Introduction

Today television has become an inseparable part of our life. This statement has become much
true after the accessibility of cable TV in all the cities and towns of our country. Nowadays, with
the access to cable TV the entire population of our country can be easily divided into two
segments: those who watch Indian channels and those who don't. The female populations of
our country prefer Indian TV serials rather than any other programs telecasted by Indian
channels. Female of various categories like pre- teens, teens, students from renowned
institutions, working women, homemakers, old age women, almost women in every sector are
the main viewers of Indian serials(GhaleNeeru and Karna Rosy, 2009). Moreover, not only
women but also the male members of the family and children are the viewers of Indian serials.
Undoubtedly it can be said that such kind of involvement of female population must affect our
future generation, either negatively or positively. To portray the present situation of Indian
channels and programs especially Indian serials, the article is divided into five sections. Section
one provides an account of historical development of Indian TV channels and its consumption
in Bangladesh. Section two presents a brief analysis of present situation of Indian TV channels
and Indian TV serials in Bangladesh. Section three represents the impact of Indian TV serials on
our future generation and the present situation of Bangladeshi channels are analyzed in the
section four. In the fifth section a theoretical relations have been tried to relate to the topic.

The History of Indian TV Channels and Its Consumption in

Bangladesh

To describe the emergence of Indian TV channels in Bangladesh, at first we have to come across
the beginning of Satellite Television (STV) in Bangladesh. STV appeared in Dhaka city for the
first time in 1991 and in 1992 government legalized the Television Receive Only Dish (TVRO)
system but the installation fee of TVRO was so high in the first stage. However, the scenery was
changed after 1993. At that time the cable operators wired up centers in different parts of the
Dhaka city to make the cable connection available to all. Goonesekera described the situation

4|Page
which is cited by Huda-'' Although CNN pioneered the direct transnational broadcasting in the
decade of eighty the general viewers of Bangladesh eagerly viewed the programs of
Doordorshan by using the boaster antenna. These attempts of the viewers ended with the
advent of Indian channels like Star Jalsha, Star Gold, Zee TV, Zee Bangla, Sony etc'' (Huda 2007).
At present more than ninety TV channels are broadcasted in Bangladesh, out of which twenty
three are Bangladeshi, including the government owned terrestrial channel Bangladesh
Television (BTV). The rest are foreign language channels, the majority of which are Indian
market based. Among these more than forty are purely Indian channels in different languages
including Hindi and Bangla.

The most popular Indian TV channels in Bangladesh

The respondents of this study listed 39 foreign channels which they watch frequently. Most of
the channels are Indian. Findings of the study show that Star Jalsha is the mostly watched
channel. This is because Star Plus is one of the oldest channels and people are acquainted with
it for a long time. In addition, Star Plus broadcasts a large number of Hindi serials all day long. A
survey conducted by 'Centre for Communication and Research' in 1994 portrayed the
popularity of Hindi channels in Bangladesh where Zee TV, STAR Plus were ranked as very
popular channels. The survey showed that in Bangladesh 41% city viewers revealed their
passion for Zee TV, 21% were identified as the viewers of Channel 5, 11% adored STAR Plus and
7% watched Prime Sports regularly in Dhaka city (Rahaman 1994). Going through the study it
can be said that popularity of Indian channels is increasing day by day not only in the Dhaka city
but also all over Bangladesh due to the availability of TVRO support and the least consumption
rate. On the contrary, not a single Bangladeshi TV channel is shown in India though Bangladeshi
channels are already available on major cable networks in United States, Europe and the
Middle East. The most popular Indian TV serials in Bangladesh
Indian TV serials are not only broadcasted in different countries but also so much popular in
those countries as Wikipedia says- ''Indian soap opera have gained popularity abroad, across
South Asia and beyond into Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, and among the Indian Diaspora

elsewhere. A number of Hindi soap operas have also been dubbed into Mandarin and gained
popularity in China (Wikipedia 2013).

