Dr. Wendy van Gent

Teacher Candidate Name: Catherine Leber

Grade Level: 7th

Subject: Math

Date: 11/20/17

State Standard(s):
7.NS.1b Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative
direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a
sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.
7.NS.1c Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive inverse, p – q = p + (–q).
Show that the distance between two rational numbers on the number line is the absolute value of
their difference, and apply this principle in real-world contexts.

Rationale:
Explain in a short paragraph why you will be teaching this lesson using music and/or movement. Use the information from your textbook to
help prepare this paragraph.

Along with the book we had for this class, I found multiple sources that suggest that using
music in a general education classroom can add to student learning in not only music but also
that subject in general. According to Chee-Hoo Lum, when teachers incorporated children’s
musical interests into the classroom, the students were able to go farther into the topics that
they were taught about than just the surface level that straight explicit instruction is able to
provide.

Presentation Steps:

1. I will start the lesson by reviewing what we learned last class period about adding a
negative number and how it is essentially the same as subtracting that number.
2. Then, we will move into what absolute value is and how it is represented. Then, I will
pull up the video.
3. I will show the students the whole video as it is a good review for what we just learned
before it has a part where it explains absolute value.
a. I will stop the video after different math expressions are explained to have the
students work out the problems on their paper and number lines.
4. When the song gets to the absolute value part, I will pause the video to have the
students recite with me how we figure out absolute value (take away the sign).
5. We will finish the lesson with the students doing a worksheet all together. The
worksheet will be on the Smartboard where the students will come up one at a time so
that they can show their work on the board. This worksheet will include absolute value
as well as adding and subtracting with absolute value. The main focus will be on the
signs of the numbers.

Reflection (to be submitted after your presentation)

The lesson reflection should be a tool to improve your teaching by reflecting on what you have done in your teaching that you
can improve, or that you do well, that might be included in further lessons. Please reflect on the lesson (and/or unit) you taught
in paragraph format including the following: overall view of the lesson; what went well; what problems were encountered;
how can you improve your planning; how can you improve the students’ learning; and how can you improve your
presentation. Feel free to include other items you feel are important.
