FRSM 1000: Group Oral Presentation (Fall 2017)

For this assignment, you will work in groups of 5 to develop an oral presentation that
chooses one category/area/type of citizenship and responds to the following question:
What does this type of citizenship look like? The goal of this presentation is to
demonstrate how a particular citizenship is performed, behaved, or presented to the
public. While it’s certainly true that we can’t always accurately identify a citizen by
her/his behavior, citizens frequently feel the pressure or need to perform their identities as
citizens within particular groups.

Guidelines/Requirements
1. 5-7 minute group presentation that involves every member equally in
speaking/delivery roles. Polished, rehearsed delivery: be sure you practice several
times before the actual presentation and time yourself to make sure you’re within
5-7 minute range.
2. Your presentation must focus on one citizenship category (e.g. New Orleans,
Xavier, U.S., other small cultural citizenship groups) and address the following
question: What does this type of citizenship look like?
3. You may use a wide variety of presentation styles, so long as you are creative:
public speaking directly to audience; theatrical demonstration of how the
citizenship is “performed” or behaved; a mix of public speaking/theatrical demo;
multimedia demonstrations (e.g. music, video, images); audience interaction; etc.
4. The presentation must open with a brief (30-second to 1-minute) formal
introduction that announces the type of citizenship your group is focusing on and
an overview/preview of what we’ll experience.
5. A typed, detailed outline turned in before your presentation that announces the
citizenship category and the details of the presentation.
6. All group presentations are due Friday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. (beginning of class).
NO LATE PRESENTATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED – this is our final meeting
for the semester.

Ideas for Content and Presentation Style

 Think of the ways that your group’s selected citizenship category is demonstrated
in everyday life or through special events, festivals, celebrations. Consider
examples of behaviors (e.g. performances) that are unique or help define a citizen
of this category.
 Think of places, events, people, rituals, traditions, etc. that are very important to
this citizenship category. Where and when and how do these citizens show their
“citizenship?” Can you discuss/demonstrate these for us?
 How can you be creative AND specific in demonstrating how a selected
citizenship is behaved? How can you avoid stereotyping/generalizations?
