WARNING
Personnel performing operations, procedures, and practices which are included or implied in this
technical manual shall observe the following warnings. To disregard these warnings and precautionary
information can cause serious injury, death, or an aborted mission.
WARNING
FSCAP
This technical manual contains procedures for identifying critical characteristics of FSCAP. Critical
characteristics may be identified as dimensions, tolerances, finishes, materials, assembly, or inspection
procedures. Some processes may require qualified sources. FSCAP indicating a maximum allowable
limit shall not be continued in use when limits have been exceeded. These parts must be replaced.
WARNING
AC POWER
Before applying ac power to the helicopter, make sure that the area around the stabilator is clear of
personnel and equipment. Should the stabilator be in any position other than trailing edge fully down,
it may reposition automatically to fully down when ac power is applied.
WARNING
AVIATION FUEL
Pending the release of more detailed guidance on acceptable occupational exposure limits, personnel
involved in the handling of aviation turbine fuels are to adhere to the following general practices when
exposure to fuel or fuel vapours is likely:
a. Avoid skin contact with fuels and observe good personal hygiene, in particular prior to eating,
drinking, or smoking.
b. Be familiar with basic safety and handling requirements for aviation fuels and other
flammable/explosive materials, including:
Change 5 a

TM 1-70-23
c. If contamination occurs, clothing is to be changed as soon as possible. Clothing wet with fuel
should be soaked with water prior to removal to prevent the possibility of ignition by
electro-static discharge. Contaminated clothing should be laundered separatley prior to reuse.
WARNING
Beryllium copper and beryllium oxide can be serious health hazards. Dust created by breakage of
beryllium copper/oxide is a serious toxic hazard, and if involved in fire, gives off large amounts of
toxic fumes. Inhaled beryllium materials affect lungs, causing chronic beryllium disease, which is
incurable, progressive, and fatal. Beryllium materials absorbed into body tissues, mouth, skin, or
wound, cause the formation of tumors. Keep beryllium copper/oxide out of open wounds. Deliberate
abrasion of beryllium materials must not be attempted in any circumstance. Use PPE specified while
handling parts containing beryllium copper or beryllium oxide. Clean up visible dust piles and wash
hands and arms after maintenance.
WARNING
CARBON MONOXIDE
During cold weather operations when preheating is necessary, all personnel shall become acquainted
with the various types of heaters and where they are to be used. Be careful of accumulations of carbon
monoxide and damage to heat-sensitive equipment.
WARNING
Chemical film materials are strongly oxidizing and are a fire hazard when in contact with organic
materials such as paint thinners. Do not store or mix surface treatment materials in containers previ-
ously containing flammable products. Rags contaminated with chemical film materials should be
thoroughly rinsed and disposed of as soon as practicable.
b Change 5

TM 1-70-23
WARNING
CONSUMABLE MATERIALS
Observe all cautions and warnings on the containers when using consumables. When applicable wear
necessary protective gear during handling and use. If a consumable is flammable or explosive, MAKE
SURE consumable and its vapors are kept away from heat, spark, and flame. MAKE SURE helicopter
is properly grounded and firefighting equipment is readily available for use.
WARNING
HIGH VOLTAGE
There are dangerous voltages in the helicopter. Use extreme care when working with equipment having
these voltages.
WARNING
HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS
There are dangerous high hydraulic system pressures in the helicopter. Use extreme care when working
on systems having this pressure.
WARNING
When fire extinguishers are used in a confined area, ventilate immediately. Serious injury or death
could result if the area is not ventilated or the user does not use a self-contained breathing device.
WARNING
When opening and closing main pylon sliding cover, keep hands away from sharp edges near track,
mating end, and especially ventilation blower inlet hole.

WARNING
NOISE
Sound pressure levels in and around this helicopter during some operating conditions exceed the
surgeon generals hearing conservation criteria, as defined in DA PAM 40-501. Hearing protection
devices are required to be worn by all personnel in and around the helicopter during operation of main
engine and/or auxiliary power unit (APU).
CAUTION
Do not operate the rotor system while the main rotor pylon sliding cover is in the open position. Main
rotor blades could contact the main rotor pylon sliding cover. If rotor system operation is required
when the main rotor pylon sliding cover is open, remove main rotor pylon sliding cover.
CAUTION
Damage to main rotor servo piston rods seal will occur if piston rods come in contact with
contaminates during maintenance procedures. Contaminated main rotor servo piston rods will cause
seal damage during use causing excessive leakage past seals. Cover up main rotor servos prior to
maintenance work to keep area clean.
CAUTION
Damage can occur if limits noted on engine cowlings are exceeded. Maximum weight, engine cowlings
can support including equipment, is 400 pounds. No more than two people are permitted on engine
cowling at any one time, with no one person weighing over 250 pounds. Do not apply load to vertical
surface.

NOTE
The following two lists contain Alert Service Bulletins (ASB) and Customer Service Notices (CSN)
that indicate if and when an ASB or CSN is incorporated into the manuals. If data contained in an
ASB or CSN has been incorporated into the manuals, the word YES will appear in the
INCORPORATED column. If ASB or CSN does not effect the manual (for example a one-time
inspection), the words NO EFFECT will appear. If data in an ASB or CSN has not been
incorporated into the manual, no entry will appear in the INCORPORATED column.
This ASB/CSN list applies to all operators of Sikorsky S70 Foreign Military Sales and Commercial
helicopters. This list is generic and is not specific to any one helicopter model.
This list contains ASB/CSN’s that apply to the entire series of manuals used to operate,
troubleshoot, and maintain Sikorsky S70 Foreign Military Sales and Commercial helicopters.
