However, every once in a while
I felt a little twinge of unease.
Since I was so far along in the
process, I kept going, but each
day the feeling increased until
I abandoned the plan. Although
the direction looked right, the
Spirit was warning me that it
was either not God’s purpose or
not the right time.
TO RECEIVE GOD’S CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS, WE MUST
WATCH OUT FOR PITFALLS. Sometimes our
desires get in the way. Suppose
something in a store or online
looks very appealing. You imag-
ine how great it would be to
own, and the more it dominates
your thoughts, the greater your
desire becomes. Before long, you
can’t even hear the Spirit’s voice
because your mind and heart
have already made the decision.
The solution is to bring that
desire to a point of neutrality by
surrendering it to the Lord. The
more you let go, the weaker its
hold will become, until you once
again desire what God wants.
Beware of impatience. When a
decision seems urgent, we want
God to provide an answer imme-
diately. We may pray about the
matter, but if the Lord doesn’t
answer soon enough, we take
matters into our own hands.
Who knows how many peo-
ple have rushed into marriage
because they thought it was their
only chance, or felt pressured to
purchase a car or house because
the sale price was good only for
a short time? The problem with
impatience is that it can cause us
to jump ahead of God.
Patience requires that we pause
until we receive further instruc-
tions from the Lord. This can be
especially challenging when we

keep feeling pressure to settle a
matter. Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait
for the Lord; be strong and let
your heart take courage; yes, wait
for the Lord.” To stand alone as
we wait for God’s clear guidance

other people are urging us to make
a decision quickly. By choosing
to wait, we will probably be mis-
understood by those who don’t
understand how the Lord works.
We must also avoid relying
solely on the counsel of others.
Although the Bible recommends
that we listen to wise, godly
counsel (Prov. 19:20), we must
not make this a substitute for
seeking personal guidance from
the Lord. Sometimes He works
through other people to direct

our path, but ultimately, He’s the
one who knows every aspect of
the situation. Therefore, God
is the only counselor who will
never lead us astray.
What a comfort to know that
we are not left on this earth to
find our own way. As Christians,
we can confidently count on
divine guidance in every situa-
tion. When we’re making deci-
sions, the key to peace is trust in
God. Even if our prayers are not
being answered quickly, we have
confidence that the Lord knows
what’s best and will make the way
clear at just the right time. 

ou may be wrestling with many questions, but the
most important to answer is this: Is Jesus Christ my
Lord and Savior?
The story of God and mankind began with a broken
relationship. When sin entered the human race, it
severed our communion—our unhindered connection—with holy God.
Today, our personal sins continue to be a barrier between us and Him. But
the Bible teaches that “God is love” (1 John 4:8). In fact, He loves us so much
that He sent His Son to reconcile us to Himself (Col. 1:18-22). On the cross,
Jesus defeated sin and then rose from the grave, triumphing over death.
By choosing to live in relationship with Jesus Christ, we’re no longer slaves
to the way of life that ends in spiritual death—eternal separation from God
and His lovingkindness. Through Him alone, we can experience freedom and
joy. But to be saved, we must confess from our heart that Jesus is Lord and
believe that He rose from the dead and is alive today (Rom. 10:9).
You can have eternal life now by asking Jesus to become your Savior. Pray
a prayer like this or use your own words:
Lord Jesus, I believe You died so that I might be accepted as a child of
God. Please forgive me, help me turn from my sins, and show me how
to follow You each and every day. Thank You for saving me and
giving me eternal life. Amen.

The apostle John wrote his
refers to himself as the “disciple
whom Jesus loved” (John 20:2).
When he wrote his first epistle,
about 60 years had passed since
he was in the physical presence
of the Son of God, but neither
his memory nor his passion for
Christ had faded.
In this letter, John offers
us an eyewitness account of
“what was from the beginning”
(1 John 1:1). This phrase is his
way of referring to the eternal
Son of God, who existed before
the beginning of time and cre-
ation. It’s similar to his gospel, in
which he refers to Jesus as “the
Word,” saying, “In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was
God” (John 1:1).

