ALTERNATORS
Q1 Find the no-load phase & line voltage of a star-connected 3-phase, 6-pole alternator
this runs at 1200rpm, having flux per pole of 0.1Wb sinusoidally distributed .Its
stator has 54 slots having double layer winding. Each coil has 8 turns and the coil
is chorded by 1 slot.

Q2 The stator of a 3-phase, 16-pole alternator has 144 slots & there are 4 conductors per
slot connected in two layers & the conductors of each phase are connected in series.
If the speed of the alternator is 375r.p.m, calculate the e.m.f. induced per phase.
Resultant flux in the air-gap is 0.05 weber per pole sinusoidally distributed.
Assume the coil span at 150 degree electrical.
Q3 A 3-phase, star-connected alternator supplies a load of 10 MW at p.f. 0.85 lagging
& at 11kV (terminal voltage). Its resistance is 0.1 ohm per phase and synchronous
reactance 0.66 ohm per phase. Calculate the line value of e.m.f. generated.

Q4 A 3-phase star-connected alternator is rated at 16000 kVA, 13,500 V. The armature


resistance and synchronous reactance are 1.5 ohm & 30 ohm respectively per phase
Calculate the percentage regulation for a load of 1280 kW at 0.8 leading power
factor
Q5 A 3-phase, 10-kVa, 400-V, 50-Hz, Y-connected alternator supplies the roted load at
0.8 p.f. lag. If armature resistance is 0.5 ohm & synchronous reactance is 10 ohm,
find the power angle and voltage regulation.

SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR

Q1 A 75-kW, 3-phase, Y-connected, 50 Hz, 440-V cylindrical rotor synchronous motor


operate at rated condition with 0.8 p.f. leading. The motor efficiency excluding
field & stator losses, is 95 % and Xs = 2.5 ohm. Calculate, a) mechanical power
developed, b) armature current, c) back e.m.f., d) power angle, e) maximum or
pull-out torque of motor
Q2 The input to an 11000-V, 3- phase, and star-connected synchronous motor is 60 A.
The ffective resistance & synchronous reactance per phase are respectively 1ohm and
30 ohm. Find, a) the power supplied to the motor, b) mechanical power developed,
c) induced e.m.f. for a power factor of 0.8 leading.

Q3 A 3-phase, 6,600-volts, 50-Hz, star-connected synchronous motor takes50 A current. The


resistance & synchronous reactance per phase are 1ohm & 20 ohm respectively.
Find the power supplied to the motor and induced e.m.f. for a power factor of
a) 0.8 lagging , b) 0.8 leading

Q4 A 1,000-kVA, 3- phase, star-connected synchronous motor has an armature


resistance & reactance per phase of 3.5 ohm & 40 ohm respectively. Determine
the induced e.m.f. & angular retardation of the rotor when fully loaded
a) unity p.f., b) 0.8 p.f lagging , c) 0.8 p.f. leading.