Main Viewers of Indian TV serials

All the Indian TV serials are women-centric and key characters are female. It's a strategy to
increase the number of viewers especially women viewers. ShomaMunshi's writings also
support such statements. She wrote- ''The very genre of soap operas is women-centric. This is
the case not just in India, but anywhere in the world. The soaps' characteristic address is to
women viewers'' (Munshi 2009). In Bangladesh main viewers of Indian TV serials are women.
All the respondents of the study told that women especially homemakers, who are not engaged
in productive activities are the main viewers of such kind of soaps. As women are the key
viewers of Indian TV serials, it will affect their family life and also the future generation.

The Themes of Indian TV serials

The majority of Indian television shows are based on the Family and Marriage theme. The titles

Research findings of Broadcasting Indian TV Serials in Bangladesh: The Beginning of the Social
Change': A Study on Present Situation of Bangladesh

Reasons behind Watching Indian TV Shows

Nowadays Indian drama serials are very popular in Bangladesh. Young, old even children are
interested to watch it. These people watch and imitate the life style portrayed in these daily
soaps. That is gradually eating up our traditional and enriched cultural norms and values. Study
revealed that these Indian Drama serials provoke sexual behavior, instigate pre and extra
martial affair, educate criminal activity, originate eve teasing, and nurture conflict between
family members. Study also disclosed that these daily soaps impose Hinduism culture on every
sphere of living of Bangladeshi people. Nowadays gorgeous presentation of women characters
is one of the strategies adopted by the television industries in India to increase the number of
viewers. The directors follow every strategy to catch viewers. For example, clothes, jewelries,
make-up, hair style, fashion, location, other household setting, stories etc. are used to increase
viewers as Ghale and Karna said: To make each serial exclusive the director chooses unique

10 | P a g e
clothing and accessories. Ostensible daily soap operas are made to deliver messages regarding
culture, family relations, struggles of life and mythology through stories, but instead of the
story, the audience is fascinated by the dresses, actors and the jewelries'' (Ghale&Karna, 2009).
The findings of the study show that not only the story but also other accessories hooked the
viewers to the Indian serials.

Too much Advertisement

Bangladeshi television channels show too much advertisement. Television channels spend
approximately half of time of shows by telecasting advertisement. It is a very irritating thing.
For that the audience diverted to Indian television serials. Bangladeshi television channels show
too much advertisement because of advertisement it is the main source of income of them. On
the other hand Indian television channels earned directly from the audience. Maximum Indian
television channels are pre-paid channels. So they have the opportunity to earn more. For that
they have a scope to telecast less advertisement.

Story

It is women's in born nature to show interest in familial matter and Indian serials use these
techniques. It shows a very simple fact related to mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and husband
etcetera in a thrilling way which attracts women viewers. On the other hand, in Bangladesh
there is a lack of qualitative television shows. Stories of many shows are same. So to test the
variation Bangladeshi viewers diverted to Indian television serials and become addicted to them
(GhaleNeeru and Karna Rosy, 2009).

Costumes of the Characters

Nowadays gorgeous presentation of women characters is one of the strategies adopted by the
television industries in India to increase the number of viewers. Almost in all serials women play

11 | P a g e
the vital roles. For that female viewers like these serials so much. Not only female but male
members also like the gorgeous presentation of women in television serials.

Fashion

When an elegant woman, wearing a dazzling sari and classy jewelry, is being telecasted on a
show, the audience certainly gets anchored to their television sets. For a moment they get
swayed by the beauty of the woman.
Sharp make-up, new hair styles, gorgeous sarees and three pieces, panjabies etcetera also
attract the audience and the sources of jewelries, costumes, make-up from which parlor are
shown in the scroll during the show. Many of them think that they can easily introduce with
new fashion by Indian television serials and thy also copied them.

Jewelries

To make each serial exclusive the director chooses unique accessories. Ostensible daily soap
operas are made to deliver messages regarding culture, family relations, struggles of life and
mythology through stories, but instead of the story, the audience is fascinated by the jewelries,
actors and the dresses.

