ABOUT BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY
Bharathidasan University was named after the revolutionary legend Tamil poet
Bharathidasan and it was established in February 1982. Motto of the University is, “we will
create a brave world” which was Bharathidasan’s poetic words. It aimed to create a brave
new world with innovative changes in academics. The main campus of the university is
situated in palkalaiperur with a vast area of over 600 acres and Khajamalai campus is situated
with 52.56 acres. The current Vice Chancellor of the university is Dr. V.M.Muthukumar. The
university is an integrated campus available with many academic departments and the
students are provided with excellent facilities. Under the jurisdiction of the university, there
are 143 colleges, located in 8 districts namely Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Karur,
Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam are affiliated and over 3 lakhs
students are undergoing various Certificate, Diploma, Graduation programmes in Arts /
Science / Commerce / Management disciplines. This was the first University to introduce
B.SC Computer Science during 1985 and MCA in 1990 onwards.
SCHOOL OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP (SSDE)

Bharathidasan University is the first University in India to have a School of Skill
Development and Entrepreneurship (SSDE) under the Faculty of Arts for imparting
Vocational Education at higher education. Under SSDE three different wings are functioning
namely Institute for Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), DDU
KAUSHAL (Deen Dayal Upadhyay - Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled
Human Abilities and Livelihood) Centre and Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill
Development (CESD). IECD is a self supporting institution of Bharathidasan University,
which offering over 100 Skill Development programs in 10 sectors for different target group.
UGC’s DDU KAUSHAL Centre has been established and offering B.Voc. Degree
Programmes, M.Voc. Degree Programmes and PhD programmes in the area of Vocational
education and Skill Development. Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development is
focusing to impart Entrepreneurial skills for self sustainability and employability.
The school has been established by Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli during October
2015.Prof.K.Parthasarathy, Director of IECD has been appointed as chair for its SSDE. The
academic structure of the SSDE follows.

About IECD
Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) was established by the
University under the directorship of Dr. K. Parthasarathy, Founder Director and Senior
Professor of the University. The aim of IECD is to eliminate unemployment, through 124
skill development programmes offered in the field of electronics, IT, hardware, education/
skill development, beauty and wellness, health care, tourism, hospitality and travel
management, transportation and logistics, media and entertainment, auto components and
entrepreneurship training especially to the youth, senior citizen and housewives. IECD has

tie-up with 45 industries for operating the placement and vocational training. Every academic
year IECD update all the syllabi of corresponding courses. IECD extended its support to
Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education in introducing 41 skill based electives to
Under Graduate students of colleges in Tamil Nadu by providing skill development
curriculum under the choice based credit system. Another important scheme called School-
University- Industry- Tie-Up-Scheme (SUITS), wherein the students from 5th to 9th standard
are trained on Information Technology which includes computer operations, office
automation, programming techniques, C programming, and C++ programming, Graphic
Design, Web design and 2D Animation. In the past decade 3.57 Lakhs candidate have been
trained through vocational and Skill Development programmes offered by IECD and issued
university certificate to all the candidates who have completed their respective courses
successfully for the past 13 years.
DDU KAUSHAL CENTRE AT BHARATHIDASAN UNIVERSITY

University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi had provided grant-in-aid of Rs.
3.50 Crores for establishment of DDU KAUSHAL Centre (Deen Dayal Upadhyay -
Knowledge Acquisition and Upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood) at
IECD, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli during XIIth Plan period for the proposal
submitted by Prof. K. Parthasarathy, Director of IECD, as well as the Principal Investigator
of the DDU-KAUSHAL Centre at Bharathidasan University. The university is the only State
University in Tamil Nadu which has obtained the DDU-KAUSHAL Centre from the UGC.
Totally 40 Centers have been provided with DDU KAUSHAL Centre. DDU-KAUSHAL
Kendra is offering B.Voc Degree Programmes in three different trade roles namely 1.
Automobile Technology 2. Logistics and Supply Chain Management. 3. Trouble Shooting
and Maintenance of Electrical and Electronics Equipments from the academic year 2015-
2016 onwards.
APPROVAL OF THE DDU-KAUSHAL PROPOSAL

