I. PROBLEM
There is only one telephone in a public booth of a railway station. The
following tables indicate the distribution of callers’ arrival time and duration of
calls. Simulate 100 arrivals of the current system. It is proposed to add another
telephone to the booth. Justify the proposal based on the waiting time of the
callers.

Time Between Arrivals (minutes) 5 6 7

Probability 0.60 0.25 0.15

Call Duration (minutes) 2 3 4 5

Probability 0.10 0.3O 0.50 0.10

II. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Table 1.1 Cumulative Probability and Random Number Range for Customer

Random Number Range

Time Between Cumulative

Probability Min Max
Arrivals Probability

5 0.6 0.6 1 60
6 0.25 0.85 61 85
7 0.15 1 85 100

From the table above, the cumulative probabilities were computed then the
minimum and maximum values were determined in order to get the ranges for
customers arrival intervals. For 5 minutes, random numbers should be in between or
equal to 1 and 60. For 6 minutes, random numbers should be equal to or in between
61 and 85. Lastly, for 7 minutes, values should be in between or equal to 85 and 100.

4 0.5 0.9 41 90
5 0.1 1 91 100

As seen in the second table, the cumulative probabilities were computed then
the minimum and maximum values were determined in order to get the service time
for each customer. For 2 minutes, random numbers should be in between or equal to
1 and 10. For 3 minutes, random numbers should be equal to or in between 11 and 40.
For 4 minutes, random numbers should be in between or equal to 41 and 90. Lastly,
for 5 minutes, values should be in between or equal to 91 and 100.

As seen in the 100 customers’ Simulation Table, customers do not even have to
wait for their turn in order to make calls. It can already be observed in the given

wherein all time of calls are less than arrival time intervals. This means that upon
getting the raw data, conclusions may already be formulated. All Customer Queue is 0
while the booth always has idle time every before a customer arrive.

III. CONCLUSION
A simulation of 100 customers was done in order to identify if the proposal of
constructing another booth is justifiable. However, just like what I’ve mentioned in
the discussion of the simulation table, adding a booth will only cause waste in
investment because even from the raw data, all service times were lower than the
possible arrival time. This means that customers do not even have to wait for their
turn. Thus, the booth is always experiencing idle every after or before a customer.
Therefore, there is no need for another booth to be constructed. In this activity, I
enhanced my excel knowledge with the usage of nested if formula in excel. This
formula really is a helpful tool rather than manually encoding the data most specially
if there are numerous data to be simulated and/or computed.
