Strathmore’s scouts receive boost from community Showtime:

Over the past decade, the
relationship between the 1st
Strathmore Scouts and the
Kinsmen Club of Strathmore
has dwindled.
But that recently changed.
Last weekend the service
group presented the scouts
with a healthy monetary in-
jection in chorus with the an-
nual bottle drive – foreshad-
owing a lucrative year for the
scouts and stronger ties be-
tween the two organizations.
The Kinsmen Club of
Strathmore has served as the
charter sponsor for the 1st
Strathmore Scouts for the
past 25 years, providing nec-
essary funds for equipment
and activities. On Jan. 6, the
club provided the scouts
with nearly one-third of the
annual budget, or $4,000.
“We haven’t been in contact
with the scouts as regular as
we used to until this year…
so we topped them back up
so they have funds to operate
and get equipment that they
need,” said Doug Taylor, di-
rector with the Kinsmen Club
of Strathmore.
“It’s important to give to
everything in the community.
The scouts, we have a long-
term relationship with them
and we want to keep that go-
ing and keep that fresh.”
Part of the funds have al-
ready been used to purchase
a trailer for the transporta-
tion of equipment to camps
and outdoor activities, while
the remainder will be allocat-
ed to crafts and camps. The
1st Strathmore Scouts annu-
al budget typically requires
$15,000. With the recent
donation and their annual
bottle drive, the organization
will continue to provide its

“All these fundraisers are
absolutely critical for us, it’s
how we can keep costs low
for parents and add more
participation from all levels
of income,” said Perry Lewin,
group commissioner for 1st
Strathmore Scouts.
“We’ve really stepped up
our game for community in-
volvement. The kids just love
getting out there and help-
ing, and we do too. It makes
us feel good about being part
of the community, and I think
that we end up seeing better
comeback on our fundraising
when that happens as well.”
Last year’s two bottle drives
averaged $2,500 in profits
each. With a total of $2,800
raised over the weekend,
the scouts are fundraising to
send 26 kids for a sleepover
at the zoo in the spring, and
20 kids to a mad science
camp. Allison Israels, a scout
leader for the 1st Strathmore
Scouts for the last five years,
said these experiences have
a noticeable impact on the
kids.
“I’ve been with some of my
kids for the whole five years,
so I’ve seen them grow up
and change, I’ve seen their
confidence change, I’ve seen
them come out of their shells.
I get to see a different per-
sonality at camp versus when
mom and dad are around so
that’s kind of fun,” she said.
“They definitely grow and
learn. They learn how they
affect their community as
well. That’s a big thing.”
The 1st Strathmore Scouts
is comprised of over 20 bea-
vers – aged five to seven –
over 20 cubs – aged eight to
10 – and four scouts. Despite

Participants and pledges needed to meet fundraising goal

Following Strathmore’s efforts at last year’s Cold-
est Night of the Year fundraiser – where a slow
start, 40 participants and a total of $8,000 fell short
of meeting their objectives – the Strathmore Over-
night Shelter (SOS) is campaigning for a greater
outcome at this year’s country-wide charity walk.
Last year, Strathmore aimed at raising $20,000
through the event in which participants take part
in a two-, five- or 10-kilometre walk. But the or-
ganizers struggled with a short time frame and a
learning curve in hosting the fundraiser for the
first time, and came up $12,000 short of their goal.
Now a year later, organizers hope to more than
double participation and monetary donations by
raising awareness through social media, recruiting
captains to network, and advertising in local busi-
nesses in order to raise funds for the operations of
the overnight shelter.
“We’re a little faster this year although still slow-
er than I would like,” said John Hilton-O’Brien,
president of the SOS board.
“At this point we don’t need any more money
to open the shelter itself. So the money raised is
going to literally go to keeping the lights on as
well as going to the staff and food. I know it’ll
come together in the end, but I’m always worried
about it.”
The shelter requires two full-time staff and near-
ly $90,000 annually for its operations. The project
received $60,000 from the Town of Strathmore,
and community donations collected through vari-
ous means since the initiative’s inception have

