CV2 517 E: DESIGN OF BRIDGES MAIN ASSIGNMENT

Due date: 22nd December 2017
A highway bridge is to be designed and constructed in a location with the following data:
A. General site conditions:
i. The bridge deck is to have a one span of 21m center to center of the bearings,
crossing an highway
ii. The bridge is to have 12m wide deck comprising of 8m wide carriageway and
two equal footpaths on both sides
iii. The skewness of the bridge due to the proposed location is 60.
B. Ground investigation information:
i. Suitable founding strata located 8m below the proposed road level
ii. The strata is composed of cohesionless soil having an angle of shearing
resistance, ɸ = 300 and safe bearing capacity of 300kN/m2
iii. The backfill material with an effective angle of internal friction, ɸ’ = 300 and
density γ = 19kN/m3
C. Loading conditions: The bridge is to carry 100mm concrete deck surfacing, structural
solid reinforced concrete deck, HA live load udl of 20kN/m2, knife edge load of 120kN,
45 units of HB load and temperature effects.

Using concrete class C32/40 (fc = 40N/mm2), reinforced steel with fy = 460N/mm2 carryout
the following:

a) Preliminary design of the bridge (structural layout, initial sizing of the bridge parts,
sketch the longitudinal and cross-sectional profiles of the bridge etc.)
b) Calculate the loading and load combinations based on BS 5400
c) Design the simply supported bridge deck, the abutment, and the foundation for the
bridge based on BS 5400 and other supporting codes
d) Detail the bridge deck, abutment and the foundation.

Note: (1) Discussion is allowed amongst students. However, each student should hand-in
distinct report containing individual’s work. Similar reports will NOT be
considered.

(2) Adhere with the deadline indicated above
