meat is a primary staple, we
need 2,000 gallons or more
per day just to feed one per-
son. Agriculture ties up about
half our water, mostly to grow
grains to feed animals. It
takes about 1,000 tons of
water to produce 1 ton of
grain. It is much cheaper to
import grain than it is to grow
it where water is scarce.
Many countries that are run-
ning low on water have be-
come grain importers so they
don't have to tie up precious
drinking water for agriculture.
Our country is still a grain-ex-
porting country but at a great
cost to our future generations.
Our water is subsidized, so
most big agro-giants don't pay
the real cost of water. Some
California large-scale farms
buy water at $5 per acre-foot;
the government estimates that
the real cost is more like $40
per acre-foot.
What isn't factored in is that
most of that water comes
from fossil aquifers under-

of our grain-producing states.
This aquifer is drawn down at
a rate of about 10 feet per
year and recharged at a rate of
1/2 inch per year. Two-fifths
of our feedlot cattle are fed
grain made of Ogallala water.
Amory Lovins, efficiency
guru from the Rocky Moun-
tain Institute, points out that
"growing that feedlot steer
consumed up to 100 pounds
of eroded topsoil and 8,000
pounds of ice age vintage
groundwater."
As water becomes the new
"gold standard" around the
world, we begin to see water
being used more efficiently.
In our country, water effi-
ciency is improving faster
than energy efficiency as mu-
nicipalities and farmers begin
to address shortages. Like en-
ergy efficiency, water effi-
ciency sees big gains when
we take simple steps. Just by
using drip irrigation and
sprinklers, we could save
enough water to meet the
needs of the expanding popu-
lation.
Here are a few success sto-
ries, courtesy of Amory and
Hunter Lovins, from their
book "Natural Capitalism":
—Palo Alto, Calif., saved 27
percent of its water use by
hiring college students to
teach high-usage homeowners
about ways to be more effi-
cient.
—South Africa's Kruger Na-
tional Park saved 74 percent
of its water and 52 percent of
its electricity by installing
meters, educating people and
finding other simple solu-
tions.
—Oregon farmers saved 10 to
15 percent of their water use,
thanks to a three-hour visit by
a water efficiency consultant.
"Like energy, it is much
cheaper to buy efficiency than
it is to buy water," Lovins
says.
Let's leave a little water for
the next generation by using
our water more wisely today.

Q: We are redoing the
kitchen in our 19th-century
brownstone. We took down
the wall between the kitchen and
breakfast room, but now we are
worried that we've spoiled the char-
acter of the old house. What kind
of cabinets and fixtures should we
put in to be true to the time period?
A: Restoring a vintage home au-

There's a rainbow of rewards at the

like New York designer Kathryn
Scott, whose design studio helped
the homeowners turn back the cal-
endar for the pictured handsome
brownstone.
Built in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., in
1864, the house boasted elegant
features like ornate plasterwork
ceilings. But it had been built to
serve family life as it was lived
nearly a century-and-a-half ago.
Today's lifestyle calls for open
spaces and easy communication
between them. So, the designer
joined the work and eating areas,
keeping the original fireplace and
plasterwork.
She designed the new space to look
like a library, Scott says, using age-
appropriate materials, such as wal-
nut cabinet fronts and restoration
glass (waves and bubbles) for the
sliding doors. The kitchen ceiling
had been dropped during an earlier
"updating," so she also brought in a
plaster master to recreate the ornate
overhead by copying the original
ceiling over the staircase.
Another way to make the new feel
old: Find hardware with an antique
finish. "Not lacquered," she insists.
"You want the finish to wear off
slowly,
just like the
real thing. Hardware should
change with time and take on a life
of its own."
The keyword is "character," Scott
says. "You don't want to be per-
fect." That is not always an easy
concept for her clients to accept,
the designer confides. "It often
takes agonizing on the clients part
before they can see that imperfec-
tions add character and are more
beautiful and interesting."

