GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

POWER TRANSFORMERS 6290-A

1.0 SCOPE

This specification covers the minimum requirements for three-phase oil filled
transformers rated over 500 kVA.

2.0 CODES, REGULATIONS AND STANDARDS

2.1 Vendor shall meet or exceed the requirements of the latest edition of the following
codes, regulations and standards, except as superseded herein. In cases where
more than one code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most
stringent shall be followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and
other specifications or correspondence, the OWNER shall be consulted and a
ruling, in writing, shall be obtained before any work is started.

• IEC 36 IEC standard voltages

• IEC 71 Insulation co-ordination

• IEC 76 Power transformers

• IEC 85 Thermal evaluation and classification of electrical insulation

• IEC 99 Lightning arresters

• IEC 185 Current transformers

• IEC 214 On load tap changers

• IEC 529 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

• IEC 542 Application guide for on load tap changers

• IEC 551 Determination of transformer and reactor sound levels

2.2 Some requirements in this specification may be modified by specific requirements

in the Purchase Specification. In case of conflict, the specific requirements
supersede this specification.

2.3 Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by OWNER.
Such written approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work
which would constitute such a deviation.

POWER TRANSFORMERS 6290-A

3.0 DEFINITIONS

OWNER shall mean the OWNER as set out in the Request for Quotation (RFQ) or
any other person, firm or corporation engaged by OWNER, to perform services to
which this specification is applicable.

Vendor shall mean the person(s) or company(ies) selling the product specified in
this specification to the OWNER.

A Routine Test means a test to which each individual transformer is subjected.

A Type-Test means a test made to verify a design characteristic not covered by a

routine test.

Standard means that the feature, accessory or test is provided in accordance with
the applicable IEC Standard, without additional specification by the OWNER.

Provision for Cooling means that the transformer shall have, as a minimum,
adequate capacity in all current-carrying parts, plus fan support bracket(s) and
thermowell.

4.0 DESIGN

Transformers shall be built in accordance with and contain all the standard
features specified in IEC 71, plus this Specification.

5.0 MATERIALS

5.1 Oil

The Vendor shall use "Mineral Based" transformer oil. Oils containing PCB's are
not acceptable.

The oil shall contain oxidation inhibitors and shall have a breakdown voltage of 30
kV minimum when tested according to ASTM D 877.

5.2 Exposed Metal

There shall be no exposed copper, silver or their alloys. Copper buses or

connectors shall be tin-plated.

5.3 Valves

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

POWER TRANSFORMERS 6290-A

Valves shall be made from steel (i.e. no copper or copper alloys).

5.4 Conductors

Windings shall be copper.

6.0 FABRICATION/CONSTRUCTION

6.1 General

6.1.1 The wye-connected windings of transformers shall have the neutral point
connected to a neutral terminal suitable for grounding.

6.1.2 High-voltage windings shall have four (4) 2.5% full capacity taps, two above and
two below rated voltage; tap changing shall be "off-load".

6.1.3 Dial gauges, valves, tap changer handle and nameplate shall all be on one side of
the transformer.

6.1.4 Alarm and control wiring shall be clearly labelled using heat shrink tubing, and be
terminated in a weatherproof junction box with a wiring diagram enclosed.

6.1.5 Piping and fittings shall be screwed or socket welded. Backwelding of screwed
fittings shall not be done.

6.1.6 Electrical switches and relays shall have weatherproof enclosures.

6.1.7 Wiring outside of junction boxes shall be run in conduit.

6.1.8 The transformers shall be of the sealed tank type.

6.1.9 Insulation levels shall be to IEC 79, for Power Transformers.

6.1.10 Average winding temperature rise at Full Load shall be 55°C, however, insulation
shall be rated for 65°C rise.

6.2 Accessories

Unless otherwise specified on the Data Sheet, the following accessories are
required:

• Drain/sampling valve with plug.

• Top filter press connection.
• Provision for jacking and rolling.
• Provision for bolting.
• Thermometer (measuring top liquid) with maximum indicating drag hand.

GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS

POWER TRANSFORMERS 6290-A

• Liquid-level gauge.
• Vacuum/pressure gauge.
• Provision for High Side lightning arrestor (Vendor to specify rating and type).
• Taps, with a lockable off-load tap changer handle and position indicator (also
see sub-section 6.1.3)
• Explosion relief device.
• Provision for fan cooling.
• Tank capable of withstanding pressures of +50 kPa and vacuum of 50 mm
mercury.
• Automatic pressure relief.

7.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING

7.1 Tests

Transformers shall be tested as specified in IEC 79 for the tests listed below:

• Ratio on each connection.

• Polarity or angular displacement.
• No-load losses at rated voltage.
• Exciting current at rated voltage.
• Load losses and impedance at rated current and voltage connection.
• Applied voltage.
• Induced voltage.
• Resistance.
• Temperature rise.
• Impulse strength.
• Radio influence voltage.
• Switching impulse.
• Pressure (see sub-section 6.2).
• Functional tests of auxiliary devices.
• Insulation tests of auxiliary devices and wiring.

7.2. Variance

Where tests show the efficiency of the transformer is less than the guaranteed
value quoted, the Vendor shall incur a cost penalty. The amount of this penalty
shall equal the value of excess losses (in kilowatts), that are above the quoted
value, times an efficiency cost factor (in dollars per kilowatt). This factor is
specified on the Data Sheet. Losses at Full Load will be used for comparison.

7.3 Notice

The Vendor shall give a minimum of ten (10) days notice prior to transformer
testing to allow the OWNER the option of observing the tests.
