The general revision has been carried out in accordance with the CEE rules,
which require the highlighting of the functional requirements and the deletion
of the discriminatory elements.

In this specification, the functional design requirements previously expressed in


specification 05892.PIP.GEN.PRG for off-shore plants and
05908.PIP.GEN.PRG. for on-shore plants and, in the specification
00022.PIP.MEC.PRG for calculation of pipe thickness have been unified. The
specification 00022.PIP.MEC.PRG has been deleted.

Installation matters have been transferred in specification


05908.PIP.MEC.SDS.

INTRODUCTION

This specification has been revised taking into consideration also the
requirements of the following documents under preparation in the work group
for international standardisation, such as:

ISO CD 10435 Metallic Gasket for Raised Face Flanges and


Flanged Connections

ISO DIS 3183 - part 1 and 2 Oil and natural gas industries - Technical
delivery conditions for steel pipes for
pipelines for combustible fluids.

ISO DIS 3183 - part 3 Oil and gas industries - Steel pipe for pipelines
-Technical delivery conditions.

At the issue of this revision, the mentioned documents are still a draft, therefore
the same will not be explicitly recalled.

ISO 10434 will replace API Std 600.

ISO 10435 will replace ASME B 16.20.

1 GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This specification defines the criteria and basic design requirements for pipes
and piping components, not submitted to API Spec. 6A and subjected to ASME
B31.3 and API RP 14E .
Special details in addition to the ones subsequently reported shall be taken into
consideration for piping subject to Chapter IX “High Pressure Piping” of
ASME B 31.3.

This specification concerns the design questions. Installation matters are in


Company’s Spec. 05908.PIP.MEC.SDS.

The following specification applies to pipes and piping components located


inside the plant (refineries and production platforms). Pipes and piping
components to be used in pipelines are reported in other documents of Internal
Normalisation.

This specification reports the basic requirements; in the range of these


possibilities defined by the codes some choices of normalisation both for piping
and the relevant components have been carried out. The reference documents
for normalised components are the following:

2 FUNCTIONAL NORMATIVE REQUIREMENT

2.1 Operative environment

In defining the location of the equipment, piping and relevant components, it


shall be paid attention to the environment conditions of the installation place,
defined in the project specification.

It shall be taken into consideration the environment details which may


influence the component reliability, such as:

- minimum and maximum temperatures;


- wind direction and speed;
- elevation in comparison with the sea level;
- condense formation;
- solid presence (sand, dust);
- presence of corrosive or polluting substances;
- seismic events;
- possibility of direct and indirect fulmination;
- mechanical stresses and vibrations during normal operation;
- danger of explosion or fire.

2.2 Functional requirements on project and operating data

2.2.1 Design pressure

Design pressure of a piping system, subject to internal pressure, is defined as


follows:

a) design connected with pressure equipment:

- project pressure of the equipment at which the piping is connected plus


the static columns of the fluid in the piping;

- calibration pressure of the safety valve of the piping / equipment system


plus the static column of the fluid in the piping;

b) discharge lines and discharge centrifugal pumps non protected by safety


valves:

pressure not lower than the one corresponding to the shut-off or the one
resulting from the sum of the maximum suction pressure plus 1.2 times the
differential design pressure;

c) vacuum lines:

pressure correspondent to the absolute vacuum (pressure is expressed in bar


gages).

Design pressure of the line, previously defined, will be assumed in the design
of all the piping and components starting from the operative upstream machine
(or equipment), including the last valve located before the inlet of a lower
design pressure equipment.

In the lines including “by-pass” groups of regulation valves, the previous on-off
valve and the “by-pass” valve shall satisfy the upstream design pressure, while
the on-off downstream group valve can be foreseen for lower pressure, in case
other subsequent on-off do not exist.

The design pressure to be assumed in the design of jacketed lines shall take
account of, in addition to the design pressure defined and assumed as
previously reported, also the pressure acting on the hollow space between the
two pipes (conditions of the internal pipe: empty and therefore at atmospheric
pressure).

2.2.2 Piping design temperature

Design temperature for piping system will be fixed in accordance with the
requirements of the ASME B31.3, considering the fluid design temperature.

In case of piping with internal refractory coating, the design temperature of the
metal shall be calculated for each particular case.

2.2.3 Fluid design temperature

For piping fluid design temperature, it shall be assumed the maximum


temperature foreseen for the fluid in the equipment, machine or piping feeding
the system considered.
In particular, if the fluid comes from equipment with variable temperature
values, it shall be considered the maximum effective temperature in the area
where the pipe shall be connected and not the absolute maximum of the
equipment temperature.

2.2.4 Changeability of the design conditions

In case of piping distributing intermittently different fluids, (for example piping


covered by regeneration phases, catalysts or equivalent) and having completely
different design temperatures and pressures, it shall be considered the various
couples of possible temperature and pressure values, assuming as design values
the ones which create the severest stress situation.

