PART 1: THE NATURE OF URANUS
There are many different ways to study astrology. One of the most efficient interpretative
techniques is to treat each planet as a caricature and then to fine-tune its effects using all the
various rules to assess its overall state, the aspects formed, and its position in an angle, in
house, or in a stellium, etc.
The very essence of the planet remains of major importance. The Sun is warm and noble. The
Moon is passive, reactive, and mobile. Mercury is intellectual, detached and unemotional.
Venus is soft and charming. Mars is blunt, efficient, and concrete. And so forth. All these
keywords constitute the structure of the interpretation.
Dramatic turn of events? Unforeseen? Bolts from the blue? Don't look further: Uranus is not far...
In order to easily understand how planets work, one must bear in mind that they belong to
three very distinct categories.
The first category encompasses five personal planets, namely, the Sun, the Moon, Mercury,
Venus, and Mars. They describe the person's most individual and specific traits. Planets in this
category should obviously be the focus of meticulous analysis since the rarer a feature is,
compared to a cross section of the population, the more powerful it is, and the more deeply

really considered as personal planets because their motion is too slow and they share the same
position in the natal chart of huge numbers of people. Nevertheless, Jupiter and Saturn are not
slow enough to be completely cut off from individuals. They are so-called intermediate,
somehow in between collective and personal values. They are said to represent the person's
capacity for social insertion. When Jupiter and Saturn blend well, they indicate that the person
is often well-integrated into his circle, well-accepted by other people, and that the social status
is average or slightly above average. Jupiter favours legal matters and expands the person's
social destiny, whereas Saturn endows with durability and the tenacity needed to succeed.
The third category includes very slow-moving planets, also referred to as trans-saturnian or
collective planets, namely, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Their effects are much more subtle and
usually stem from external events. Since their motion is very slow, their influence is collective
by nature. They have an impact on the person only if they aspect personal points of the natal
chart, or if they are part of a special pattern. It must be kept in mind that these three planets
take respectively 84, 165, and 285 years to travel the Zodiac, and that they stay in the same
sign between seven to twenty years! They influence generations of the same age group and
not individuals as such. This is the reason why the aspects collective planets form among
them are referred to as generational aspects.
Uranus deals with genius, originality, extreme individualisation, difference, the unexpected,
and complete surprise. He is Mercury's higher octave, the planet of the intellect which
conveys dry and unemotional values.
Neptune deals with collective and undifferentiated values such as vagueness, the absence of
limits, atmosphere, dream, imagination, permissiveness, self-indulgence, and the unspeakable.