Location/TV Sets

Indian television serials present the location/television gorgeously. Sometimes it cross the
reality. They spend lot money to make a television set. So that it looks so gorgeous. For that the
audience likes these types of serials. On the other hand in Bangladeshi television shows present
the location not so gorgeously Because of lack of budget.

Sixty percent of women in Bangladesh watch Indian television channel ‘Star Jalsha’, which
gained popularity for its daily soaps, reveals a study. The study was conducted by the
Department of Population Sciences of Dhaka University on more than 11,500 women of 11

12 | P a g e
districts under seven divisions of Bangladesh, reports BBC Bangla.mDuring the study, whose
primary objective was to assess the impact of family planning, population and health programs
on the women, a few women opined that they found the diverse storylines of each program of
Star Jalsha unique and intriguing.BelalHossain, an associate professor of the department of
population sciences of Dhaka University, said they found during the study that almost ninety
percent women in Bangladesh watch TV, of them sixty percent watch Indian channels.

Drama is a unique tool to explore and express human behavior, feeling, and emotion. It
highlights the picture of society in a dramatic style which seems to a spectator or viewer that he
is performing himself as Shakespear said, “the world is a stage and we are actors performing in
this stage”. However, drama serial is one of the most popular forms of entertainment for all
ages. In broad sense, tele-drama, an art form involving the techniques of cinematography and
narratology that retains a tremendous capability to penetrate various opaque social realities
and provide formidably transparent portrayals of them, has a powerful impact on modern
society by entering as a fluid medium of entertainment not only the spectators studios and
drawing rooms but also their private chambers and bedrooms.

Impact of Indian Serial in Bangladeshi society

Filthy Dress up

Study shows that 75% respondents admitted that, the model in the Indian drama serials are
presented with filthy dress up. Especially, girls wear very short dresses to show their body by
which the gents easily can be attracted. Our young girl even the middle age women, now a
days, are influence by these dresses. Men of all ages also follow their dress up. In this regard,
Sabina Yasmin a BBA student of Northern University Bangladesh reported,

“Like the Hindi drama serials, their dress up is also popular among our young generation even
among middle age women. It differs with our domestic dress up and it is totally indecent.

13 | P a g e
Nowadays, it is tough to maintain curtain by the influence of Hindi drama serials. Many people
see curtain system ridiculously”.

Inflame sexual behavior

A study conducted on Pakistan showed that, a large number of the respondents 89.7% were of
the view that Indian serials are playing a pivotal role in increasing sexual behavior among youth
the future of the nation (Ansari, S. (2005). There is no denying the fact is that the filthy dresses
of the models provoke tremendous sexuality. Beside vulgar dress up, their attitude,
conversations also influence young generation toward abandoned sexual behavior. That leads
the uncontrolled sex life and accelerates social degradation. Parents are anxious about the
future of their children. Now a day it seems very tough to control children. Because, these
children act what they learn from these drama serials. According to Md. NazmulHaque, teacher
of Southeast Int. School, alleged “Hindi drama serials spreading the flavor of sexuality which is
not allowed in our society. Theses drams diverting our young generation from the mainstream.
Captivating by sexuality, youth cannot pay heed to constructive work, and thinking. They are
losing character because nowadays character is less valuable to them.”

Provoke Pre Marital Relationship

To fall in love with opposite sex without being married is the common scenario of Hindi daily
soaps that was reported by 65% participants. For getting love from opposite partner, they can
do anything. Parents love and affection is less valuable to them. “There are no serials without
love before marriageShameem, Mahmud (2009). It teaches us without love life is meaningless.
So, we must fall in love. Apart from these, it can be seen is these drama serials that, they are
falling love on their friend, girlfriend loving boyfriend also loving girlfriend. I think, it is one kind
of adultery in the name of friendship”. Said TuhinHossain.A student of Dhaka College.

