1
PROBLEM STATEMENT

Applied loading at top face = 1.E+3 N/mm2

The bottom face is fixed at bottom
Plate dimension: 100 x 100 mm
Plate thickness = 1 mm
a = 2 mm
b = 1 mm
Plane stress elements is used to model the plate

ANALYSIS:

Material used is Steel

Young's modulus of elasticity(E) = 2.E+11 N/m²
Poisson ratio(v) = 0.3
Density(ρ) = 7800 Kg/m³

2
MESHING:

The partition as shown was used to achieve graded meshing. The seeds
for meshing were done using single biasing which resulted in fine mesh
near the hole. A structured meshing was done using the seeding
provided from edge seeding.
The bias factor adopted was 500
Total number of elements generated = 105000

THEORETICAL STRESS VALUE:

The theoretical value of maximum stress developed due to elliptical hole
is given by:
𝑎
𝜎 = 𝜎𝑜 (1 + 2 )
𝑏
0.002
= 1. 𝐸 + 9 (1 + 2 )
0.001
= 5.E+9 N/m2

3
CONVERGENCE ANALYSIS:

We used single bias picking and the number of elements in the Local seed
is varied and accordingly a Bias ratio has been assumed.

CONVERGENCE SOLUTION:

Maximum stress obtained = 4.995x 109 N/m2

Maximum stress (Theoretical) = 5E+9 N/m2

Value of stress at (a,0) = 4.9944 x 109 N/m2

Value of stress at (-a,0) = 4.9947 x 109 N/m2
Value of stress at (0,b) = -9.8737 x 108N/m2
Value of stress at (0,-b) = -9.8533 x 108 N/m2

RESULTS:

Stresses at (-a, 0)

Stresses at (a, 0)

5
Stresses at (0, b)

Stresses at (0,-b)

obtained through numerical experiment.

THEORETICAL VALUE NUMERICAL VALUE

5x 109 N/m2 4.995x 109 N/m2

This small difference may arise due to lesser degree of fineness of

meshing.
