AE231 Thermodynamics

Answer for Quiz 4 (October 27, 2014)

Question

Assume that 2kg of air is heated in a constant volume and constant pressure processes. (For air :

C v =0.718kJ/kg.K, C p =1.005kJ/kg.K, R=0.287kJ/kg.K)

• a) Calculate the internal energy and enthalpy changes in each process. (60p.)

• b) Calculate the heat transfers (Q 1 and Q 2 ) during these processes. (40p.)

Solution:

• a) In the first process, the volume of system is constant. In the second process, the pressure of system

is constant. In both processes, the internal an enthalpy changes can be calculated by the following

relations:

Internal energy change:

U=

mC

v

T

Enthalpy change:

H=

p

U= 2* 0.718*10= 14.36kJ

H= 2*1.005*10= 20.1kJ

• a) From the first law of thermodynamics.

In the second process, the pressure is constant, and there is only boundary work. Hence the heat transfer during the constant volume process can be calculated as:
