Re: 2017-18 School Year - AIM Center-based Program

Thank you very much for sharing your child with us here at Eastern Carver County Schools. It has
been an amazing year seeing their growth and attainment of new skills. We are proud of our AIM
program and other four center-based programs in the district, serving almost 100 students K-12! As
you have heard our district is growing at a rapid pace. The approval of the 2015 referendum has
allowed us to build a new elementary school in Carver, add classroom space to Clover Ridge and
Victoria elementary schools, among other projects. A new school and additional expansions means the
district must consider new attendance boundaries.

As you are aware, your child’s IEP team determined his/her placement is within a district center-
based program due to their educational needs and specialized education services. Currently, the
location of your child’s center-based program has been at Chanhassen Elementary School. Effective for
the 2017-2018 school year the location of the AIM program will be Carver Elementary School (our
brand new school opening this fall); which is currently still under construction and located at 1717
Ironwood Drive, Carver, MN 55315. As your child will be transitioning to the new building for fall they
will be automatically enrolled and you do not need to complete any additional paperwork or sign
consent for this change. The district would like to clarify with you that your child’s placement is not
changing. The location of the program will be changing. The district is able to make this program move
based on needs of the district, and this change does not require your written or verbal agreement.
Your child’s placement and services will remain the same and your child’s current programming, as
outlined in his/her IEP will continue to be provided. Your child will also continue to receive
transportation to the new location, as it has been stated from their IEP.
We are excited to be able to intentionally build and design the new AIM program environment from
the ground up. There are many advantages to this move! First, there will be two (2) full-time special
education center-based AIM teachers collaborating around the needs of the students and program, a
resource special education team of at least three (3) full-time teachers and additional support services
staff in close proximity of the AIM program classrooms. Related service providers may also specialize in
the needs of the core group of students. The programs will also share a larger, specially designed, state
of the art sensory room. Given two (2) center-based classrooms, the students will have opportunities
to move between classrooms for different classes and experiences. Students will also continue to be
enrolled and participate in their general education, typical grade level classroom to the extent
described in their IEP. Currently, special education IEP Managers have not been determined for the
AIM programs as the district is working on making final decisions for the 2017-2018 school year. Once
the district has made a determination, you will receive this communication, which will be prior to the
start of the school year.

For our next steps, your child’s current IEP Manager or Ben Hullerus, Specialized Education Services
Coordinator will be calling you by January 31st to follow-up and further discuss this change. Laura
Pingry-Kile, Erin Copeland, Greg Lange or June Johnson are also available to answer questions. This
spring, transition plans will be made to support the students, including plans for a social story to be
introduced before the last day of school. This may also be sent home so you are able to continue the
discussion over the summer. If your child attends ESY, the social story will be addressed and continued
there. On-site tours will be offered to you prior to school starting in the fall. We feel it will be
important for students to spend some time in the classroom/program, meet the staff, and feel ready for
the first day of the school year! We look forward to working in collaboration with you throughout the
process.

Sincerely,

Laura Pingry-Kile Greg Lange