14 | P a g e
Extra Marital Affair

Study revealed that, according to 79% respondents believe, Hindi drama serials are also
responsible for extra marital relationship like pre-marital love. Husband build relationship with
their female colleague or previous girlfriend and wife also maintain relationship with other man
is also the subject matter of theses serials. And these illicit affairs are presented so decently
that the people who engaged with this infidelity are right. But it does not focus on the severe
consequences of this relationship and how it is destroying our family system. Watching these
serials extra marital affair seems very common among the viewer. As MizanurRahman, a 38
years old and employed in a private organization, told “Recently divorce and suicidal death is on
increase in our country resulted from Hindi daily serials since these are very popular among the
people of Bangladesh. Because, these drama show, extra marital affair is not offence rather it is
the way to remove conjugal dispute. It breeds misunderstanding among couple. It is silently
destroying the trust between husband and wife and ultimately family system is becoming
hazardous. However, the tendency of making extra marital relationship is very common in our
society as we are very fond of these daily soaps”.

Originate Eve Teasing

Eve teasing is also taught by Hindi drama serials according to 78% participants. Boys are teasing
girls and working women in the streets, colleges even in the buses and trains. To some extent,
girls are also teasing boys. Viewers of all ages especially our young generation follow and apply
it and they enjoy it very much. “We are passing law to tackle eve teasing and raising social
awareness against it but are not raising our voice against the Hindi drama serials where eve
teasing are telecasted to entertain the people. Eve teasing is a social disease and if we want to
combat eve teasing, we have to boycott Hindi drama serials”. Said Tanjim Islam, a student of
Northern University Bangladesh, ELL program.

15 | P a g e
Nurture Conflict between Daughter in Law and Mother in Law

In this study 90 percent viewers admitted that one of the subject matters of Hindi drama serials
is conflict between daughter and mother in law. They are busy to beat of once back always
stage conspiracy against each other which is breaking the normal relationship among daughter
and mother in law. After watching these serials the daughter in law seems mother in law is her
enemy and likewise mother in law think daughter in law is her rivals. In this way, Hindi serials
instigating family dispute. Apart from these, conflict between brothers and sisters regarding
property or power etc. are also the telecasted in these serials from which less constructive
things are taught. In this regard Mukta a house wife aged 21 years told, “Mother in law is like
mother. Because, husband’s mother is wife’s mother. But in these serials mother in law means
her rival. In contrast, In our society mother in law looks after daughter in law as her daughter.
But watching these serials mother in law starts to see daughter in law as her enemy.”

Educate criminal activity

Hindi drama serials educate criminal action confessed by 61 percent respondents. It shows how
to do harm counterpart, how to originate discord among family members even how to kill
people. It teaches to kill opposite person by mixing poison in food or hiring hoodlums to success
operation. The technique of child abduction is also taught in these serials. “Social crime can be
learned from Hindi daily soaps. Because it telecast how offensive activities are occurred. So an
ill person can easily get idea to commit criminal act through these serials”. Said MamunHossain,
student of Computer science of Stamford University.

Impose cultural Intrusion

It is alleged by 79 percent participants that Indian drama serials impose cultural aggression on
our local culture. Bangladesh is the second largest Muslim country in the world. Her 90 percent
people follower of Islam. Their entire culture is Islam oriented. But these serials spreading
Hinduism culture among Bangladeshi people. It can be observed in case of food habit, dress up,
speaking style, rituals and festivals. So, these are silently undermining our local culture and

16 | P a g e
increasing the sense of Hinduism. According to MehediHasanTanim, the student of Textle
department of Northen University Bangladesh reported that “Due to mass popularity of Hindi
Drama serials, we are losing our local culture. These only reflect the culture of India which is not
accordance with our Bangladeshi culture. Thus, our blind people who have keen interest on
Hindi daily soaps cannot distinguish between Indian and Bangladesh culture. Gradually they are
following Hinduism avoiding our domestic enriched culture. This is very dangerous
consequences of Hindi drama serials. Now it is question of identity. Because there is a proverb,
if you lose your culture, you will lose your identity.”

