Before starting the tests nominal voltage and current shall be fed to the relay and the values
displayed in the relay shall be verified.

32
1. Operating Value test (Reach test) :
Accuracy: Reach measurement of all the zone elements are expected to the around 10% error.
Procedure: (Using the constant current method) An impedance of value higher than the setting
value is applied to the relay and it is decreased gradually. The Operating value is measured when
the output contact operated. For a particular Zone reach measurement , the Zone time setting
should be set to minimum
Output contacts: The contacts to be assigned are to be referred from the commissioning
drawings. Also ensure that the output contacts are assigned for the particular zone operation

Procedure: The applied impedance is selected less than the zone setting to enable the fault to be
applied, well within the reach (around 50%) for Zone 1 and the time at which relay operates is to
be noted down. For Zone 2 operating time measurement , Zone 3 and Zone 4 time setting should
be set to higher values and accordingly for other Zone operating time measurement. For Zone 2
and Zone 3 operating time measurement, the fault should be applied just outside Zone 1 reach
and Zone 2 reach respectively.
Output contacts: To be referred from the commissioning drawings. Also ensure that the output
contacts are assigned for the particular zone operation.

PSB contact (refer Commissioning drawings):
Procedure:
a) Connect corresponding current and voltage contacts of the relay to the Omicron test kit
available.
b) Open Test Universe Software and Associate the test kit with the Software using
‘Test Kit Association’ option available on the menu.
c) Select Ramping from the CMC menu for testing Power Swing Blocking.
d) Set initial voltage to nominal values and set constant current to nominal values of 1A.

35
e) Decrease voltage gradually from nominal value to 1 volt in steps of -10mV, time in steps
of 1msec and keeping current constant.
f) Set current angle to line angle and balance the three phases. Vary the current angle with
respect to the decreasing voltage to obtain a power swing trajectory.
g) Run the test and observe relay response to its respective settings.
Observation:

4. SOTF:
SOTF contact (refer Commissioning drawings):
Digital input (breaker closed condition):
Procedure:
The digital input (Applying 110/220V DC) corresponding to breaker closed condition is
given to the relay. Apply a zone2 AN fault. Observe that the relay operates on SOTF. The
operating time should be less than 40 – 50 msec.
Observation:

5. Permissible Under Reach (PUR) scheme:

In PUR scheme (to clear end zone fault) zone 1 element of the remote end is used to send
signal to the local end. Operation of Zone 2 element along with signal receive at the local end
gives instant tripping.
a. Signal send circuit test:
Procedure:
Apply zone 1 fault and check operation of signal send contact and carrier Boost contact
(refer commissioning drawings) . Also confirm for non operation of the same contacts for
zone2 fault.
Result: Yes\No
a) Connect Multi meter across Carrier Send Contacts of the Relay as per Relay Scheme in
DC Mode. 220V will appear on Multi meter.
b) Give Zone I Fault through Test Kit. See the Voltage in the Multi meter, it will show Zero
Voltage at the time fault momentarily.

36
b. Signal receive circuit test:
Procedure:
To check the receive circuit, energize ‘carrier in service’ OPTO by applying rated volts
across digital input terminals (refer commissioning drawings). Zone 2 timer is set around 1 sec.
On applying a zone 2 fault without ‘Carrier Receive’ signal the relay operates after a time
delay. The carrier receive OPTO is energized by applying rated volts across opto input
terminals and under this condition the above zone 2 fault is cleared instantly with ‘Aided Trip’
LED indication.
Result: Yes/No
6. VT supervision check:
a) Fuse fail condition, apply 3 phase voltage is reduce one of the phase voltage to
zero volt for long enough time for fuse fail function of relay to pick up. Simulate an earth fault
on same phase to verify that fuse fail function BLOCK the trip signal. VT Fuse fail Alarm should
come on the front LEDs (if configured) and trip should be blocked

7. Remarks are required to be mentioned as given:

Results are within claimed limits /as required:

8. Status of the Relay is to be mentioned as given:

Healthy / Needs to be replaced:

9. Trending data is to be mentioned:

Trending performance data can provide an understanding of relay performance over
time. Past relay maintenance and test data can be used to determine whether relay test intervals
are appropriate. The relay that may exhibit large drift requires checking more frequently. The
relay may be very stable and require checking less frequently. Particularly stable relays may
have their test interval extended if an analysis of past test performance indicates that they are
far from drift.

3. Power Swing Blocking:

Relay setting:
Delay 1 Reset ( In Power Swing Detection setting) =
Blocking ( In Individual Phase Distance setting ) =

Procedure:
1) For testing power swing, initially set an Impedance value on the load area depending on
the setting inside the relay.
2) Gradually reduce the Impedance setting so that, a power swing which enters to the fault
area from the load area is simulated.