On Jan. 8, 2018 at approximately 6:19 p.m. Bas-
sano RCMP, Emergency Medical Services and the
Hussar and Standard Fire Departments responded
to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway
561, approximately three kilometres west of Hus-
sar, Alta.
A westbound car collided head-on with an east-
bound SUV. The driver and lone occupant of the
westbound car, a 16-year-old female, was pro-
nounced deceased at the scene. The driver and
lone occupant of the SUV, a 50-year-old female,
was flown to the Foothills Medical Centre in Cal-
gary by STARS Air Ambulance in critical condition.
Bassano RCMP along with an RCMP Collision
Analyst continue to investigate. All possible con-
tributing factors related to this collision are being
considered.
The identification of the deceased is not being
released at this time.
COLLISION ON RANGE ROAD 233 RESULTS IN
LOSS OF LIFE
On Jan. 8 at 12:55 p.m., Strathmore RCMP re-
sponded to a collision on Range Road 233 at the
intersection of Highway 564. A backhoe travelling
northbound on Range Road 233 was struck by a
GMC Envoy that was also travelling northbound.
The driver of the Envoy, a 73-year-old man, was
transported by ambulance to an area hospital for
treatment. The driver of the backhoe did not sus-
tain any serious injuries.
Emergency crews worked to extract the 72-year-
old female passenger of the Envoy and STARS at-
tended but, tragically, the woman was pronounced
dead at the scene.
An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene
and the cause of the accident remains under in-
vestigation. Investigators do not believe alcohol

with two locations: Kitchener and Toronto. Since

FATAL COLLISION NEAR STRATHMORE
On Monday, Dec. 4 at approximately 12:15 p.m.,
Strathmore RCMP responded to a two-vehicle col-
lision at the intersection of Highway 21 and High-
way 564.
An SUV had been travelling westbound on High-
way 564, approaching the intersection with High-
way 21. When the SUV entered the intersection, it
collided with a pick-up truck that was southbound
on Highway 21.
When emergency crews arrived the lone oc-
cupant of the SUV, a 59-year-old woman from
Calgary, had succumbed to her injuries and was
pronounced deceased at the scene. The two occu-
pants of the truck were transported by ambulance
to a hospital in Calgary with non-life-threatening
injuries.
The investigation continues, but no charges are
anticipated. The name of the deceased woman will
not be released.
SEARCH WARRANT ON SUSPECTED

a rural property resulting in the seizure of 15 ve-
hicles from a suspected chop shop.
On Jan. 8, acting on information received from
the public, the Strathmore RCMP served a search
warrant at a property on Range Road 265, west of
Strathmore. Together with the RCMP Auto Theft
Unit, investigators examined numerous vehicles
found on the property and identified over a dozen
which were stolen or had the vehicle identification
number (VIN) altered.

released from custody on a promise to appear. The
name of the man cannot be released as charges
have yet to be sworn. Investigators are continu-
ing to examine the seized evidence and further
charges are expected.

our communities,” says Staff Sgt. Kevin O’Dwyer,
Strathmore RCMP detachment. “Property crime, in-
cluding stolen vehicles, continues to be a priority
for us. By targeting individuals and groups respon-
sible for these trends, we can reduce their impact
on rural Albertans.”

Maybe they need more signage farther back say-
ing there’s an important intersection ahead and
more warning. But if people aren’t stopping at
stop signs now, putting up more stop signs isn’t
going to do any good.”
Shortly after Rasmussen’s accident, a couple lost
their lives in the same spot. The incidents moti-
vated Kuca to seek action.
She argued that there’s been an increase in traf-
fic on Highway 564 since it was paved from Coun-
try Hills Blvd. all the way to the Saskatchewan bor-
der. With the Wheatland Crossing School located
on the corner of Highway 840 and Highway 561,
she worries about school buses and high school
students in their own vehicles crossing the inter-
section. Therefore, she’s not slowing down with
her lobbying efforts. She has already discussed
the creation of a four-way stop with larger signs
and the red flashing lights on top with Alberta
Transportation. Beyond that, other options would
include a roundabout, a costly option with much
more red tape.
For Kuca, the intersection is a stepping-stone to
addressing a much larger issue.
“To me, this is going to go deeper than this, and
once we get this part fixed I want to push forward
to get our justice system fixed,” she said. “Driving
without insurance is a $2,500 fine, going through
a stop sign and hitting someone and damn near
killing them is a $300 fine? Where does that make
sense? Our system is mucked up and until people
take notice of it, and start fighting, it’s going to stay
the same and it’s never going to change.”
In the meantime, Kuca and Halms will continue
to discuss changes to the intersection with the pro-
vincial government.

On Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 at approximately 4:30
a.m., the suspects arrived in a pickup truck and
backed the truck up to the entrance doors. After
parking the truck, two suspects broke through the
doors to gain entry, then attached a tow strap to
the ATM. They then drove the truck away, pulling
the ATM out through the store entrance.
Both suspects were wearing hoodies, reflective
vests and ball caps, and had their faces covered.

Annual 5 for Life book sale
returns to Strathmore

The organizers of the annual 5 for
Life book sale fundraiser hope to carry
forward the momentum of the event’s
previous success with a larger atten-
dance and increased donations – funds
that are fuelling literacy programs with-
in the community.
Now in its fifth year, the 5 for Life
Community Book Sale mimics the used
book sale founded and hosted in col-
laboration with the Calgary Herald,
Crossroads Market and the Servant’s
Anonymous Society. While on a smaller
scale, 5 for Life Co-Chairperson Chris-
tine Kiemeny adopted the fundraising
style after she attended the prodigious
Calgary-based fundraiser.
In Strathmore, proceeds from the
book sale ensure the implementation
and continuous support of programs
focused on early childhood develop-
ment within the Town of Strathmore
and Wheatland County.
“We’re trying to give them a step up
before they reach school, and zero to
five are the most crucial years in a per-
son’s life because that’s when most of
the brain development is happening,”
said Kiemeny.
“We feel that if we can put money
into those programs and make people
aware of how important it is – don’t
plunk your kid down in front of an
iPad or TV when you could be talking
with them – then it’ll be easier for them
down the road.”
Last year the organization extended
the sale to two days and increased
their profits to $1,500 after $1,000 in
expenses was removed. As the event
has garnered larger turnouts and dona-
tions every year since its inception, this

for Babies – where new parents receive
a brand-new book for their child – in
the past. In partnering with the Parent
Link Centre and the Strathmore Mu-
nicipal Library, programs such as the
1,000 Books and Mother Goose in the
Park have also received support over
the years.
“There is more knowledge of us now
as 5 for Life, the group, so when I go
and bring boxes the people already
know it’s for the book sale. It’s com-
mon knowledge now compared to the
last couple years where people didn’t
know who we were and what we were
about,” said Kiemeny.
“It’s becoming more of a known enti-
ty around town and people are becom-
ing more familiar with what we stand
for and who we help and provide ser-
vices for.”
With only two weeks to go, the non-
profit organization still needs volun-
teers. A total of 25 to 30 volunteers
helped out last year to unload boxes,
set up tables, help with clean up, act as
cashiers and help out throughout the
two-day event.
Donation depots are set up at Home
Hardware, the Parent Link Centre, West-
mount Elementary School, Wheatland
Elementary School, Sacred Heart Acad-
emy, Royal Bank of Canada and Valley
Dental Clinic. Donations of any genre
and age group are accepted including
audio books. Not being accepted are
DVDs, CDs, magazines, encyclopedias,
old health books, textbooks or Readers
Digest.
The 5 for Life Community Book Sale
takes place on Jan. 26 from 2 to 8 p.m.
at the Strathmore Civic Centre, and on
Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All chil-

Strathmore Minor Hockey Association
continues to grow

Just past the halfway mark of another season for
the Strathmore Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) and
they have already started planning next year’s season.
The issues at hand the SMHA is trying to quell are
the same issues it’s been facing for the past few years
– the size of the program.
“At some point we are going to burst at the seams,”
said SMHA President Natalie Haslund.
Two years ago, when Haslund took over, the SMHA
housed 387 players. Last year, they were up to 455 and
currently sit at 487. Next year, Haslund is estimating
another 30 kids will join the program, putting them
near 510, nearly 32 per cent of an increase over three
years.
If the breaking point hasn’t happened yet, it can’t be
that far down the road.
These days, there is only enough ice for every team
from novice to midget to practice once a week in
Strathmore. Teams must travel elsewhere, to Rocky-
ford, Hussar, Standard or Gleichen, to hold their sec-
ond practice of the week.
“And that’s just minor hockey. That doesn’t even be-
gin to account for the [Strathmore Wheatland] Kings,
the double-A’s, ringette teams and figure skating pro-
grams,” said Haslund of the 27 teams in the program.
Meanwhile, novice and atom teams have to share
the ice surface for their practice.
Rosters will soon be maxed out, too. Meaning there
will be less ice time during games and practices for
players to handle the puck and develop their skills.
Ideally, the younger teams operate around 13 to 15
players per team. Maxed out rosters would carry 17
skaters plus two goalies per team, making things ex-
tremely difficult on the novice and atom teams that
already share ice time.
Standard Minor Hockey home to two teams

