Technical Description

Harmony: NTCF2x battery replacements

Products Concerned: NTCF21/22/23

Description: The NTCF2x series of fiber optic loop termination units requires an on-board
battery and also supports an auxiliary external battery connection. One on-board battery is
provided with the original purchase of the termination unit.

Replacement batteries and the optional auxiliary external backup battery are not provided by
ABB. These batteries can be purchased directly from appropriate battery vendors. The battery
specifications are provided below to assist with this purchase.
Table 1: Battery specifications:
Chemistry Lead-acid ( PbCa elements, gel electrolyte )
Capacity ( (C/10, 25 degrees C ) 3 Ah
Temperature 0 to 50 C ( 32 to 122 F ) operating
-20 to 50 C ( -4 to 122 F ) storage
Dimensions 34x135x65 mm
Connectors FASTON, 4.8 mm
End of charge voltage versus 6.90 V at 20 C ( 68 F )
temperature ( +/- 90mV )
6.6 V at 50 C ( 122 F )
7.25 V at 0 C ( 32 F )
Battery lasting time NTCF21: 5 hours, begin of life ( new battery ), 25 C ( 77 F )
NTCF22: 7 hours, begin of life ( new battery ), 25 C ( 77 F )
NTCF23: 6 hours, begin of life ( new battery ), 25 C ( 77 F )
Recovery time 24 hours
Expected life in backup use Estimated 5 years at 25 C ( 77 F ) ( end of life is defined as
the time when the capacity is reduced to ½ of the Begin Of
Life value ). This parameter is very difficult to measure and
to estimate; even the battery vendors, often, do not speak
about it.
Auxiliary battery ( external, options ) 6V, 10 Ah max. Allowed only if ambient temperature
remains between 15 and 30 C ( 86 F ). The temperature
compensation cannot work because the temp. sensor
remains attached to the onboard battery container.
6V, moe thatn 10 Ah if recharged by a third-party external
charger and connect to NTCF through a diode. No
temperature limitation in this case ( full 0-50C range )
provided that the charger is temperature compensated.

Again, these batteries should be obtainable from a reputable local battery vendor. Table 2 lists a few
vendors and their part numbers for the onboard battery replacement.. These are not the only batteries
that meet the specifications. Rather, these provide some examples of models that are/were available for
guidance on purchasing a new battery.