effects for older Americans.
The few games found to show
“modest benefits” to brain
function in the NIH study in-
clude those in the ongoing
USF study.
At USF, researchers are fol-
lowing 12 volunteers at a
time, for 12 weeks at a time.
Once an initial brain wave as-
sessment is done, participants
play cognitive fitness games
twice a week. The games from
Posit Science, with names like
“Bird Safari,” “Jewel Diver”
and “Road Tour,” involve a lot
of watching and remembering
where images flash on and off
the screen.
Participants like Bartley
know the lighthearted
games — part of software
packages called Insight, Brain
Fitness and DriveSmart —
have a serious purpose. And
while many think brain
games mostly target memory
and reasoning, the local re-
searchers actually are more
interested in assessing visual
processing speed and periph-
eral vision.
Those terms translate to
real-life application, USF’s
Edwards says. “Speed of pro-
cessing” for example, is sim-

This is the most triple digit days we have
seen in August since 1994 when we had 16
(we average 15 days per year for the entire
summer). The month has also been below
normal for rainfall – nearly an inch below
normal as of this writing.

Below is a model of what we can expect for

The Neighborhood Stabilization
Program (NSP) allows the City of
El Paso to purchase and rehabili-
tate foreclosed or abandoned prop-
erties, redevelop demolished or
vacant properties, and demolish
blighted structures.
The City of El Paso will purchase
tax foreclosed and mortgage fore-
closed properties in the areas de-
termined to be of greatest need,
including the Lower Dyer Neigh-
borhood Revitalization Strategy
Area, The Chamizal Neighbor-
hood Revitalization Strategy Area,
Segundo Barrio Neighborhood Re-
vitalization Area, East El Paso, and
Ysleta Neighborhood. If necessary,
structures on these properties will
be rehabilitated or demolished and
redeveloped according to Interna-
tional Building Code (IBC) Stan-
dards. These
properties/structures will be
used for activities that will pro-
vide housing to income-qualified
individuals/families at a dis-
count. Qualified individuals/fami-
lies must be at or below 120% of
Area Median Income (AMI) as de-
fined by HUD.
The City of El Paso will purchase
homes under the NSP, conduct in-
spections of the homes, and make
any needed repairs to the home.

woods
The biggest mistake I see ama-
teurs make with the fairway woods
is trying to hit up on the ball.
They’re worried about getting the
ball airborne, so they try to help it
by lifting up with their bodies.
Unfortunately, the result is just the
opposite, a topped shot.
You can break out of this vicious
cycle by trusting the loft of your fair-
way wood to do its job. Remember
the key: Hit down on your fairway
woods and take a divot!
The correct address position is
very important to good fairway
wood play, so here are some basics:

(To earn AVA status, at least 85 per-
cent of the grapes used to make a
wine must come from the region, and
there must also be evidence that the
growing conditions, such as the soil,
elevation and climate, are distinc-
tive.)
It’s just the biz is so new — most
are less than a decade old — that un-
less you’ve seen the billboards on In-
terstate 77 and other local highways
urging you to “Experience NC Wine
Country,” you might not know of it.
Almost two-dozen wineries and
vineyards are clustered in the Pied-
mont region’s Yadkin Valley alone, a
grape-loving 1,000 feet above sea
level, and like the fruit that’s picked
by hand each fall, they’re a diverse
bunch.
A few, such as Shelton Vineyards in
Dobson that recently opened a
33,000-square-foot facility and has a
restaurant on site, are large enough
that they offer guided tours on the
half-hour; opened to the public in
1985, the vineyard at the world-fa-
mous Biltmore Estate farther west in
Asheville draws more than 1 million
visitors annually.
Others have tasting rooms that mir-
ror the mass of varietals basking in
the hot Carolina sun outside their
doors. Raffaldini Vineyards off High-
way 421 in Ronda, known for its pinot
grigio, sangiovese and montepulciano
wines, is like a mini visit to Tuscany.
The two-story villa sits on 100 acres
planted with 750 rose bushes and fig
and olive trees, and there are also
balconies and a stone piazza with fan-
tastic views of the Blue Ridge Moun-
tains. Inside, visitors are treated to a
gallery of traditional Italian paint-
ings and sculptures.
The vast majority, though, are
small, boutique wineries like Round
Peak, which has just 13 planted acres
and produces between 1,200 and
1,500 cases of estate-bottled wine a
year — a drop in the bucket com-
pared to the Robert Mondavis, Gallos
and Beringers of the wine world.
Prices range from $12 for a 2004 mer-
lot or cabernet franc to $21 for a
blended cabernet sauvignon.
Old North State Winery & Brewery,
located in a renovated 1890s mercan-
tile building in Andy Griffith’s home-
town of Mount Airy, is a bit larger,
producing upward of 15,000 cases a
year. It’s also the rare urban winery.
Outfitted with a huge stone bar
crafted from local granite, though, it
has a warm, intimate feel that en-
courages lingering. Even better, it has
a great backstory.
Legend has it that a skeleton arm
— but no body — was found in the
basement when the structure was
renovated following a giant explosion
that blasted the storefront right off
the building. People also have heard
things that go bump in the night
when the building is empty, prompt-
ing the East Coast Paranormal Soci-
ety to come calling and co-owner Ben
Webb to put skeletons on its Restless
Soul merlot blend and Bare Bones
chardonnay.
“It’s known as the haunted winery,”
says tasting-room manager Liz
Blevins.