After nearly a decade-long absence, the Standard Mi-
nor Hockey Association is proudly supporting hockey
again.
“It’s great to see local families back at the rink this
year,” said Standard Hockey Vice-President Jason Gauth-
ier. “For the most part, the arena was being used by out
of town teams like Strathmore and other minor hockey
tournaments, but now the rink is being used by local
kids and it’s a great feeling.”
Standard is now home to one novice team that plays
out of the Central Alberta Hockey League and one Tim-
bits program with enough kids for two teams.
“The numbers have been great this year,” said Gauthier.
“It’s great to see the association back up and running.”
The novice team boasts a roster of 18, while 26 tykes

Haslund and the SMHA are still pushing for a new
rink and recently met mayor Pat Fule about the issue
with the booming population.
“I don’t think he realized how much hockey is grow-
ing in our community,” said Haslund. “Just SMHA alone
right now has enough teams to support a new arena
on their own with a full practice and game schedule.”
Those talks continue, but nothing has been said
about the possibility of a new arena.
But one thing a new arena could bring is a Junior
A hockey club.
The Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey
League held a pair of games in Strathmore towards
the end of 2017 as a way to gauge interest. According
to the team, attendance numbers did not make it fea-
sible for a team to relocate or expand to Strathmore.
A new arena with seating on both sides could be
enough to sway the mind of AJHL commissioner Ryan
Bartoshyk, but there needs to be ground broken on a
new project before those discussions go any further.
The peewee programs were able to raise funds dur-
ing the two Canuck games and were looking forward
to having them return in the new year.
The SMHA has still been able to raise money
through a pair of hosted tournaments this season. The
program is saving up for costly rink dividers that will
be mandatory for novice programs come the 2019-
2020 season.
Tournaments are always a great source of income
for the teams involved and the program as a whole.
After seeing Chestermere land the rights for provin-
cial tournaments, Strathmore did not want to make
things difficult by creating a log jam for hotel book-
ings and other nearby ice rentals.
“We will put in a bid for next year and get some big
tournaments,” said Haslund. “We’re still in the mid-
dle of this season, but we’re already focused on what
next year means.”

Currently, the Coyotes are looking for their first win
of the CAHL season, after starting 0-8 in the Tier 5 West
division.
Blayze Martens leads the Coyotes with five goals and
nine points through eight games, while Liam Barnett and
Tyson Gauthier are tied for second on the team with five
points.
Along with a new home team, Standard also upgraded
their Zamboni for the season and purchased proper rink
dividers for the Timbits program, so they can play more
games on the same sheet of ice.
There are no tournaments planned for either novice or
Timbit programs this year, but Gauthier likes his chances
at hosting a tournament for the novice players next No-
vember.
Hussar Minor
Hockey hosts
split team