After submission of the proposal, UGC approved the proposal through Ref. No 3-
11/2015 (KAUSHAL) dated 14th August, 2016, it stated that IECD got approval for starting
vocational courses under the scheme of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra and
subsequent interface with the Expert Committee in the office of the UGC. The programmes
approved are B. Voc, M.Voc & Ph.D in 1. Automobile Technology 2. Logistics and Supply
Chain Management 3. Trouble Shooting and Maintenance of Electrical and Electronics

Equipments. Further, UGC has also approved a grant of Rs. 3.50 Cr. (Rs. Three Crore and

RELEASING OF 1st INSTALLMENT GRANT

UGC has approved a grant of Rs. 3.50 Cr. (Rs. Three Crore and Fifty Lakhs only)
under this scheme for a period of two years (2015-2016 & 2016-2017). The 1st Installment
Grant of Rs. 2.10 crores was released from the allocated budget under DDU-KAUSHAL
centre at IECD for the financial year 2015 – 2016.
CONSTITUTION OF ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Advisory committee has been constituted as per the UGC’s guidelines for DDU
KAUSHAL Centre under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor of Bharathidasan
University. The committee has power to review the status of the scheme, to recommend,
suggest and give administrative approval required for implementing the scheme
systematically.

The committee met few occasions for procurement of equipments, materials and
printings. The committee also met for working out the tender and tender were floated for
the purchase of lab equipments for all the three trade different B.Voc Degree
Programmes.
RECRUITMENT OF CONTRACT STAFF
Advertisement for the appointment of staff on contractual basis was floated in the national
Newspaper on 3rd Feb 2016.Staff on contractual basis (up to March 31st, 2017) underwent
panel interview for selection and appointment for the DDU KAUSHAL Program. 5 Staff (3-
Assistant Professor, 1-Technical Assistant,1-Multi-Tasking Staff) joined the DDU
KAUSHAL centre on1st , July 2016.The guest faculty for all the three trade roles were
identified and selected for teaching the B.Voc Degree Programmes. In addition, Visiting
Faculties/Industry Experts were also engaged for teaching specialized subject areas.

EVALUATION PATTERN
The components for Continuous Internal Assessment (CIA) are:

The evaluation process was carried out by IECD, Bharathidasan University, since it has a
track record of assessment of skill Development/Vocational Education programmes for the
past one decade for over 100 programmes.
Once the marks of the CIA and end-semester examinations for each of the courses are
available, they will be added. The passing minimum for CIA shall be 40 out of 25 marks (i.e.
10 marks). Failed candidates in the Internal Assessment are permitted to improve their
Internal Assessment marks in the subsequent semesters (2 chances will be given) by writing
test and by submitting Assignments. The passing minimum for University Examinations shall
be 40% out of 75 marks (i.e. 30 marks).

EXAMINATION AND RESULTS
Among 84 students enrolled in B.Voc. Programmes, 3 students from Trouble shooting

and Maintenance of Electrical and Electronic Equipments and 6 from Automobile
Technology and 11 from Logistics and Supply Chain Management were dropout. The end
semester results of the students were calculated from summing their internal marks (25 marks
= 5 marks for assignment, 10 marks from test I and II) and main examination marks (75
Marks). The details of Student’s Enrollment, Dropouts and Passed Outs Details are shown in
the below table 6 and 7.

INTERNSHIP AND INDUSTRIAL VISITS

Industrial visit has its own importance in a career of a student who is pursuing a degree.
Objectives of industrial visit are to provide students an insight regarding internal working of
companies. With an aim to go beyond academics, industrial visit provides student a practical
perspective on the world of work. It provides students with an opportunity to learn practically
through interaction, working methods and employment practices. It gives them exposure to
current work practices as opposed to possibly theoretical knowledge being taught
at University.