This great-grandma
is no pushover

At Martial Arts Advantage, where students
as young as 3 years old learn tae kwon do,
Alice Dingle is a standout in more ways than
one. The South Tampa resident who recently
earned a black belt is a 72-year-old great-
grandmother.
Long devoted to physical exercise, from aero-
bics and Pilates to free weights and golf, she
was introduced to tae kwon do two years ago
by one of her four sons.
“I did not know what it was all about, I did
not have clue,” she said of the Korean martial
art similar to karate, but also employing a wide
range of kicking moves.
Mark Dingle, 47, a tae kwon do black belt
student at South Tampa’s Martial Arts Advan-
tage, knew it well. And he knew the workout
was well suited for his active mother.
“Mom has more energy than all of us com-
bined,” Mark Dingle said recently after a tae
kwon do class that included his three children,
younger brother, Jimmy, and, of course, his
mother.
Owner-instructor Anthony Kuntz, a sixth-de-
gree black belt, said the martial arts school
provides a family-based program. “It’s more
than self defense and fitness training; it’s
about family bonding,” he said before leading
the 45-minute workout for three generations of
the Dingle family, and two dozen other stu-
dents.
“Alice is 72 year young, our oldest student
right now,” Kuntz said. “She took our compli-
mentary self-defense class and found she loved
it,” subsequently enrolling in women’s cardio
kickboxing and other classes focusing on calis-
thenics and improving strength and reflexes,
said Kuntz.
“Receiving her black belt is a big deal. Receiv-
ing her black belt at age 72 is extraordinary,”
said Kuntz, who opened Martial Arts Advan-
tage.
She is at Martial Arts Advantage five days a
week. “Now this is my workout all the time,”
she said, though she occasionally steals time
for Pilates or playing golf at the country club,
behind the home she shares with her husband,
Jerry.
“None of that could compare with this,” she
said of martial arts. “I haven’t gotten tired of it
yet. As long as I have good health I plan to stay
here.”

With her bigger-than-life voice and a personality to match,

Liza Minnelli never has been regarded as laid-back.

In a career that began with her Broadway debut at age 3 in 1949 and has
since seen her win an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, several Tony Awards
and a "worst actress" Razzie, she always has seemed like an indomitable
force of nature.

Whether making an indelible impression as the brassy star of the iconic

musical "Cabaret" in 1972 or during her recent cameo in this summer's
"Sex and the City 2" movie, which finds her belting out Beyonce's "Single
Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" with steamrollerlike intensity, Minnelli fills a
room, movie theater or concert hall as if it were her birthright.

And it may well be, considering that she is the daughter of two Hollywood
legends, singer-actress Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli
(of, respectively, "The Wizard of Oz" and "An American in Paris" fame).

But when it came time to record her new album,

"Confessions," Minnelli got as laid-back as any
singer could while still remaining fully con-
scious, albeit only partially upright.

"I made it in my bedroom!" chirped the vet-

eran singer and actress.

