plus)

Monday – Thursday Weekly - Free Aerobics & Yoga Classes at North Michigan Park Recreation
Center, 1333 Emerson St, NE: These classes include Cardio-vascular exercises on Mon/Wed from
10:00am – 11am (Aerobics) and Tues/Thurs from 10:00am-11:00am (Yoga). These classes aim at
helping you lose weight; reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol levels; and prevent or manage
diabetes.

Monday, Jan 8th, referenced the Historic Landmark Application #17-17: The Bloomingdale Historic
District will include all addresses, lots and condominium units within Squares 3099 – 3125 and 3127,
plus federal Reservations 276A & 277A. The Bloomingdale Historic Designation Survey postcard has
been mailed and received by some. I ask that you review and complete the survey, then return it by
mail. The postmark deadline for returning this survey is January 25th.

Along with the postcard, you may voice your opinion in support or opposition at any time prior to the
hearing that may be schedule by or after February 2018. Don’t wait until the hearing date to voice your
opinion; please provide your testimony now.

The principal purposes of Historic District Designation are: the recognition of the historic or architectural
importance of a property; and its protection through the future review, by the Historic Preservation Office
and/or the Historic Preservation Review Board, of proposed subdivisions and permit applications of
construction, alteration and demolition.

The regulations do not set out specific requirements for demonstrating community support. That is not a
required part of an application. It is something that the Board considers, however. The regulations do
address public comments:

213.1 During the time between public notice and the designation hearing, the Board shall accept
written comments from affected property owners and any other interested persons concurring in or
objecting to the designation and National Register nomination.

Monday, Jan 8th, Stronghold Civic Association (SCA) SCA meets at the Inspired Teaching Public

Thursday, Jan 11th, MAG Meeting is held every 2nd Thursday of each month from 7AM-9PM. Minutes

Kirby Vining 202-213-2690. The community is welcome to attend at the Inspired Teaching Public
Charter School, 200 Douglas St NE.

The current phase of work on the McMillan Site is conducted by Gilbane Reps. The POC is Karen Watts,

- Preparing documentation of analysis of the structure work


- Documenting pre-constructive survey
- Will check into the “New Hire Order” (CBE) for District Residents

Tuesday, Jan 23rd, the Fifth District Community Justice Advisory Network (CJAN) Meeting is held
from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. It will take place at the Alfred A. Owens Jr. Family Life Community Center
located at 605 Rhode Island Avenue, NE. CSOSA and the United States Attorney’s Office for the
District of Columbia (USAO-DC) have partnered to bring the Fifth District community a very
informative meeting about how Heroin and Opioids has hit the community hard in our community in
recent months. This CJAN will bring Awareness to how prevalent this issue is and ways the community
can work towards the Prevention of this deadly health matter via various Intervention mechanisms.

Wednesday, Jan 24th, @ 7-8 pm, PSA501 Monthly Meeting is held at George's Episcopal Church, 160 U
Street, NW. Speakers are PSA Lieutenant William Verna, Sergeants Farid Fawzi and Nicole Brown.
Discussions will include PSA501 Monthly Crime Stats; Address any immediate concerns; and discuss
problem solving techniques. PSA 501 will gathering every 4th Wednesday of the month in order to
discuss the PSA’s Crime Stats, and work on problem solving techniques to address any area’s that are in

Thursday, Fed 1st is the deadline of submission of the Events DC Community Grants Program. Events
DC strives to be an active and engaged community partner and the grants program is an integral part of
our community outreach efforts by providing resources to organizations, we can ensure that DC youth are
exposed to sports, performing or cultural arts in the District of Columbia. Attached are the guidelines,
checklist and application for the second round of the Fiscal Year 2018 semi-annual Events DC
Community Grant Program. Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be
considered:

Be a DC-based non-profit organization certified as tax exempt in accordance with criteria set forth by the
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Tax Code and granted an exemption
from District of Columbia income and franchise taxes, pursuant to DC Code § 47-1802.01; Utilize grant
funding for programs or projects that support youth-focused sports, performing or cultural arts in the
District of Columbia; and Present a copy of an annual financial audit conducted by a certified public
accountant for the organization’s most recent fiscal year; or if the organization has not conducted an
annual financial audit, a copy of the organization’s IRS Form 990 for the most recent tax year.

Applications are due no later than February 1, 2018. Applicants will be notified of their award status by
April 15, 2018. Applications received after February 1, 2018, will not be considered during the Fiscal
Year 2018 grants program cycle.

Community Concerns:
DC Central Kitchen: Nourishing Communities – They fight for food justice, working with small, local
farmers to bring healthy food and fresh produce to DC schools and corner stores. Both corner stores
within SMD 5E09 participate in the program sponsors by DC Central Kitchen to provide healthy food and
fresh produce to the community. Take a tour to see what these two stores have to offer to you.

Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA): Construction will not be permitted on
Holidays. On this day, all construction work for which a permit is required is illegal and could result in a
Stop Work Order and may be subject to fines. For more information visit: dcra.dc.gov/service/report-

Department of Public Works (DPW) Tips for Resident


Avoid a Sanitation Tickets: It’s the law - we should pull our trash cans into our yards. Help keep the
alleys free of litter and trash by cleaning up near your home. This will help to keep rodents down and
crime, too.

Regular Trash Collection: Place trash and recycle containers out for collection no earlier than 6:30 PM
on the night before - no later than 6 AM the morning of collection day. Residents are required to remove
trash and recycle containers from public space (the alley) by 8 PM on your collection day. (Holiday trees
should be placed with your regular trash collection)

Bulk Trash Collection: Call 311 to set up appointments before placing bulk trash out (7 items) for
collection. Place bulk trash out no earlier than 6:30PM the day before and no later than 6 AM on
collection day. Place them where the trash and recycle are collected. Without appointment: Take bulk
items to the Fort Totten Transfer Station, 4900 John F. McCormack Drive NE.

Yard Cleaning and Grass Cutting: Residents are responsible for the up keep of the area abutting the
front and back of their homes. This may include front and back yards, sidewalk and alley abutting your
home. Fines may occur from the city if DPW or other agencies have to come out to accommodate this
request.

City Services (Call 311) include abandoned autos, alley cleaning, illegal dumping, parking enforcement,
potholes, trees, & street lights. The rep will provide a tracking # of your request. Celeste Duffie,

Visitor Parking Passes are not automatically mailed to residents. To request a Visitor Parking Pass for
your residence, go to ddot@dc.gov. Open the visitor parking pass site on the left side of the screen and
follow the instructions. You can use the following ID - DC driver’s license, DC ID, or if a homeowner,
use the Square and Lot number.

Department of Health (DOH) Rodent Control Tips for Residents:


Residents, visitors and business owners, let’s work together to reduce rodent activity in our city!
Eliminate all clutter around the outside of homes and under porches.
Store any garbage in metal or heavy plastic containers with tight-fitting lids and place trash at point of
collection shortly before pickup — not days in advance.
Remove weeds and debris near your property/yards where rats can hide easily. Plants such as English Ivy,
Periwinkle, Pachysandra, and Hostas are known to be cover for rats.
Store food in metal, glass or heavy duty plastic containers with tight fitting lids
Remove uneaten pet food, and store pet food in secure containers.

Add metal weather stripping and trim to doors to prevent rodents from gnawing and entering underneath.
Complaints: Please call 311 to report rodent complaints. Please call (202) 535-1954 for information,
outreach, educational materials, and enforcement. To report a rat bite, sick rat or injured rat, contact the
Animal Control Division at (202) 576-6664.

DC Human Resources (DCHR) – More home purchase assistance is now available for DC Employees
and First Responders: Mayor Bowser’s top priorities include making housing more affordable for
residents and building a safer, stronger DC. Therefore, it is important that the city is a place where more
District government employees and first-responders can work—and live. Over the years, hundreds of
employees have used the District’s Employer-Assisted Housing Program (EAHP) to become first-time
homeowners in the District. This fall, the Mayor announced changes to EAHP that give District
government employees and first-responders even more home purchasing power:

All eligible District government employees can get: an expansion of a deferred, zero interest loan—to
$20,000 from $10,000; and $1,000 in District-matched funds for each $2,500 of borrower savings—now
up to a maximum $5,000 (up from $1,500). Example: William has $7,500 in savings ($2,500 x 3). He
qualifies for a $3,000 grant (3 x $1,000).

First-responders (police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, emergency medical technicians, and
corrections officers) can receive: In addition to the maximum $20,000 loan, up to $10,000 in down
payment assistance in the form of a recoverable grant. Participants must maintain the property as their
principal residence for five years and satisfy a five-year service commitment signed at the time of the
home purchase. If those conditions are not met, the $10,000 grant converts to a deferred zero interest
loans: $1,500 in District-matched funds for every $2,500 of borrower savings, up to $15,000. Example:
Michelle has $7,500 in savings ($2,500 x 3). Therefore, she qualifies for a $4,500 grant (3 x $1,500).

District government employees who currently live in the District also can apply for up to $80,000 in
assistance under the Home Purchase Assistance Program (HPAP)—this means that all employees can
potentially receive up to $109,000 in home purchase assistance and first-responders can potentially
receive up to $129,000.

These enhancements, effective for all loan closings occurring on or after November 20, 2017 and subject
to program funding availability, will help ensure that the District government is recruiting and retaining
the best and brightest talent to work and live in the city. For details on how to apply, go to

District Department of Transportation (DDOT): The 311 # is the option for citizens to notify the city
about traffic-related mechanisms that have been implemented & are faulty (warning signs, faded
crosswalk lines, etc.). New traffic-related safety mechanism should be sent to DDOT through their
website.