Recommendations

Indian drama serials are not only wasting our valuable time, interrupting children’s education
but also these are instigating sexual behavior, conflict among family member, criminal activity,
pre and extra marital relationship. Apart from these, it is imposing cultural intrusion that is
affecting our prolonged enriched cultural norms and values which can be observed through
tremendous Hinduism culture in dress up and festivals. So this can be regarded as source of
social disorganization in Bangladesh instead of source of entertainment. In order to save our
traditional culture and stop cultural aggression, some initiatives are indispensably needed to
implement such as:
1. The programs should not be telecasted which is hazardous for our cultural values and
traditions. The government should take initiatives in this concern.
2. Our local drama serials have to be made more attractive that can avert our viewers both
male and female from watching Indian daily soaps.
3. Drama serials should convey the message what is good and what is bad. It must practically
show to stop the evil and go well.
4. The guardian should watch the channels which telecast educational program such as BBC,
CNN and sports channel such as Star Sports and make the other family member interested to
watch these channels.

17 | P a g e
5. Awareness has to be raised among people about the long term impacts of Indian drama
serials on Bangladeshi family and social system.

Role Of social Worker

Social worker as professional personnel can make conscious so that they should realize that
Indian society and Bangladeshi society is not same. So they should stop following their life style.
Bangladeshi people have to be conscious. They should be aware of their own rights and values.
They should not allow such discrimination to take place. They must not be influenced or guided
by some other culture. Bangladeshi media, politicians, artists, models, stars and else every
citizen should promote its own Bangladeshi culture instead of imitating the culture of other’s
countries. Indian drama serials are not only popular in India but also it is much popular among
the people of all age in Bangladesh. The family is hardly seen in Bangladesh where Indian drama
serial (Hindi or Bangla) is not seen. People enjoy these dramas and imitate the life style
depicted in these serials which is undermining our culture and spreading the culture of
Hinduism. Our culture is at a stake now due to the addiction in Hindi drama serials. There is
proverb, “If your lose your culture, you will lose your identity’. So, time has come to think what
is telecasting in this Indian daily soaps and what we are learning. Otherwise, if we fail to identify
the negative consequences of these serials we will lose our identity as Bangladeshi in the
course of time.

Conclusion

Nowadays Indian drama serials (Hindi and Indian Bangla) have become the most popular
entertainment in our country and it is getting more popularity. A good percentage of our
population now watches Indian drama serials. Young and the old even the children are also
interested to watch it. The family is hardly found where these serials are not viewed regularly.
These viewers are blindly following the Indian culture what are portrayed in these serials. It is
destroying our culture, values, beliefs and traditions. Bangladesh is the second largest Muslim

18 | P a g e
majority country. Around 90% people of Bangladesh are Muslims which influence its culture
and history. Likewise, Hinduism is the dominant faith in India, practiced by over 80% of the
population. It is evident that, Islam and Hindu are not only two religions but also two social
orders. Because, their eating habit, clothing, speaking, script, sculpture, in a word, their entire
culture is totally different. Bangladesh is a Muslim majority country mentioned above but her
population is losing their local culture gradually due to Indian drama serials. In the meantime it
is mentionable that these serials affect people’s mentality greatly. The females of our country
install the notions shown in the serials in their own lives which is really dangerous. For example-
extra marital relationship is one of the features of Indian serials. As people very carefully follow
the serials, they also develop a desire to have such illegal relationship in their minds. As a result
an increasing number of city dwellers are now engaged in adultery which raises conjugal
problems that sometimes lead to conflicts and even to divorce. Another common criterion of
these serials is the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. As women are the
greatest fans of serials, they also have started practicing those in our country. In most of the
families, daughter-in-law and mother-in-law are not in good relation. Daughter-in-laws show
disrespect to mother-in-laws instead of helping them in their old age.. And to do so,
Bangladeshi TV channels should re-consider their policies to attract native audience. For
instance- they can decrease the number of commercial breaks so that the viewers do not get