The Hussar Arena isn’t home to too
many local teams, but that doesn’t
mean the ice isn’t constantly in use.
The Village of Hussar only has
enough players to dress one bantam
minor hockey team and one ringette
team this winter, which is about the
usual for them.
The Bassano Outlaws graduated to
the bantam level from peewee last sea-
son, and is comprised of players from
both Hussar and Bassano. Each year,
they alternate between Bassano and
Hussar as the “host city,” but they still
split ice time in half. They dress 14
players each game, with half calling
Hussar home and half calling Bassano
home.
“If we don’t work with the Bassano
kids, then we wouldn’t have enough
kids to field our own team,” said ????
Angela Holm. “Our players would have
to head elsewhere for ice time. It’s nice
having a team and seeing local families
at the rink on the weekends.”
Playing in the Central Alberta Hock-
ey League, the Outlaws sit fourth place
out of six teams in the Tier 4 Blue di-
vision and own a 3-5 record. Gabriel
Huckerby leads the Outlaws with nine
goals and six assists in eight games.
Dustin Holm has eight goals and 12
points, and Emmitt Filkohazy rounds
out the Top 3 in scoring with six goals
and nine points.
Coming down the pipe for the Out-
laws is a tournament in Beiseker Jan.
19-21, as they play out the second half
of their season, which concludes the
weekend of Feb. 18. Because of the
team and town size, the Outlaws will
not be competing for any provincial
glory, just the CAHL playoffs in the end
of February.
Hussar is also home to the Hussar
Fireworks, a U12B ringette team that
plays in the Calgary Ringette League.
The Fireworks is primarily comprised
of Hussar players, but they do have a
few from Bassano and Rockyford in
their dressing room.
In their sixth year of existence in
Hussar, the Fireworks, coached by
Grant Gregory, got off to a great start
this season, when they captured their
home tournament title back on Nov. 26.
Grant’s wife, Jeadene, the team man-
ager, is hoping the success in tourney
play continues Feb. 19-21 during the
Esso Golden Ring tournament in Cal-
gary. It is one of the biggest tourna-
ments on the ringette calendar.
Aside from the two local teams, the
Hussar ice opens its doors annually to
tournaments that require extra ice time.
“We are basically at full capacity for
ice time,” said Holm. “There are a lot
of tournaments in Strathmore and even
some Calgary ones that use our ice. It’s
a great way to keep money coming into
the arena.”
Aside from hockey and ringette
games, Hussar is also home for skating
lessons on Monday nights, hosted by
Strathmore’s Sam Miller.
When the ice isn’t booked for games
or lessons, the arena welcomes anyone
to come in for an open skate as a fun
exercise.

WAA enjoys successful season

It was a tough act to follow this year. The 26th
anniversary of the Wheatland Athletic Association
(WAA) doesn’t have the same ring to it, but the
teams are still cruising along at contender speed.
Last season, the 25th season for the WAA, was
a banner year. A milestone year in the franchise
history was achieved and the midget Chiefs cap-
tured the first provincial title for the organization.
“It was a pretty special way to wrap up the year
with the midgets winning the title. We have won
several league titles, but never one like that go-
ing all the way,” said new WAA President Doug
Thurston.
The Chiefs were the best team in the province
by a mile last season, finishing 31-3-2, en route
to the South Central Alberta Hockey League
and provincial title. They also boasted three of
the Top 5 scorers in the league (Isaac Benoit,
Chayse Hnatowich and Riley Romashenko) and
the league’s top goaltender (Ty Tarvyd). All four
players have moved on to different teams and dif-
ferent leagues.
Only 10 of the 22 members from last year’s jug-
gernaut team returned, but the Chiefs still find
themselves atop the league standings. Currently
at 15-7-2, they are eight points behind the Leth-
bridge Hurricanes and have played them strong
this year, going 1-1-1 against the division leaders.
The bantam Warriors finished in the bottom
half of the South Division last season at 12-21-5.
Despite also losing players to the Alberta Minor
Midget Hockey League and Alberta Major Bantam
Hockey League, they continue to be competitive
and are on track to surpass last year’s mark, as
they sit 8-12-2 through 22 games.
The peewee Braves were the talk of the league
with their six-game win streak that highlighted
a strong start. They hit a bit of a rough patch
around the holiday season, but they have already
surpassed last year’s record of 10-22-5 with eight
games remaining.
Strong hockey wasn’t the only thing celebrat-
ed last year. The organization also took the time
to hold a 3-on-3 alumni tournament, welcoming
players from the past back into the program for a
fun weekend of reliving the glory days.
“The alumni event was a ton of fun. We would
love to do it again, but we don’t want to burn
out the idea,” said Thurston. “We’re looking at the
30th year anniversary for another one.”
Something new the program had to juggle with
this season was the ice plant repairs at the Strath-
more Family Centre. The repairs lasted longer
than anticipated, which forced all three programs
to do their tryout camps elsewhere, ranging from
Indus to Drumheller.
“It was very difficult on our ice coordinator, but
at the same time, it was a good way to show off
the program,” said Thurston. “We were able to
draw a couple more kids out because of it. We
might do it again next year because of that.”
The WAA will not be hosting any tournaments
this season. Strathmore is already home to other
hockey tournaments during the same time frame
as the SCAHL playoff tournaments. As a result,
Strathmore’s name will go back into the mix and
higher up the list of towns that can host play-
off tournament next season, during the organiza-
tion’s 27th year.

