College entrance essay

Once I started attending Schroder elementary school my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Borson
saw me struggling with the academic material. As soon as she saw me struggling significantly,
she knew to talk to me and my parents so we can take action on improving my academic
abilities as well as learning how to learn.

she discussed my struggles to my parents and proactively worked on my behalf to

become successful in life by getting me into and IEP program with a 504-accommodation plan
as well as putting me through speech classes in order to help me succeed academically and
reach my life goals.

The school district then granted my admissions. I started going to my speech classes
twice a week. In 5th grade I started getting help in my math and English classes. At first, I felt
inferior compared to the other students as well as being ashamed because I thought I could
never be that smart I would always stay in special education.

By the time it was my freshman year in high school I felt even more inferior than the
other students as well as embarrassed to advocate for myself to receive my IEP
accommodations. Second semester of my sophomore year I knew I needed to finish my year
out strong in order to get my grades up so I started using my accommodations more by going in
a different location to take a test whereas before I was only using that room to take my final
exams or significantly long tests.

During that summer, I went to my step sister’s graduation party and saw all the awards
and scholarship money she was receiving as well as getting the Magna and Summa cum Laude
awards; of course, I was happy for her I also began to feel envious of her and I wanted to
receive some type of scholarship as well as raising my grades significantly. I cried a little after
the party but I knew it was my call for action to become a successful woman.

During my junior year of high school, I wanted to take a rigorous course that I knew
would contain dedication. Since I have a true passion for medicine and have the desire to
become a Dermatologist or pediatric doctor, I chose Anatomy and Physiology. As soon as we
got to the Histology unit we started doing lab practical’s. I bombed the first one and received an
E on the exam and I knew for a fact I would’ve gotten an A if I gotten more than 60s on each
question and 10 seconds to go back to each station and check our answers. So, after I saw my
grade on this practical I advocated for myself and asked my teacher if I could study in the back
room during the hour of the practical and come in after school to take the practical; since my
IEP / 504 plan allows for me to have extended time on exams she happily granted my wish. The
next histology lab practical we had was on different bone cells such as cortical bone (Impacted
bone tissue) and the Cancellous bone (spongy bone). I was so Motivated to nail this practical so
when I walked in after school to take the practical I ended up getting an A; this is when I
became extremely appreciative of my IEP.

Now that I realized I won’t have these special accommodations at your University and
have to be dependent on myself to myself to get good grades without any special help from my
professors, I plan on using all the skills and work ethics as well as knowing what I should do if I
am struggling with a topic in class in order to be able to succeed and stand out at your
university.