45
3) Then increase the Impedance value back again to the load area which simulates a power
swing which goes off.
4) With ‘ DIST BLK ‘ setting for all Zones, simulate the steps 1) to 3) and observe that
power swing is blocked.
5) Set ‘Delay 1 Reset’ to 5 seconds.
6) Simulate a fault which persists for less than 5 seconds, just after repeating steps 1) to 3)
and observe that Power Swing Blocking is latched for the specified time delay in
‘Delay 1 Reset’.
7) Reduce ‘Delay 1 Reset’ time delay to 0 seconds and apply a fault just after Power swing,
and observe relay tripping for the fault after Power Swing Blocking.

DC Mode. 220V will appear on Multi meter.
b) Give Zone I Fault through Test Kit. See the Voltage in the Multi meter, it will show Zero
Voltage at the time fault momentarily.

Fuse fail condition, apply 3 phase voltage is reduce one of the phase voltage to zero volt for long
enough time for fuse fail function of relay to pick up. Simulate an earth fault on same phase to
verify that fuse fail functionBLOCK the trip signal.VT Fuse fail Alarm should come on the front

Before starting the tests nominal voltage and current shall be fed to the relay and the values
displayed in the relay shall be verified.

2. Operating time test:

Procedure: The applied impedance is selected less than the zone setting to enable the fault to be
applied, well within the reach (around 50%) for Zone 1 and the time at which relay operates is to
be noted down. For Zone 2 operating time measurement , Zone 3 and Zone 4 time setting should
be set to higher values and accordingly for other Zone operating time measurement. For Zone 2
and Zone 3 operating time measurement , the fault should be applied just outside Zone 1 reach
and Zone 2 reach respectively
Output contacts: To be referred from the commissioning drawings. Also ensure that the output
contacts are assigned for the particular zone operation

3. Power Swing Blocking:

Relay setting:(Refer setting ranges)
PSBZones =
PSB time =
Delta R =
Delta X =

Procedure:
Procedure:
a) Set initial voltage to 63.5* V at nominal balanced angle.
b) Set constant current to nominal values of 1A and current angle is initially set to 0o (Load
angle).
c) Voltage magnitude is reduced in steps of -10 mV from 63.5* v to 10* V with (dt=1.0
millisecond) and current angle is ramped from 0oto -500in steps of 0.01o.
d) This simulates power oscillation/Swing trajectory to the relay and observe that PSB
element picks up.
 Distance relay pick up indication to be observed on the relay front panel.
e) With ‘ All Zones Blocked( 111111) ‘ setting , simulate Power Swing to enter from Load
area to protection zones
 Observe that the PSB is initiated by LED indication on the front panel.
 Reduce time delay (68 Trip Delay) and Observe relay trip.

57
f) Simulate power swing by changing the lower voltage value from 10 V to a lesser values
( 5V, 1V ) so that the swing enters inner zones. Change in angle remains the same.
Observe PSB indication on the relay.
g) Now With ‘Z3 Unblock’(101111) repeat steps a) to c) and observe that the relay trips in
Zone 3. Observe LED on the front panel.
* The voltage ramping from 63.5 V to 10 V can be changed accordingly such that the
power swing enters different Zones depending on the Zone setting inside the relay.
Observation:
4. SOTF:
SOTF contact (refer Commissioning drawings):
Digital input (breaker closed condition):
Procedure: The digital input (Applying 110/220V DC) corresponding to breaker closed
condition is given to the relay. Apply a zone2 AN fault. Observe that the relay operates on
SOTF. The operating time should be less than 40 – 50 msec.
To check the SOTF feature of the relay, first confirm, whether SOTF feature is enabled.
Observation:
5. PermissiveUnder Reach (PUR) scheme:
In PUR scheme (to clear end zone fault) zone 1 element of the remote end is used to send
signal to the local end. Operation of Zone 2 element along with signal receive at the local end
gives instant tripping.
a. Signal send circuit test:
Procedure:
Apply zone 1 fault and check operation of signal send contact (VG1 – VG2) and carrier
Boost contact(VG3 – VG4) (refer Commissioning drawings). Also confirm for non operation
of the same contacts for zone2 fault.
Result: Yes\No
h) Connect Multi meter across Carrier Send Contacts of the Relay as per Relay Scheme in
DCMode. 220V will appear on Multi meter.
i) Give Zone I Fault through Test Kit.See the Voltage in the Multi meter, it will show Zero
Voltage at the time fault momentarily.
b. Signal receive circuit test:
Procedure:

58
To check the receive circuit, energize ‘carrier in service’ OPTO by applying rated volts
across ZA3 – ZA4. Zone 2 timer is set around 1 sec. On applying a zone 2 fault without
‘Carrier Receive’ signal the relay operates after a time delay. The carrier receive OPTO is
energized by applying rated volts across ZA1 – ZA2 and under this condition the above
zone 2 fault is cleared instantly with ‘Aided Trip’ LED indication.
Result: Yes/No

6. VT supervision check:
Fuse fail condition, apply 3 phase voltage is reduce one of the phase voltage to zero volt for long
enough time for fuse fail function of relay to pick up. Simulate an earth fault on same phase to
verify that fuse fail functionBLOCK the trip signal.VT Fuse fail Alarm should come on the front
LEDs (if configured) and trip should be blocked.