"I had to have knee replacement surgery, and

I go nuts with nothing to do because I have so
much energy," she continued, speaking from
New York. "So it was perfect. I did part of the
album before the operation and part of it after. I
started off singing in bed, and then, as I got better,
I moved into a director's chair. There was no other
way to do it because I couldn't walk."

Now 64, Minnelli shows no sign of slowing down soon,

despite the knee replacement (it was at least her third
knee operation), two earlier hip replacement surgeries,
three divorces and a number of drug- and alcohol-fueled
stays in various rehab clinics.

On "Confessions," which she recorded with veteran pi-

anist Billy Stritch, she sings in a far more intimate and un-
derstated style than is usually associated with her name.
Though some of the songs, such as "At Last" and "All the
Way," are weathered standards, many are obscurer, such
as "Moments Like This," "You Fascinate Me So" and the
finger-snapping Peggy Lee chestnut "He's a Tramp." At
their best, which is on about half of the 14 songs she per-
forms on the album, Minnelli and Stritch come close to
evoking Minnelli's longtime friend Tony Bennett's two
splendid releases with jazz piano great Bill Evans in
the mid-1970s.

"These songs are very personal and private to me,

and my singing on the album is not a performance,"
she said. "It's so personal that I had to be talked
into doing it," she said.

But the album, due out Sept.
28 on Decca Records, also
takes Minnelli back to her
childhood in Hollywood.
On many a night as she was
growing up, such American
music icons as Irving Berlin,
Oscar Levant and Ira Gersh-
win (her godfather) would
drop by to socialize. On
other nights, the Minnellis
would go visit Berlin, Gersh-
win and other pioneering
songwriters. Invariably, they
would take turns singing and
playing a few songs, while a
little girl named Liza would
sprawl under the grand piano
and listen intently.
"To me, they were the neigh-
bors," she recalled of her
family's famous friends.
"Our home was like a coal
mine in town, and everybody
knew everybody who
worked in the mines. The
songs on my new album are
the songs I heard sitting
under pianos all over Holly-
wood."
In 1964, when she was still a
teenager, Minnelli famously
recorded a live album in
London with her mother,
who would die five years
later of an accidental drug
overdose at the age of 47.
Yet even though she now
pointedly credits all of her
musical acumen to her god-
mother, Kay Thompson,
Minnelli allows that appear-
ing onstage with her mother
in London was a major turn-
ing point for both of them.
"I was scared to death, but I
was determined," she re-
called. "I asked my mom,
'Why don't you do this with
Frank Sinatra or Peggy Lee?'
She said, 'No, I want you.'
And I thought, 'Oh, my
God!'"
In 1967, Minnelli co-starred
opposite Albert Finney in
"Charlie Bubbles." It was her
first movie since 1949, when
she briefly appeared in a
scene with her mother at the
conclusion of "In the Good
Old Summertime," and it
marked the launch of a
lengthy film career. Today
she credits her many roles on
Broadway and the inspira-
tion of French singing insti-
tution Charles Aznavour for
forming her actorlike ap-
proach to interpreting the
lyrics she performs onstage.
"I always loved music," she
said. "But I didn't really get
into it until I saw Charles
perform, and he influenced
me. How? It was the acting,
how he could take you to dif-
ferent places when he sang;
it was like God (was) acting.
I asked him if he would be
my mentor, and he said yes.
But I know so much music
because I was a shy little girl
and the songs said what I
couldn't say.
"If you are singing 20 songs
in concert, each song has to
have a character breakdown.
Who is this woman (in the
song)? What does she look
like? Where is she? The
country? The top floor of a
penthouse? It's almost like I
am the character, so each
song is different. But none of
that is happening on my new
album — which is me just
sitting there singing."
Though Minnelli has long
been a Broadway favorite,
her fans also include rock
singer Pat Benatar, Crowded
House band leader Neil Finn
and the members of Queen,
Pet Shop Boys and My
Chemical Romance, all three
of whom she has collabo-
rated with.
Asked whether she or the all-
male members of the guy-
liner-fueled My Chemical
Romance wore more makeup
in the recording studio, she
laughed with delight.
"I don't know who had more
on, but we were sure wearing
a lot!" said Minnelli, who,
for a short period in the
1980s, was managed by Kiss
bassist-singer Gene Sim-
mons.
Through all her ups and
downs — and there have
been many of both — she
has charged (or sometimes
limped) forward, determined
to do her best whatever the
circumstances. Though her
reputation as a diva is not
undeserved, she maintains
that "it's easier to treat peo-
ple nicely."
Ultimately, Minnelli said,
"when people remember me,
I want them to say, 'She did a
good job.'"

IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME
The biggest mistake I see amateurs make
with the fairway woods is trying to hit up
on the ball. They’re worried about getting
the ball airborne, so they try to help it by
lifting up with their bodies. Unfortunately,
the result is just the opposite, a topped shot.
You can break out of this vicious cycle by
trusting the loft of your fairway wood to do
its job. Remember the key: Hit down on
your fairway woods and take a divot!
The correct address position is very im-
portant to good fairway wood play, so here
are some basics:
At address, the ball is played off the

claiming a shoulder injury.
Daly must be close to the
record for No Cards — the of-
ficial designation when a play-

According to The Wall
Street Journal: “Daly also
pulled out of
last year’s event due to a
back injury. Since 2005, he’s
withdrawn from 18 PGA
Tour events. Daly withdrew
from two other events this
season — the Zurich Classic
of New Orleans and Valero
Texas Open — again citing
injuries.”
At the demanding venue on

Daly shot 76 in the first round
and was five more over in
seven holes after the fog delay

Of course a player may
withdraw if he is injured, but
in a larger context, is there
anything that could discourage
a player from starting a tourna-
ment then withdrawing, using
injury as an excuse? This is
not ethical because players
on the waiting lists for these
tournaments must travel to
the site in case somebody
withdraws before the tourna-
ment begins. Once a golfer
tees off, no one can fill his
spot.
In my opinion, there
should be a rule that if a
player withdraws 50 percent
more than the tour average in
one year, he is suspended the
next year.

Making of a bone-
headed mistake
The idea of a major, such as the U.S. Open or
the Masters, is to place extra demands on golfers
so they can’t survive simply by being able to
swing the club. Majors are stiff exams that test
your entire tool kit — your mental, emotional
and physical stamina, as
well as your swing skill.
The problem golf poses is to
move the ball from point A to
point B in the fewest strokes.
But the solution increases in
complexity when the
circumstances demand that the
player not only make correct
golf swings, but also perform
under increasing levels of
stress. And effortless swings on
Thursday can become mission impossible on
Sunday afternoon.
How is this extra dose of stress
created?
Here are some of the ways:
1. Designate the competition as meaningful
— a professional major, the amateur club cham-
pionship, etc. — all with high rewards for win-
ning.
2. Create rules, the deviation from which elic-
its severe sanctions.
3. Make the playing field hard to negotiate —
the more taxing, the better.
4. Expose the players to the elements such as
wind, rain, etc., the capriciousness of which adds
uncertainty.
5. Pit the player against an un-
seen enemy — an insurgency
called “the field.”
6. Make sure the player is compet-
ing on foreign territory by using a
faraway location that requires ex-
hausting travel, complicated logistics
and separation from loved ones.
7. Change the battlefield every
day.
8. Make sure the news of the play-
er’s failures are immediately broad-
cast back home through heralds like CBS and
The New York Times.
This combination of increasing complexity
plus increasing stress lowers the player’s control
of the situation, and with reduced control comes
increased stress, creating a vicious cycle. The
end result is a bonehead mistake such as Jean
Van de Velde made at the Open in 1999 or
Dustin Johnson made when he grounded his club
in a hazard at this year’s PGA Championship.