John could never forget those
three years spent with the
incarnate Son of God, who lived
among mankind. In verse one of
1 John 1, he describes his expe-
rience in three ways:
“ What

John had listened to Jesus
teach, confront and con-
found religious leaders,
comfort Mary and Martha
in the death of their brother,
and raise him to life by com-

manding, “Lazarus, come
forth” (John 11:43). He was
in the upper room when
you write: “Born to …”?
Jesus gave His final instruc-
tions to the disciples, and
John heard His prayer of
intercession for them to the
Father (chapters 13-17). All
this was still ringing in his
ears six decades later.
“What we have seen with
our eyes.” John watched
Jesus turn water to wine,
calm a stormy sea, walk on
the water, heal lepers, raise
a dead girl, restore sight to
the blind and hearing to the
deaf, make lame men walk,
and multiply food to feed
over 5,000 people. This was
more than enough evidence
to convince him that Jesus
truly was the Son of God.

The apostle’s greatest desire
was to proclaim what he had
seen and heard concerning
Jesus so that others would
believe in Him. That’s why he
wrote his epistle, which is still
a witness to us today. He con-
cludes the introduction by say-
ing, “These things we write, so

made complete” (v. 4). To John,
proclaiming Christ was more
than just a privilege and respon-
sibility—it was what gave him
fullness of joy.
THE JOY OF SHARING CHRIST Although none
of us are eyewitnesses of Jesus’
life and ministry the way John
was, we too can know Him as
Peter describes in his first epistle:
“Though you have not seen Him,
you love Him, and though you do
not see Him now, but believe in
Him, you greatly rejoice with joy
inexpressible and full of glory”
(1 Pet. 1:8). We can have that
same fullness of joy when Jesus
becomes our Savior, the passion
of our life, and the topic of our
conversations with others.

Like John, we have a testi-
mony to share with those who
don’t know Jesus as Savior and
Lord. To be an effective witness
for Christ doesn’t require a theo-
logical degree or answers to all
the questions. We can simply
follow John’s pattern of tell-
ing others what we have heard,
seen, and felt concerning Christ.
What
 have you heard? If
you are a Christian, you’ve
heard and accepted the gos-
pel, and this is the same mes-

sage of salvation you are to
share with others. If you’ve
ever shared your faith with
someone else, you know
exactly what John is talking
about when he mentions
fullness of joy (John 15:11).
There’s a thrilling sense of
excitement and satisfaction
in telling others how they
too can be freed from sin and
receive eternal life through
Jesus Christ.

If you’ve ever shared your
faith with someone else,
you know exactly what
John is talking about when he
mentions fullness of joy.
W hat
have you seen?
Although we can’t observe
Jesus with our physical
eyes, if we have known Him
for any length of time, we’ve
seen how He’s worked in
our life. We are no longer
the person we once were,
because Christ not only
saves us for eternity; He also
transforms us in this life.
And the longer we’ve walked
with Him, the more we have
to share with others.
What have you felt? Those
of us who have responded
in repentance and faith in
Christ know the freedom
and joy that come when
we believe the gospel and
receive the forgiveness of
all our sins. When we share
what we’ve experienced, it
may open the eyes of those
who don’t know Him and
help them see that convic-
tion isn’t God’s condemna-
tion; rather, it’s His invitation

to salvation and eternal life.
Once they receive Christ as
Savior, they’ll discover what
we have—His amazing love,
acceptance, compassion,
peace, contentment, and joy.
We were born to tell others
about Jesus. It’s not as compli-
cated as we sometimes make
it, but being His witnesses does
require boldness and courage.
Thankfully, God provides that
as well, and as we overcome our
fear and uncertainty and start
telling people what He has done
in our life, we’ll be filled with
joy—whether our message is
received or not. The more we
talk about our Savior, the easier
it will become and the more joy
we’ll have. And that will become
a kind of witness itself, one that
will draw others to the source—
the Lord Jesus Christ. 

people were asleep.
The most

in Exodus 12:1-36. While His
people were enslaved in Egypt,
God intervened in the darkness
of night to bring deliverance. As
the Egyptians slept, the Lord
moved through the country, kill-
ing every firstborn human being
and animal in the land. The only
exceptions were the Israelites
who’d obeyed God by marking
their doorways with the blood
of a spotless lamb. In one night,
the Lord set the entire nation
free and brought them out of
Egypt to become a people for
His own possession.
FROM CAPTIVITY TO RESTORATION In

the land God had promised them
and became an independent
nation. However, they continu-
ally strayed from the Lord until
they eventually suffered the
consequences for their idolatry
and were taken into captivity in
Babylon. But God hadn’t aban-
doned them.

