Assignment Objective:

Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to understand about the concept of
Mobility, Social Construction of Gender, Gender Identity, Gender Role, under the influence of
modernity and globalization.

Background Question 1:

Social mobility is an act of moving from one social class to another. The amount of movement
up and down the class structure would indicate the extent of social mobility prevalent in the
society. There exist different types of Social Mobility. Vertical mobility, Horizontal mobility,
Intra-generational mobility and Inter-generational mobility are some of them.

Question 1:

Explain any THREE of the following types of Social Mobility with the help of examples
from the circle of your Friend and Family?
 Vertical mobility
 Horizontal mobility
 Intra-generational mobility
 Inter-generational mobility

Background for Question 2:

Gender is linked to socially constructed notions of masculinity and femininity concerning the
psychological, social and cultural differences between males and females; how society attaches
different identities to a male and a female based on the roles expected from them. So, society
makes us look, act, behave and feel “like a girl” and “like a boy”. Globalization has made the
Social Mobility possible for all strata of the society including females. Females now are more
aware of their rights and are more Socially Mobile than before.
Question 2:

Explain and evaluate the view that females in 21st Century have more autonomy to reject
traditional family roles because of a shift in gender ideology, globalization and high level of
social mobility. Explain with the help of examples.
