THEORY
Venturimeter is a device to measure flow rate through pipes. The theoretical flow rate (Q theo)
through a venturimeter is given as
Where a2 is cross sectional area at throat and v2 is the velocity at throat given as
2gR ( Sm / S0 - 1) / ( 1 - a 22 / a12 )
v2 =
  … … … … … … (2)
Here Sm is the Specific Gravity (also called Relative Density) of the manometric fluid and So is the
Specific Gravity of flowing fluid.
Qa = cd Q
Qa = cd a 2 v 2
Qa = c d k R' … … … … … … (3)
Where R' = R ( Sm / S0 - 1)
2g/ ( a 22 - a12 )
K= a1a 2
  … … … … … … (4)
K is called the venturimeter constant which depends on the geometry of the venturimeter. cd is the
coefficient of the discharge.
EXPERIMENT-4 1
FIGURE FM4.1 VENTURIMETER
PROCEDURE
1. Note the diameters of venturimeter at inlet & throat and the converging and diverging
angles of the cones.
3. Adjust the flow rate to the maximum value by fully opening the valve.
4. When steady state is established record the manometer readings in the left and right
limbs ( Rl and Rr ) .
5. Collect the water in the collecting tank over a time interval t . Note down the
temperature of water.
6. Reduce the flow rate and repeat the procedure from steps 4 onwards several times.