7. DC Power up check:
a. Before applying DC voltage check
Watch Dog contact J11 – J12 Close

J13 – J14 Open

b. Apply 220V DC to the relay and observe the following:

1. All LEDs with flash
2. On LCD see message “SRAM OK”
c. Check Watch Dog contact J11 – J12 Open

J13 – J14Close

d. Check Voltage (48 volts) J7 – J9  48 Volts

7.0 Secondary injection tests:
Applied Auxiliary Voltage: 220 VDC

Applied constant current: 2 A AC

Relay setting: (Refer setting ranges and option logics)
For example
Power Swing Operating Mode = All Zones Blocked
68 Trip Delay after Power Swing Blocking = 5 seconds

106
Procedure:
a) Set initial voltage to 63.5* V at nominal balanced angle.
b) Set constant current to nominal values of 1A and current angle is initially set to 0o (Load
angle).
c) Voltage magnitude is reduced in steps of -10 mV from 63.5* v to 10* V with (dt=1.0
millisecond) and current angle is ramped from 0o to -500 in steps of 0.01o.
d) This simulates power oscillation/Swing trajectory to the relay and observe that PSB
element picks up.
 Distance relay pick up indication to be observed on the relay front panel.
e) With ‘ All Zones Blocked ‘ setting , simulate Power Swing to enter from Load area to
protection zones
 Observe that the PSB is initiated by LED indication on the front panel.
 Reduce time delay (68 Trip Delay) and Observe relay trip.
f) Simulate power swing by changing the lower voltage value from 10 V to a lesser values
( 5V, 1V ) so that the swing enters inner zones. Change in angle remains the same.
Observe PSB indication on the relay.
g) Now With ‘Z1, Z1B, Z2 Block’ repeat steps a) to c) and observe that the relay trips in

107
5. Permissible Under Reach (PUR) scheme:
In PUR scheme (to clear end zone fault) zone 1 element of the remote end is used to send signal
to the local end. Operation of Zone 2 element along with signal receive at the local end gives
instant tripping.
a. Signal send circuit test:
Procedure:
Apply zone 1 fault and check operation of signal send contact (VG1 – VG2) and
carrier Boost contact (VG3 – VG4) (refer Commissioning drawings). Also confirm for
non operation of the same contacts for zone2 fault.
Voltage at the time fault momentarily.
b. Signal receive circuit test:
Procedure:
To check the receive circuit, energize ‘carrier in service’ OPTO by applying rated volts
across ZA3 – ZA4. Zone 2 timer is set around 1 sec. On applying a zone 2 fault without ‘Carrier
Receive’ signal the relay operates after a time delay. The carrier receive OPTO is energized by
applying rated volts across ZA1 – ZA2 and under this condition the above zone 2 fault is cleared
instantly with ‘Aided Trip’ LED indication.
Result: Yes/No

6. VT supervision check:
Fuse fail condition, apply 3 phase voltage is reduce one of the phase voltage to zero volt for
long enough time for fuse fail function of relay to pick up. Simulate an earth fault on same phase
to verify that fuse fail function BLOCK the trip signal. VT Fuse fail Alarm should come on the
front LEDs (if configured) and trip should be blocked.

7.2 Directional test:

 The distance relay must be connected to the measuring transformer and the load current
must exceed 20% of rated current.
 The direction of the power transmitted must be known
 The start zone is made directional by a programming switch on the measuring and
indicating unit.
 Start is then simulated with the “functional test”.
 The distance relay indicates trip or blocking depending on the power direction after the
set time T4 for the start zone.
 The trip pulse to the circuit breaker is automatically blocked during this test.
 If, when testing, the operating direction of the relay is wrong, it should be reversed.

Trending data is to be mentioned:

Trending performance data can provide an understanding of relay performance over time.
Past relay maintenance and test data can be used to determine whether relay test intervals are
appropriate. The relay that may exhibit large drift requires checking more frequently. The relay
may be very stable and require checking less frequently. Particularly stable relays may have their
test interval extended if an analysis of past test performance indicates that they are far from drift.
