PROPOSED TOURIST WAITING SHED

DESRIPTION

Sheds are strategically placed near bus and jeep terminals, pedestrian lanes, parking areas and
other places where it is required most. Its primary function is to provide a place for passengers to wait
for public transportation.

Sheds can also provide shelter during bad weather. Aside from its obvious purpose,
advertisements for events, job opportunities and the like are usually posted here. It is a common sense
for people to read these ads while waiting. It is also a fact that it can be a social gathering place
regardless of the different reasons why people go there.

The proposed tourist waiting shed will serve as a special shed for tourists who travel freely to
look up their destinations and how to get there on the information board.

OVERVIEW

Tourism is a sector of the economy that can only be defined in terms of demand. The money
spent by domestic and foreign visitors goes to a variety of different companies in various branches.
These range all the way from industrialized sectors with large companies to small retailers and service
providers.

A tourist industry as such does not exist. Structures in tourism are fugitive. They began to exist
only in the presence of visitors in search of a bundle of tourism services. Moreover, there is an important
distinction to be made between the type of tourism where the travel and the stopover arrangements are
made on a collective basis by tour operations and individual arrangements made by the visitors
themselves.

But the tourism industry has been an important contribution for the rise of our economy. As
measured by the share of tourism direct gross value added (TDGVA) to total gross domestic product
(GDP), the contribution of tourism to the economy was estimated at 8.6 percent in 2016. The TDGVA
amounted to PhP 1,243.5 billion in 2016, higher by 13.7 percent compared to previous year’s (2015) PhP
1,093.4 billion. (Philippine Statistics Authority – June 8, 2017)

On the latest news, Tourism revenue rose to P220.30 billion during the first year of the Duterte
administration said the Department of Tourism (DOT). The figure recorded from July 2016 to May 2017
was 109.13 percent higher than the P106.297-billion revenue reported during the first 11 months (July
2010 – May 2011) of the Aquino government. (The Philippine Star – July 25, 2017)

Being an important contributor in our economy, the government must give importance to the
improvement of tourist destinations and the facilities of the city that houses them.

BACKGROUND

Sheds are particularly located outside public schools to serve as a shelter for bad weather for
people waiting for public transportation. But there were news that certain sheds have been used
unethically by people. These sheds are:

1. PNS Waiting Shed – Hangout place of the gay community especially at late nights. It was not
used s a sitting area. They lie down and create noise throughout the night. At the morning after,
garbage and liquor bottles are scattered around. (Nov. 15, 2017)
2. Manalo Waiting Shed – street dwellers occupy the shed causing disturbance to a church across
the street. (Dec. 5, 2017)
The unethical usage of the waiting sheds must be put to a stop to turn a new leaf for the city. As
a city full of tourist destinations and an important contributor to the industry, we must consider the
comfort in the experience of the tourists.

OBJECTIVES

 To design an establishment of information for tourists seeking directions and locations of the
tourist destinations around the city.
 To provide a place for passengers to wait for public transportation.
 To provide shelter during a bad weather.
 To serve as a place of advertisement for events, job opportunities, etc.

PROPOSED PUBLIC TOILET FOR PUV DRIVERS

DESRIPTION

A public toilet is a room or small building with one or more toilets (or urinals) available for use by
the general public, or by customers or employees of a business. Public toilets are commonly separated
into male and female facilities, although some are unisex, especially for small or single-occupancy public
toilets. Increasingly, public toilets are accessible to people with disabilities. (Wikipedia.org)

The proposed public toilets are for the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) driver’s that are always seen
on the side of the road relieving themselves.

OVERVIEW

Public toilets are typically found in schools, offices, factories, and other places of work. The
availability of toilets in public is almost none. There aren’t many isolated public toilet around the city
that can be accessed immediately because toilets are usually found inside establishments. The inability
to satisfy essential physiological needs because no toilet is available contributes to health issues such as
urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and digestive problems which can later develop into severe
health problems. ("Give us a Loo break!" (8 March 2010) Trade Union Congress)

BACKGROUND

Public toilets play a role in community health and individual well-being. Where toilets are
available, people can enjoy outings and physical activities in their communities. By letting people get out
of their cars and onto their feet, bicycles and mass transit, public toilets can contribute to improved
environmental health. Mental well-being is enhanced when people are out with families and friends and
know a place "to go" is available. (Wikipedia.org)

Public toilets serve people who are "restroom challenged". First, some people need to go very
frequently, including young and old people, females who are pregnant or menstruating, and those with
some medical conditions. Second, some people need toilet access urgently, suddenly and without
warning: such as those with chronic conditions such as Crohn's disease and colitis, and those temporarily
afflicted with food-borne illnesses. (Wikipedia.org)

As an "away-from-home" toilet room, a public toilet can provide far more than access to the
toilet for urination and defecation. People also wash their hands, use the mirrors for grooming, get
drinking water (e.g. refilling water bottles), attend to menstrual hygiene needs, and use the waste bins. It
also trains us to have good sanitation and hygiene practice.

OBJECTIVES
 To provide an establishment for the PUV drivers and private vehicle drivers to relieve
themselves.
 To prevent cases of urinary tract infections, kidney infections, and digestive problems that can
later develop into severe health problem.
 To design a structure that serves the private needs of the people such as urination, defecation,
grooming, menstrual hygiene needs, attending to babies needs and the use of waste baskets.

PROPOSED MATERIALS RECOVERY FACILITY

DESRIPTION

Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is a specialized plant that receives, separates and prepares
recyclable materials for marketing to end-user manufacturers.

The proposed MRF is in accordance to a program of National Solid Waste Management

Commission. It states as follows:

Establishment of Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs)

There shall be established a Material Recovery Facility in every barangay. It shall receive waste
for final sorting according to its type for composting and recycling. It shall be designed to
receive, sort, process and store compostable and recyclable material efficiently and in an
environmentally sound manner.

OVERVIEW

The main function of the MRF is to maximize the quantity of recyclables processed, while
producing materials that will generate the highest possible revenues in the market. It accepts materials,
whether source separated or mixed and separates, processes and stores them for later use as raw
materials for remanufacturing and reprocessing. It can also function to process wastes into a feed stock
or biological conversion or into a fuel source for the production of energy.

BACKGROUND

Based on an observation, there isn’t a single fully functional MRF found in the city of Puerto
Princesa. The MRF scattered around our community are used still as garbage bin. It cannot be considered
as a functional MRF. The members of the community are too dependent to the garbage trucks circulating
the city to collect their wastes that they no longer bother to separate them. And they are also dependent
to our Sanitary Landfill.

OBJECTIVES

 To provide proper facility for the separation and preparation of recyclable wastes in the
community.
 To lessen the scattered garbage/trash/wastes around the community.
 To comply with the project set by the National Solid Waste Management Commission.