Even through the changing num-
bers in small-town hockey, the
Rockyford Minor Hockey Associa-
tion still has enough players to field
three teams.
“Every year is different; that’s just
small-town hockey. Some years, we
have teams from tyke all the way up
to midget. This year is not one of
those years,” said Rockyford Minor
Hockey Association President Evan
Koester. “It’s hit or miss.”
Still, Rockyford is home to three
different Roughneck teams that
play in the Central Alberta Hockey
League at the atom, peewee and
bantam level.
The atom Roughnecks are cur-
rently last in the CAHL. Through 10
games in the Tier 4 West division,
they are 0-9-1. Dawson Gregory and
Jace Munchrath lead the team with
seven points each. Behind them is
Aiden Ellis, who has five assists in
nine games.
In the peewee division, the Rough-
necks have a pair of wins in eight
games. Landon Brindle is the only
Roughneck in double figures with
10 goals. Troy Semeniuk is second
on the team with eight goals and 11
points, while Mitchell Nienaber has
nine points in eight games.
The bantam Roughnecks are the
best defensive team in the Tier 4

Blue division. Their 30 goals al-
lowed through eight games is the
fewest by a large margin. Bassano
is the next closest with 46 goals al-
lowed.
Kurtis Seeley has been the main
stopper between the pipes. His .920
save percentage is a big reason be-
hind the leading defensive unit. He
also owns a 2-0-3 record this season.
Brayden Nienaber leads the
Roughnecks with 12 goals and 15
assists in eight games, while Jace
Paget is second on the team with 10
goals and 17 points in four games.
Reid Regehr is the other Roughneck
in double figures with 12 points.

The arena the Roughnecks call
home has not seen any upgrades
this past year, nor are any upgrades
planned. That doesn’t mean it’s not 17/18 GLEICHEN POND HOCKEY - TUESDAY
being used frequently.
The atom program will host an
eight-team tournament this week-
end, wrapping up Jan. 14. The fol-
lowing week, it’s the peewees turn
to host their tournament. That runs
Jan 19-21. The bantam program al-
ready held its annual tournament
earlier this winter.
The rink is constantly being used
by Strathmore hockey teams as they
get squeezed out of the Strathmore
Family Centre. There are also a pair
of ringette teams, a U12 and U10,
that play in the Ringette Alberta
League and call Rockyford Arena
home.

late-game heroics that lifted Team Can-
ada over Team Sweden earlier in the
week at the World Junior Champion-
ship, the Strathmore A Storm nearly
pulled out a comeback of equal pro-
portions during the annual Strathmore
Minor Hockey Association novice tour-
nament Jan. 5-7 at the Strathmore Fam-
ily Centre.
Trailing by one in the dying min-
utes, the Storm put one past the Spruce
Grove goaltender to tie it 4-4 and send
it to a six-man shootout.
Opting to shoot second, the Storm
popped a pair in through their first
five shooters. Needing a goal to send
it to an extra round, the Storm couldn’t
come through.

In the E Division, the Strathmore
Storm Black dusted off the Blackfoot
Chiefs 11-2 in their tourney opener Jan.
5 at Standard Arena. In the semis, the
Storm fell in a close one to the Ches-
termere Lakers White 4-3 in Standard,
dropping down to the B side, where
they met the Taber Oil Kings in the fi-
nale. The Oil Kings proved to be too
powerful, as they calmed the Storm 11-
4.
The Storm B squad was one of those
teams that enjoyed the extra ice time.
After being slighted 2-1 by the White-
mud West program Jan. 5 at the Gold
rink, the Storm bounced back by blast-
ing the Southwest Cougars 6-1 later
that evening in Standard. The Storm ex-
tracted some revenge over Whitemud
Jan. 6 with a simple 3-1 victory. Play-
ing in their bonus game, the Storm was
blanked 12-0 by Red Deer.

the Midnapore Mavericks got the best
of the Storm 8-5 at the Blue Arena. The
Storm wrapped up their tournament on
a positive note by downing the Black-
foot Chiefs 11-5 at the Hussar Arena.
Despite the pool changes, the Storm
out of group D still only appeared in
three games. They dropped their open-
er 6-3 to the Trails West Wolves Jan. 6
at the Blue Arena. Playing in Hussar the
following day, the Storm brushed back
the Red Deer Go Dodge 7-3. In their
tourney finale, the Storm were blanked
4-0 by the Crowfoot Coyotes.
The Storm in pool C was the other
local team to get blanked in its opener,
when they lost 7-0 to the Airdrie Mi-
nor Hockey Association Jan. 5 at the
Gold Arena. Things didn’t get better
from there, as they were on the wrong
end of a 13-3 decision to the McKnight
Snipers. They bounced back Jan. 6 to
keep it close with the Calgary Saints,
but still lost 4-2.

