We are second year medical students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) College of
Medicine. As part of the requirements for our course in Family and Community Medicine 2, we are
currently conducting a study entitled “Association between Family Functioning (APGAR) and
Parents’ Attitudes on Handling Adolescents (10-19 yrs old) with Suicidal Tendencies Residing in
Selected Barangays in Malate, Manila”. The objective of the study is to determine the association
between family functioning (APGAR) from the perspective of the parents and their attitudes on handling
suicidal tendencies among adolescents aged 10-19 yrs old. Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Determine the sociodemographic profile of respondents;
2. Determine family functionality as to: a.) dysfunctional and b.) functional using Family APGAR;
3. Determine the attitude of parents towards suicide ideation;
4. Determine the association between family functioning (APGAR) from the perspective of the
parents and their attitudes on handling suicidal tendencies of adolescents aged 10-19 yrs old.

We are second year medical students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) College of
Medicine. As part of the requirements for our course in Family and Community Medicine 2, we are
currently conducting a study entitled “Association between Family Functioning (APGAR) and
Parents’ Attitudes on Handling Adolescents (10-19 yrs old) with Suicidal Tendencies Residing in
Selected Barangays in Malate, Manila”. The objective of the study is to determine the association
between family functioning (APGAR) from the perspective of the parents and their attitudes on handling
suicidal tendencies among adolescents aged 10-19 yrs old. Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Determine the sociodemographic profile of respondents;
2. Determine family functionality as to: a.) dysfunctional and b.) functional using Family APGAR;
3. Determine the attitude of parents towards suicide ideation;
4. Determine the association between family functioning (APGAR) from the perspective of the
parents and their attitudes on handling suicidal tendencies of adolescents aged 10-19 yrs old.
In line with this, we would like to request for permission and assistance from your good office in
conducting our data collection in Barangay 719, Malate, Manila on January 8-31, 2018.
