SEMESTER PERTAMA
TAHUN AKADEMIK 2013/2014
MID-SEMESTER EXAMINATION
Instructions to candidates:
1. Please write your student ID, section and table number on the answer script.
2. There are 3 questions. Answer ALL questions.
3. Do not bring in unwarranted materials except those that are allowed.
(a) Discuss why the baseband signal cannot be transmitted directly at its original frequency.
Suggest a strategy for the baseband signal to be transmitted over the 3G network.
[2 mark]
(b) Calculate the antenna length if half wave dipole is used.
[2 mark]
(c) If the signal is transmitted at 50W and the noise power is 2W, determine the channel
capacity. Assume the bandwidth is 200 kHz.
[2 mark]
(d) The signal travels along 100km distance with power loss of 0.2dB per kilometer.
Determine the received signal in dB and Watt.
[2 marks]
(e) Suggest a suitable technique to improve the channel capacity to achieve up to 5Mbps.
Justify your answer by calculations.
[2 marks]

Frequency
fc = 1MHz
a) Figure 1 shows the power spectrum of a DSBFC AM signal with BW = 200 kHz. Total
transmitted power is PTOTAL = 225 W with efficiency, E = 11.11%. Assume the resistance
is 1Ω.
(ii) The system above is then modified to obtain an output with efficiency equal to
100%. Draw the transmitter block diagram to achieve this intended output. (Label
the component and indicate clearly the frequency spectrum at each stage).
[6 marks]
(iii) Calculate the percentage saving for power and bandwidth of this new setup.
[2 marks]
(iv) Determine the range of image frequency if the system using high side injection.