Former Bisons teaming up for the Tigers

The Jan. 10 Western Hockey League trade deadline just
passed with its annual flurry of activity. It was this deadline
three years ago that allowed a pair of former Foothills CFR
Chemicals Bisons teammates to be connected once again.
The Medicine Hat Tigers pulled off a last-minute block-
buster deal that sent 95-point man Cole Sanford to the Re-
gina Pats in exchange for Gary Haden, Brian Williams and
three draft picks.
Haden was wrapping up his first season with the Bisons
when former head coach Sandy Henry broke the news to the
young centre.
One year earlier, the Pats nabbed the Airdrie product in
the ninth round of the 2014 WHL bantam draft.
“It made a big difference to me at the time and gave me a
different outlook on things,” said Haden, who is now thriv-
ing in his third year with the Tigers. “I played in the exhibi-
tion season with Regina that fall and was hoping to make
that team one day.
“It all worked out for the best; I made my debut three
games after the deadline and played four games with the
Tigers during my 16-year-old season.”
Haden cracked the Tigers roster for good last season, but
was still battling for ice time, which isn’t uncommon for
17-year-old players. Still, in 32 games, he scored seven goals.
He took it upon himself to put his body through a rigorous
workout regime in the summer with the hopes of earning a
bigger role at Tigers camp.
“Last summer was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and it’s
paid off huge,” said Haden of his time spent with the White
Collar Boxing Company in Airdrie. “They were the hardest
workouts I’ve ever done. I hated every minute of it, but it
was something I had to do. I’m definitely going back this
year.”
Aside from just the punching bag, Haden was doing all
sorts of body-weight drills and agility drills in the sand. The
hard work paid off and was instantly recognized by the
coaching staff.
“Gary came back after a real good summer. You could tell
he put a lot of work in, improved his foot speed, quickness
and is way faster,” said Tigers Assistant Coach Joe Frazer. “We
always knew he had a really good hockey sense and he was
a good offensive guy; we just needed him to get faster.”
Haden is ripping it up this year with 10 goals and 28 points
through 39 games for the Central Division-leading Tigers. Of
course, it helps playing with a few 30-goal scorers in Max
Gerlach and Jaeger White.
It also helps knowing a familiar face when you are trying
to break into the WHL for the first time.
That was the case for Haden’s former teammate Cole Clay-
ton, who was drafted in the third round by the Tigers in
2015, the same year Haden was acquired by the team.
Clayton’s rookie year with the Bisons overlapped with
Haden’s second season during the 2015-2016 campaign.
That’s when the two developed a friendship that lasts to this
day.
Like Haden, Clayton debuted with the Tigers for four
games that season, but as a 15-year-old. After recording 15
points in 31 regular season games with the Bisons, Clayton
had high hopes of making the WHL as a 16-year-old. Playing
in the Western League at 16 is a challenge on its own; play-
ing in the league as a defenceman at 16 is a completely dif-
ferent animal. There are only 14 16-year-old defencemen this
year who have played in more than half of their respected
team’s games this season, and 16 from last season — less
than one per team.
So, Clayton took a page out of Haden’s book and used it as
motivation over the summer.
“After getting cut last year, I knew that another year in
midget would allow me to get stronger and gain more ex-
perience,” said Clayton. “I was hoping that would help me
make the team and it did. Gary helped me out over the sum-
mer and it allowed me to come into camp confident, and I
think the coaches noticed that.”

Reid Jensen hoisted 27 shots to lead
the Spartans with 20 points. Josh Fili-
pionek went 3-for-3 from downtown
to finish with 13 points, while Daniel
Mulder chipped in with 12 points and
Pierston Kahnapace recorded double
figures with 10 points.
In their second game, the Spartans
were handled by the Millwoods Chris-
