TEAM/ CONFERENCE OUTLOOK

What are your overall expectations and challenges for
your team this upcoming season?
We are expecting to compete on both side of the ball this year, we want to
be physical and run the ball offensively and stop the run defensively. We
return a lot of experience and are plugging junior varsity players that have
won for the last 2 years at that level. The kids spent a great deal of time in
the weight room over the off-season and we’re hoping the added strength
combined with our experience leads to improvement. Numbers will be a
challenge, we’ve got 30 kids out for football this year. With the lack of
numbers comes a lack of depth, so staying injury free will be a key to any
success we have this year.
Please give us a breakdown of what we can expect on
offense, including top players and their 2012 stats:
We’re going to run the ball and be physical. We really want to get the ball
in the hands of our athletes and let the line do their jobs. The offense will
rely heavily on Isaac Sexe who had 217 yards rushing and 130 yards
receiving before going down with a season ending injury in game #4 last
year. He’ll be joined in the backfield by Josh Nitek, who is converting
from QB to a fullback/wingback. Josh is our leading returning rusher with
368 yards. Others that will fill back field roles will be Ashton Schultz,
219 yards rushing last year and Bryant Berg who had 109 yards rushing
last year. Conner Brekke and Deven Lien will be competing to fill the
starting quarterback position. We are going to rely heavily on an offensive
line that returns 3 of 5 starters and also some kids that got spot starts last
year. Zach Waldera will lead the line from his center position along with
senior Hunter Dykstra.
What do you expect from the conference this season?
Top teams, players, storylines?
I expect a conference that is pretty wide open. Last year we had 2 very
senior dominated teams tie for the conference title, with Mel-Min and
C+FC finishing 3rd and 4th, both of those teams return a lot of skill kids.
Eleva-Strum returns a lot of kids as well and is plugging in kids from the
conference’s best jv team. Top players will be Quinn Olson RB and
Bennett Moen lineman from ES, along with Eric Christopherson
(RB/LB), Sam Boone (QB), and Aaron Scafe (WR/DB) all from M-M,
Alex Grulkowski (QB/DB) and Justin Gierok (lineman) from
Indee/Gilmanton, Whitehall’s QB Payton Slaby, C-FC’s quarterback
Tristan Schmidknecht, Dylan Wolf (RB/LB), and Devin Zonick-
Greenwald (TE).
The big story to me will be how the conference shapes up after the senior
dominated teams won the conference last year and also the quality of
quarterback play in the league is as strong as I’ve seen it, particularly
Slaby from Whitehall, Boone from M-M, and Schmidtknect from C-FC.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find any better prep QB’s than those three
guys.
Is there anything about your team or its players that
would make for an interesting feature story?
Nothing at this point----sorry. We have a few stand out
players that are coming back from season ending injuries
last year.
 Please give us a breakdown of what we can expect on Do you have any alumni currently competing in
defense, including top players and their 2012 stats: college? If so, where?
We are moving back to our 4-4 defense that we have run in the past, last
year we ran a combination of the 4-4 and a 3-4. We’re expecting to be a We have Hank and Reggie Kujak Garrett Eide at UW-Stout
much improved unit as we return 8 starters from last year. The defense
will be anchored by a strong linebacking corps that include junior Josh
Nitek (47 tackles), senior Ashton Schultz (47 tackles), junior Austin
Elvaker (45 tackles), and senior Isaac Sexe (injured last year). We return a
load of experience in the defensive backfield including 3 year starters
Conner Brekke and Thomas Dunlavy. The defensive line will be deep
with several players that received playing time at the varsity level last
year.
