EXAMINATION FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING

ACADEMIC SESSION 2007/2008: SEMESTER 2

KMEE1168: ENGINEERING MECHANICS

APRIL 2008 TIME: 2.00 HOURS

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES:

Answer 4 out of 5 questions.

Answer for each question must be given entirely in Bahasa Malaysia or in English.
Candidates are not allowed to use both languages in answering each question.

(This question paper consists of SIX (5) questions on FOUR (4) printed pages)
KMEE1168/02
Question 1

By using method of joints, determine the force in each member of the loaded truss
in Figure Q1. Make use of the symmetry of the truss and of the loading.

Question 2

Plot the shear and moment diagrams for the beam loaded with both the distributed
and point loads in Figure Q2. What are the values of the shear and moment as x =
6m? Determine the maximum bending moment.

Question 3

The 2-kg collar as in Figure Q3 is released from rest at A and slides down the
inclined fixed rod in the vertical plane. The coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.4.
Calculate (a) the velocity v of the collar as it strikes the spring and (b) the maximum
deflection x of the spring.

Question 4

The hydraulic cylinder in Figure Q4 imparts to point B which causes link OA to rotate.
For the instant shown where OA is vertical and AB is horizontal, the velocity vB of pin
B is 4 m/s and is increasing at a rate of 20 m/s2. For this position determine the
angular acceleration of OA.

Question 5

The 45-kg crate is pulled up the inclined surface by the winch. The coefficient of
kinetic friction between the crate and the surface is µk = 0.4. The moment of inertia of
the drum on which the cable is being wound is IA = 4 kgm2. The crate starts from
rest, and the motor exerts a constant couple M = 50 Nm on the drum. Use Newton
2nd Law and the Principle of Work and Energy to determine the magnitude of the
velocity of the crate when it has moved 1 m.
