Reading Comprehension Strategies: This week we will take our
third cold reading assessment. Overall our class is improving each time we
take a new test. Some parents are wondering why their student can read
fluently but have difficulty on these tests. When students take reading
assessments, without any pre-reading discussion, they need to know how
to interpret the questions and find the answers in the text. Many
students can answer questions that are directly in the text, such as,
“What color is the girl’s dress?” However, many of the questions require
the student to think and search for the answer or take the information
that is given and infer what the author means. These are new skills for
most third graders. It is a learning process, and we are working hard in to
help students learn these new skills.
Tests this week: We have two math tests this week. Please
have your child practice with the Boom Card Decks. I
have included a few decks about time and graphing..
Library Fieldtrip: In a couple of weeks we will be going to the
Yorba Linda Public Library on a fieldtrip. I have enclosed a library
card application for any students who DO NOT already have a
library card. Please fill out and bring back to school by Feb. 1 so
they will be able to check out a book on our fieldtrip.J
