5th Grade Homework

Math Expectations:
Math homework will be sent home each Monday and will be due on Friday. Homework may
vary some from week to week, but will include a math worksheet and MAH (Math facts At
Home). Students should practice math facts for a minimum of 5 minutes each night. The worksheet will include practice
math problems as well as response questions. It should be a review from the week or from previous units. Students
should be able to complete it on their own, if they have trouble with parts of it they should talk to me about it before
Friday. A math fluency game will be included some weeks. We play the math game in class before it is sent home so
students will know how play. Students may play the game in the place of their MAH practice one or two days on the
weeks a game is sent home.

MAH practice suggestions:

Flashcards (homemade or bought)

Verbal (parents/sibling says a fact for student to answer quickly)

Computer Games (FASTT Math/Math Magician on Launchpoint is great practice; www.abcya also has some fun math
fact practice games, as well as many others—I will give suggestions throughout the year)

Apps

Card Games (ex. Multiplication War- this can be played 2 ways. Partner Game (Speed Practice)- Deal out all cards- each
player turns over a card at the same time- the first person to multiply the 2 cards and say the answer first wins; Another
version- deal out all the cards. Each player turns over their top 2 cards and multiplies them- the player with the highest
product wins the round)

Reading Expectations:
Each student is expected to read at least 15-20 minutes each night. There is no reading log for parents to sign this year.
We will be keeping a log at school in our Reader’s Notebook. Each time a student completes a book, he/she will record it
here. The students and I have also decided that whatever books they choose to read in class can be taken home to read
at night. That way, they are not reading two books at one time. We have reviewed expectations for keeping books safe
and in good shape so they can continue to take my books home. If parents are ok with allowing students to bring
personal books to school to read, that is fine with me as well.

During the week we will have a “Status of the Class” update where 4-5 students briefly update us on what they are
reading and where they are in the book. I will keep a record of this as well. We have set a goal for each student to read
40 books this school year, which equals out to 10 books per nine weeks. I am encouraging students to try different
genres of books as well to try to broaden their reading interest.. The Wildcat Reading Challenge (school reading
initiative) will tie in with our reading goals as well and will incorporate some technology for students. There will only be
4 cards this year instead of the 6 from last year. The first Wildcat Reading card for 5th grade has 4 things for the students
to complete and again, those are also counted for our 40 Book Challenge!

Science/Social Studies Expectations:

There will not be nightly homework for Science or Social studies. However, students are expected to study at home for
any upcoming test for these classes. Test dates will be noted in the agenda.

Please email us if you have any questions about homework expectations!