NASCAR driver please stand up?’
ometimes, when watching how
S NASCAR drivers react off the
track compared to how they
behave behind the wheel, the old
TV game show “To Tell the Truth”
comes to mind.
At the end of the game show,
where a celebrity panel tries to de-
cide which of the three people be-
fore them is the central character
and which two are impostors, the
host asks: “Will the real (the central
character’s name) please stand up?”
Jeff Gordon, who usually is as
pleasant and professional as can be
outside the car, is at times a tiger
behind the wheel.
So which is the real Jeff Gordon?
Here’s what he had to say about
the differences in drivers off the
track and on.
“I always like to think that on the
race track that’s kind of your alter
ego,” he said, adding that the envi-
ronment on the track affects behav-
ior. “When you put the intensity

level, is to me equally as intense as
it’s ever been.”
He said that it’s not just race
drivers who get put in situations
where a different side of their per-
sonality comes out.
“If you’re in a calm, controlled en-
vironment, then your emotions and
your personality is going to reflect
on that,” he said. “You go into a
highly intense environment with a
lot of pressure, a competitive in-
tense environment, it’s going to af-
fect your personality and how you
react to things.”
But Gordon said the bottom line
answer is that the person behind
the wheel is closer to who a driver
really is.
“I think you really find out truly
who you are in those moments,
probably more so than you do out-
side the race car in a more con-
trolled environment,” he said.

Infiniti EX35 – combining sport and style in a compact luxury SUV.
A few years ago when we saw
gas prices go crazy, big SUVs
were at their prime. But with
the high cost of fuel, sales of
those big SUVs - especially
luxury SUVs dwindled – cre-
ating a new frontier of vehi-
cles: the small luxury
crossover SUV. Logically
speaking, these upscale
crossover vehicles make little
sense – they are small, expen-
sive, not that much more fuel
efficient than their larger
counterparts, and in most
cases, light on utility. Despite
that, there are some that stand
out among the rest and one of
those is the EX35 by Infiniti.
The Infiniti EX35 is based off
of the popular Infiniti G37
sedan – using the popular FM
platform and sharing many of
its proportions. With just a
two-plus inch increase in
wheelbase, one may consider
the EX a G37 wagon. But we
know how the public feels
about station wagons. And if
you recall, Infiniti has two
other SUVs in their lineup –
the large, gas-gulping QX56
and the mid-size FX45/FX35.
So the smaller EX35 rounds
out the SUV lineup nicely.
In fact in profile, the EX
looks a lot like the FX with its
arching, coupelike roofline,
long hood and rearward
cabin. Measuring in at 182
inches, the EX is about the
same size as an Acura RDX,
but sits about three inches
lower.
Inside the EX is a snug, cozy
cabin – a result of the low
roofline. But the interior is
impressive with a distinctive
dash that flows around the
driver in soft waves. Even
the dash in front of the pas-
senger is pleated, adding to
the sense of a warm and invit-
ing environment.
For the driver, things are just
about perfect, with an excel-
lent driving position and a
perfectly sized steering wheel.
The front passenger also has
it good, with a comfortable
power seat and plenty of
room. The back seat is less
impressive. Legroom is
scarce, and getting in and out
can be tricky, especially in
tight parking lots. Hate to say
it, but the back seat is best left
for kids – and I’m not talking
about the third row (there is
none). One nice thing about

Racing also has a way of affecting relationships be-

tween drivers. People who might otherwise find lots in
common and get along well end up with strained rela-
tions because of situations that occur on the track.
Kevin Harvick said that’s true of him and Carl Ed-
wards, a driver he’s had a run-in or two with over the
years.
“Sometimes I just think people don’t see eye-to-eye
on things,” he said. “I enjoy racing on the race track
with Carl (Edwards) and that is all that matters.
“It doesn’t really matter if he likes me or if I like
him, and I think we both race each other, and off the
race track doesn’t really matter as long as on the race
track we race hard and enjoy racing with each other.”
Edwards, who has had several on-track incidents
with Brad Keselowski this season including intention-
ally wrecking him two times, also talked about the dif-
ferences in the way a driver acts inside and outside
his race car.
Interestingly, the in-car side of the usually affable
Edwards seemed to come out when asked to discuss
the subject.
“It’s really simple,” he said. “I treat everyone the
way they treat me. I’m not going to let somebody take
advantage of me. That’s all there is to it. I don’t think
I’ve ever gone out and been the aggressor of a situa-
tion or a bully or anything like that, but I’m not going
to let somebody take advantage of me …
“The people who know me and know what I’m
about, it makes pretty good sense to them, but, for
some reason, I guess some people don’t like that or
don’t understand it.”
