SUMMIT -Sustainable Urban Mobility Management Information Technologies
EUROPEAN TERRITORIAL COOPEATION PROGRAMME GREECE – ITALY 2007-2013
The Partnership
THE PROJECT
• SUMMIT is expected to define and test new
solutions for an integrated approach to
sustainable urban mobility aiming at reducing
the environmental impact and social costs of
the city traffic, and increasing the user’s
choice opportunities, providing up-to-date
information within cities such as Patras, Bari,
Brindisi and Corfu.
OBJECTIVES
• ensure the satisfaction of needs for mobility of people and goods transport with
compliance with the goals of reducing energy consumption, environmental costs
and risk to public health;
• improve mobility in cities with particular regard to modes of "sustainable"
transports such as public transport, cycle-pedestrian and combined (intermodal)
transport;
• influence individual behavior by encouraging the user to meet the mobility needs
of transport using environmentally and socially sustainable transports modes;
• reduce the number, length and needs of individual moves by private vehicle.
• encourage individuals, companies or institutions to meet their travel needs
through the efficient and integrated transport systems and resources available in
cities and metropolitan areas;
• improve integration between transport modes and facilitate the interconnection of
existing transport networks, including through the development of specific
information systems and communications.
ACTIONS
LESSONS LEARNT
•It is important that all efforts to develop technologies for mobility management in a specific urban
settlement, to lead in an integrated approach / services.
-Therefore it is important that planners are taking under consideration the needed interoperability and exchange of
data between different systems (e.g traffic management, public transportation information etc).
•Emphasis has to be given in efforts to promote alternative means of transportation, apart from cars
-especially targeting young people and children
.
•All possible technologies for the provision of real time useful information to citizens have to be exploited
-web portal, m-services, public screens.
•In most cases, the effectiveness of planned integrated solution means that an important amount of
investment is needed.
-Therefore, especially in this period of economic crisis, the development of mobility management systems should
include a pilot/trial phase to assure effectiveness and sustainability options.
--This is even more important for initiatives which are based on R&D results.
SUMMIT -Sustainable Urban Mobility Management Information Technologies
• PATRAS
– Development of an integrated mobility management
platform
• BARI
– Central mobility management system
– Plan for freight management system
• BRINDISI
– Platform to use Information Panels allowing for the
provision of information to users, in real time, about traffic
flow to avoid traffic congestion, roadblocks by accidents
• CORFU
– Mobility management tools
