The principal investigators of the National Institute of Science and Technology for CATALYSIS IN
MOLECULAR AND NANOSTRUCTURED SYSTEMS are listed in the table below. The coordinator
and vice-coordinator are from the headquarter institution in order to facilitate the administrative aspects
of the project. The local coordinators, responsible for the coordination of the work carried out at each
participating institution, are also indicated in the table.
The members of the Executive Committee are Faruk Nome, Ademir Neves, Jairton Dupont,
Mario R.Meneghetti and Eduardo N. Santos, whose substitutes are Antonio L. Braga, Paulo A.
S. Suarez, Watson Loh, Omar A. El Seoud and Adriano Monteiro. Four meetings of the
Committee were held:
11-12 February, 2009, at the home institution of the INCT (UFSC): In this first meeting
following approval of the Project, the priorities for the conduction of the Project were
discussed and short and long term goals defined. The Committee decided the format of
the first workshop held to bring together the professors and students of the INCT in
March, 2009. Additional discussions included the characteristics of the INCT web site to
be created and the outline of the script of the educational video to be produced. At the
Meeting, the Committee organized the Fundamentals of the plan of goals submitted to
the CNPq in early 2009.
13-14 March, 2009 at the Hotel Castelmar in Florianópolis, during the Workshop held to
Bing together professors and students of the INCT. At this Meeting, initial difficulties and
solutions were discussed and solutions proposed. In addition, the theme areas of the
INCT and the corresponding coordinators of each theme were defined.
2009, during the 32nd Annual Reunion of the Sociedade Brasileira de Química in
Fortaleza: Exchanges of students and professors were defined and dates set.
Acquisition of the major pieces of permanent equipment and the laboratories where
they were to be allocated were defined. .
20-21 February, 2010, at the home institution of the INCT (UFSC): Coinciding with the
interest in the collection of data for the first year partial report of progress of the project,
the goals accomplished in 2009 were discussed. The difficulties encountered in meeting
some of the objectives were clarified. Implantation of fellowships for students was
discussed. A full financial report of the acquisitions and expenditures in 2009 was
presented. The acquisition of new equipment was planned and the desirability of
directing more financial resources to exchange of students, which showed positive
results in 2009, was debated. The result was the creation of a commission of professors
that will act as intermediaries for student exchanges by receiving from the various nuclei
information on problems to be resolved and indicating potential INCT affiliates that can
potentially aid in the resolution of the problems. This requires that this Commission
have access to knowledge of the infrastructure and research capabilities of the
laboratories that make up the INCT. At this Meeting, the order of business also included
the approval of the report of activities of the first year, the approval of the work plan for
the second year, the definition of priorities and the implantation of actions and/or
changes.
ii. Workshops: The INCT held a comprehensive internal workshop, bringing together the
various professors and students that make up the INCT. In this workshop, lectures were
presented on the work in progress in each nucleus of the INCT in order to foment
collaborations. Round table discussions were also held in each subarea of the INCT to plan
specific goals for each area in terms of collaboration and research. The INCT also
participated in 2 workshops offered to the scientific community:
Workshop “Catálise a Serviço da Química Verde” of the Divisão de Catálise da
Sociedade Brasileira de Química on 30/05/2009 at the 32ª RASBQ in Fortaleza, CE.
Workshop Procad/UnB/UFAL/UFRGS, held in the Instituto de Química da Universidade
de Brasília, on 4-5 December, 2009. There were 16 oral presentations by 7 researchers
and 10 graduate ans undergraduate students from 3 institutions, with paraticipation of
more than 30 UnB graduate and undergraduate students.

The principal research results obtained in each sub-area of the Project were:
Natural Oil-chemistry and Biodiesel: Our group has taken advantage of research
projects in the area of catalysis applied to natural oil-chemistry that use Sn(IV)
complexes, metallic oxides and nanostructured materials. Recently, 2 patents were
deposited in which new catalysts are proposed for the production of biodiesel and for
the oxidative polymerization of unsaturated substrates (for application in thepaint
industry). In addition, projects were approved whose objectives are the synthesis of
gold nanoparticles with different forms and the study of their application as
nanocatalysts for the oxidation of glycerol.
Ionic Liquids: In this first year a new simple and efficient system was developed for the
preparation of transition metal nanoparticles via the bombardment of metallic targets
with energetic ions (sputtering) in ionic liquids. The optical and catalytic properties of the
nanoparticle systems are being investigated, principally in processes for the photolysis
of water, the hydrogenation of aromatic compounds and as new electrochemical
sensors. A series of tensoactive ionic liquids or SAILS, the 1-alkyl-3-methyl imidazolium
chlorides were synthesized by the reaction of 1-methylimidazole with the purified 1-
chloroalkane. The cmc, , and free energies Gads and Gmic were determined,
respectively, by conductivity and surface tensiometry. The aggregation of these SAILS is
more favorable than that of pyridinium chlorides with similar hydrocarbon chains, due to
the high positive charge on the imidazolium ring (calculated theoretically).
