Chapter I

I. Introduction

Technology improves as times goes by, and looking back at the past, the people

have greatly evolved to a new era of Social Media users. With the advancement of

technologies as an aid for the 21st century generation, it has affected the performance of

the students from the higher education.

Social Technology has been a tool for communication with other people, a channel

for information to be traded or a device to gather and expand the knowledge. According

to a famous quote from the movie Spider Man, “Great power comes with great

responsibility”. The possibility of the impact in the student’s academic performance differs

from each user with their personal intent.

With the Internet enabling the millennials to easily access social medias, it brought

them a way to casually to hold a conversation with other people especially for introverts.

It has also improved the interaction of students to the teachers, and the students to co-

students in the classroom.

Therefore, the researcher has decided to come up a study on the Impact of Social

Technologies to student’s academic performance to further investigate and have a deeper

understanding of its relative effects.

II. Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the commonly used social media platforms of students.

2. To realize the reason students, grow fond of social technologies.

3. To determine the effects of social technology on students’ academic performance.

III. Statement of the Problem

1. What are the most commonly used social media platforms of students?

2. Why do students grow fond of social technologies?

3. How does social technology affect the students’ academic performance?

This chapter presents a discussion of the research design, population and

sampling, the research instrument, the data-gathering procedures, and the analysis and

interpretation of data.

Research Approach/ Design

This study will use the qualitative approach since the main aim of the researcher

is to describe the “actual effects” of the phenomenon. As this is a qualitative analysis of

narrative data, methods to analyze its data must be quite different from more traditional

or quantitative methods of research

Qualitative research will be used as an approach since it is primarily an exploratory

research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and

motivations. It provides insights in the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses

for potential quantitative research.

In addition, the researcher will use the purposive sampling since in the qualitative

study since it is a non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study. Purpose sampling is also known as judgmental,

selective, or subjective sampling, thus participants should have experience with the same

Research Methodology


This qualitative study will involve the participation of Grade 11 and 12 students in

Cavite School of Life located at the Senior High School Building in Bacoor Campus There

are (5) participants in the Grade 11 level in and (5) participants in the Grade 12 level.

Mainly the selected grade levels are indulged to use social technologies as a mean

to gather and explain information especially in the 21st century in order to be updated and

informed of the circulating data.

Instrument of the Study

The data collection tools that will be used are interviews, or written self-reports.

A semi-structured interview, a qualitative method of inquiry that combines a

predetermined set of open questions (questions that prompt discussion) will be used by

the researcher with the opportunity to explore particular themes or responses further.