INDUSTRIAL VISITS
B.voc Programme in DDU – KAUSHAL centre is aimed to produce skilled oriented

graduates. Hence, the centre has arranged Industrial Visits to students who are undergoing the
course in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
During the academic year 2015-17, the Certificate and Diploma Level students in Logistics
and Supply Chain Management has visited following industry in Tiruchirappalli.
CENTRAL WAREHOUSE CORPORATION AND STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA

WAREHOUSE
In this academic year 2016-2017, the certificate level students of Logistics and Supply Chain
Management has visited the logistics department of SAIL (STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA
LIMITED - A MAHRATNA COMPANY) in Tiruchirappalli, to get enriched on the various
supply process involved in the chain management of PROUCTION TO RETAILER. They
have also visited the Agricultural Warehouse of CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
WAREHOUSE OF TIRUCHIRAPPALLI located in KK Nagar, Tiruchirappalli

DALMIA CEMENT BHARAT LIMITED, DALMIYAPURAM
B.Voc. Logistics and Supply Chain Management First year students went for an
industrial visit to Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited located in Dalmiyapuram, Lalgudi Taluk,
Tiruchirappalli organized by DDU-KAUSHAL centre at IECD, Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli on 11th March, 2017. In our visit we have interacted and discussed with Mr.
Paulraj, HR Manager and training coordinator, (RTC) Regional Training Centre of Dalmia
cements. We went through various departments, technical and non-technical, and have
collected detailed information on their respective functions and their impact on the outcomes
of the company.

We went to Regional Training Centre(RTC), Time office of Dalmia at the entrance,

clinker, Weigh Bridge, cement powder storage and silos, packing plant, warehouse and
logistics center. In our industrial visit we have understood the way the company keeps track
of the in time and out time of their employees. We also observed the different shifts the
company follows and their respective timings. We have also learned that they are responsible

for maintaining health and safety of employees, their recruitment and training for increasing
their potential and safety. Environmental safety also comes under their supervision.

They coordinate with all other departments and have a detailed record of production
parameters, number of workers, work completion, pay sheet by personnel. 760 regular basis
employees and 890 contract labours are serving for DCBL.
PREPARATION OF STUDY MATERIALS

The lesson writers, subject experts of subject validity and language experts for English
language correction were identified and under their supervision the preparation of study
materials for three B.Voc degree programmes got completed. All the Books were distributed
to the benefit of the students for preparation of their examinations.

BRIEF PROFILE OF PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR AND DIRECTOR

Dr.K. Parthasarathy is serving as Chair-School of Skill Development
& Entrepreneurship and Professor & Director, Institute for
Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) and DDU-
KAUSHAL Centre, Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu. His
wider contributions to the fields of Lifelong Education,
Entrepreneurship and Skill Development remain as hallmarks in his
career spread over in three decades. His academic contributions
speak much about him. Under his research supervision 17 Ph.Ds., 10
M.Phils., and 30 Master Degrees were awarded. He has completed 23 research projects, and
being operating 2 major projects, worth of 4.25 crores of rupees funded by different national
and international agencies, published 70 books/reports, 73 papers and presented 175 papers in
national and international seminars / conferences. He has visited Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and United Kingdom on various academic
assignments. He has served the University in different capacities as full additional charges
viz., NSS Programme Co-ordinator, Cultural Co-ordinator, Youth Red Cross Zonal Co-
ordinator, Campus Diversity Initiative Co-ordinator, Placement Officer, Extension Co-
ordinator and has laid deep foundations and strengthened the extension activities at college
and university levels. He has membership in 17 International/National level bodies and he has
organized over 2500 Seminars / Trainings / Conferences /Camps / Workshops / Orientations
in the field of Lifelong Learning, Entrepreneurship and Skill Development and Human
Resources Development for the past 30 years.
His vision and conceptualization of an autonomous self-supporting IECD at
Bharathidasan University during 2004 could not only generate over 18 crores of rupees
through conceiving and offering 124 skill based programmes tie-up with 42
industries/institutions in Tamil Nadu, but could show the life to over 3 lakhs persons
belonging to downtrodden sections of the community. He has moulded the Institute as
Excellence in Entrepreneurship and Skill Development. He is poineer in establising a

separate School of Skill Development and Enterpreneurship at Bharathidasan University,
which is first of its kind in Indian Higher Education.
Further, he held different positions as Dean, Faculty of Arts and Chairperson, School
of Education, Member of the Syndicate, Finance Committee, Senate and Academic Council.
He also served in various committees as Member of National Level Expert Committee of
UGCs Continuing Education/Lifelong Learning, CAPART, Cultural Affairs (MHRD),
Association of Indian Universities and Vocational / Continuing Education (MHRD). He also
served twenty Indian Universities as Member in the Academic Councils/Examination
