TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

TERMS DEFINITION

Ignition The action of setting something on fire or starting to burn.

Specific gravity is a dimensionless quantity; that is, it is not
expressed in units. To find the Sp. Gr. of a solid or liquid, you must

know its density in kilograms per meter cubed or in grams per

centimeter cubed. Then, divide this density by the density of pure
water in the same units.
API gravity express the gravity or density for liquid petroleum
products. API is devised jointly by the American Petroleum Institute

and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The
measuring scale is calibrated in terms of degrees API.

1. PURPOSE:

To provide necessary guidelines for safe Testing of LPG Specific Gravity - ASTM
D-1298-85 as such should be used for the reference all the time.

2. SCOPE:

This control procedure outlines equipment detailed summaries along with testing
guidelines for Testing of LPG. Also the hazards involved and, tools required in
performing this task safely.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:

Plant Manager and Deputy Plant Manager shall responsible for:

 To ensure that concerned Lab Chemist/ Operation Engineer comply with

the procedures as described herein.

Operation Engineer shall be responsible for:

 To ensure that all the concerned Lab Chemist comply with the
procedures as described herein.

Lab Chemist shall be responsible for:

 To ensure that they have all the knowledge for Testing of LPG Specific

4. POTENTIAL HAZARDS:

 Ignition source
 Inhalation

5. GENERAL SAFETY:

5.1 Pre Job Safety Meeting:

To ensure safe Testing of Testing of LPG Specific Gravity - ASTM D-1298-85,

PJSM should be held to identify any potential hazards that may occur during
the charging procedure.

5.2 Permit to Work Requirements:

No any work permit is required before starting the procedure.

5.3 Isolation Required:

No any isolation is required.

6. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR PROCEDURE:

 Hand gloves
 Mandatory PPEs
 Radio for communication with CCR
 Refer to MSDS sheet
 Safety goggles

7. PROCEDURE:

 Fill a clean LPG specific gravity apparatus with sample, without splashing, to
avoid the formation of air bubbles, and to reduce the evaporation of lower
boiling constituents of volatile samples.
 Bring it at constant required temperature of 60°F.

 Note the reading form the scale of hydrometer.

Calculation for Specific Gravity:

Specific Gravity is reported @ 60/60°F
Gravity @ 60/60°F = (Obs. Temperature - 600F) X Correction Factor + Obs.
Gravity
API Gravity = (141.5/ Sp. Gr. @60/60°F) – 131.5

 Refer ASTM D-1298-85 for this procedure.

8. PROCEDURE CLOSE-OUT:

 Note the reading.

 Contact CCR to let them know job is completed.

9. TRAINING & EVALUATION:

For effective implementation of this procedure:

 Plant Manager/ Deputy Plant Manager are responsible to arrange trainings on

the basis of training needs.

 Plant Manager/ Deputy Plant Manager will evaluate the overall effectiveness
of this program in Hala Gas Processing Plant on annual basis.