His work doesn’t cease
when we close our eyes and
surrender to the night.
One night as the Babylonian
king reveled and mocked the
Lord, a hand suddenly appeared
and wrote a message on the wall
(Dan. 5:1-31). Daniel interpreted
the words, which said, “God
has numbered your kingdom
and put an end to it … You have
been weighed on the scales and
found deficient … Your kingdom
has been divided and given over
to the Medes and the Persians”
(vv. 26-28). That very night the
Persian troops entered Babylon,
killed the king, and took over the
city. The Jewish captives didn’t
realize that in one night, God
had opened the door to restore
them to their land. During the
first year of his reign, the Per-
sian king set the Jewish people
free to return to their homeland
once again.
FROM WAITING TO HOPE FULFILLED Although
the Israelites were now in their
land, they were never totally
free, because various Gentile

empires continued to rule over
them. Their great hope was that
their Messiah would soon come
to liberate them. Once again,
while most of the people in Beth-
lehem were sound asleep, God
intervened in the affairs of earth
(Luke 2:1-20). In a dark stable,
the Messiah entered the world as
a tiny, helpless newborn. Of all
the nights that have ever been,
this one was the most profound.
The infant Messiah was the Son
of God, who left heaven and took
on human flesh to dwell with
mankind and become the Savior
of the world.
Time passed, and as Jesus
grew into manhood, He began
teaching and performing mir-
acles as proof that He was the
Messiah. However, the Jew-
ish leaders were reluctant to
accept Him. One night Nicode-
mus, a prominent Pharisee and
teacher, came to Jesus with his
questions (John 3:1-21). There in

Christ explained that He’d been
sent by His Father so the world
could be saved through Him. One
could never attain salvation by
trying to be good enough, but
only through faith in Jesus.
The Jewish leaders’ hostility
toward Jesus continued to grow
because He didn’t fit their expec-
tations of the Messiah. And Judas,
one of Jesus’ own disciples, also
became disillusioned and decided
to betray Him to the religious
leaders (John 13:21-30). During
the Passover celebration with
His disciples, Jesus told Judas,
“What you do, do quickly,” and
“he went out immediately; and
it was night” (vv. 27, 30). Judas
was unaware that God would use
his betrayal to begin the process
that would put Jesus on the cross
and bring about the redemption
of mankind.
After Judas left, Jesus and
His other disciples walked to
the Mount of Olives in the dark-
ness (Matt. 26:36-46). In a gar-
den there, He pleaded with His
Father, saying, “If it is possible,
let this cup pass from Me; yet not
as I will, but as You will” (v. 39).
The one who had never known
sin or been separated from the
Father was soon to bear the sins
of the world. And although Jesus
dreaded the experience, He sub-
mitted to the Father because
there was no other way to save
sinful mankind.
Within a few hours, our Lord
was hanging on a cross, suffer-
ing excruciating pain, humilia-
tion, and ridicule (27:33-51). For
three daytime hours, darkness
covered the land as Jesus bore
the Father’s judgment for the
sins of mankind. Then He cried
out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30).

None of us can
fathom what happened
in the darkness that day
as Jesus suffered for us.
All we can do is thank Him.
The perfect Lamb of God had
paid the penalty for sin so that
all who believe in Him could be
justified (declared not guilty) and
receive eternal life. None of us
can fathom what happened in the
darkness that day or what Jesus
suffered for us so we could be res-
cued from an eternity in hell, sep-
arated from God. All we can do is
believe, surrender fully to Christ,
and thank Him for our salvation.
The disciples were in despair
after Jesus’ death. Why had
God let the Messiah die? Now,
it seemed, there would be no
kingdom and no glory. Jesus had
been buried, and all hope was
lost. Yet in the darkness of early
Sunday morning, a miracle hap-
pened (Matt. 28:1-2). As some
women came to the tomb, they
discovered that it was empty.
While the world slept, God had
raised His Son to life.
FROM THE KINGDOM OF THIS WORLD TO THE KING-

history. At that time, “the sun
will be darkened, and the moon
will not give its light, and … [then
everyone] will see the Son of
Man coming on the clouds of the
sky with power and great glory”
(24:29-30).
Throughout human history,
the Lord has accomplished the
miraculous under the cover of
night. There are bound to be
times when we can’t under-
stand what God is doing or feel
our lives are engulfed in the
darkness of despair, difficulty,
or suffering. Yet even then, we
have the assurance that just as
He has worked to achieve His
perfect will throughout history,
He’s also working in our dark-
ness to accomplish His good
purpose in our lives. When life
seems mysterious, all we have
to do is remember that to God,
“the night is as bright as the day”
(Ps. 139:12). He sees, and noth-
ing is beyond His control. 