Temporary operating/design conditions (temperature and pressure) causing, for


short periods and within the limits defined by ASME B31.3, higher stresses,
shall not be taken into consideration in determining the piping design
conditions.

2.2.5 Operating temperature

Operating temperature will be valid to determine the insulation thickness and to


analyse the thermal stresses (stress analysis).
Piping operating temperature is the temperature corresponding to the
temperature of the fluid in normal operating conditions.

In case of traced piping with warming fluid, the operating temperature will be
assumed in accordance with one of the following cases:

a) in case of conventional tracing and in case of the 70% of the tracing


temperature exceeds the fluid operating temperature, the operating
temperature of the piping system will be equal to the 70% of the temperature
of the tracing fluid;

b) in case of tracing by use of convector cement, the operating temperature will


be equal to the one of the warming fluid;

c) in case of jacketed piping the operating temperature will be equal to the one
of the warming fluid;

d) in case of the operating temperature is equal or exceeds the tracing


temperature, the operating temperature will be equal to the operating
temperature of the process fluid;

e) in case of electrical tracing lines with self-restricting cable, the temperatur e


to be considered is equivalent to the maximum intervention temperature of
the self-restricting cable;

f) in case of discharges from safety valves on the blow-down line, the


operating temperature will be the greater between the one of blow-down
header and the upstream temperature of the safety valve (PSV).

2.3 Functional, constructional and dimensional requirements, for pipes and


piping components

In the following paragraphs, there are listed the functional, dimensional and
constructional requirements which shall be considered during preparation of
“Piping project specifications”.

Special solutions will be adopted in order to avoid galvanic corrosion for


connections between dissimilar material, with high different capacity.

2.3.1 Requirements for piping thickness calculation

As far as concern to the methodologies and the formulas to be used in the


thickness calculation of a piping under to internal pressure, either in case of
nominal external diameters or internal prefixed ones, refer to ASME B31.3.
For calculation / check of piping thickness subject to external pressure, refer to
ASME Sect. VIII Div. 1.

With reference to the method of calculation and the symbols reported in ASME
B31.3, the following requirements are valid:

a) the negative fabrication tolerance, defined by the piping construction code,


shall always be applied to ‘tm’ value (minimum thickness) calculated in
accordance with ASME B31.3.
Special attention shall be paid in the case of welded pipe, since the
fabrication tolerance differs from the one of seamless pipes.

b) ‘c’ value (the sum of mechanical allowances) shall include the following
contributes:

- the value corresponding to the thread height;

in the following table there is listed for quick application the height value
in accordance with ASME B1.20.1:

- the value of the height of the groove in case of need of mechanical works,
as in the case of grooves to carry out "VICTAULIC" type joints or
equivalents. In lack of prescription about the tolerances of these
performances, it is necessary to considerate a theoretical height of 0.5 mm
as presumed tolerance.

c) corrosion / erosion allowable tolerances equivalent to at least 1 mm shall be


considered for carbon steel, low-alloy and alloy pipe and fittings not
internally coated.

Higher tolerances may be necessary due to the special nature and conditions
of some fluids. No corrosion tolerance is required in advance for stainless
steel, austenitic-ferritic (duplex) or copper and nickel alloy piping.

2.3.2 Commercial thickness

In specification 14350.PIP.MEC.SDS there are listed, for diameters not usually


concerned by normalised “Piping Project Specification”, the following
thickness typologies:

a) normalised thickness in accordance with ASME B36.10 and ASME/ANSI


B36.19 with the attribution of the relevant identification;

b) thicknesses which, on the national market, are considered more


commercial and therefore in stock c/o the retailers of the branch and/or
normal production for the pipe mill as far as the ASME B36.10 and
ANSI/ASME B36.19 are concerned;

c) thicknesses adopted during the preparation of normalised “Piping Project


Specifications” .

It is underlined that as far as the commercial thickness of carbon steel pipes are
concerned only the ones relevant to the seamless construction have been
considered.

An appropriate evaluation is necessary when it is forecast the use of steels or


special alloys and abnormous thicknesses.

2.3.3 Ratings

The ‘rating” is defined as the maximum conditions (pressure and temperature)


which a piping components may be subjected in accordance with
ASME/ANSI B16.5, ASME B16.34, API 6D, or API 6A.
These ratings define as a conventional method, the Classes of Piping Project
Specifications. For the identification of Piping Project Specifications refers to
06732.PIP.MEC.SDS specification.

2.3.4 Piping

Carbon steel, stainless steel and nickel alloy pipes can be requested in welding
or seamless execution. For welded pipes, the welding methods are:

- electrical resistance welding (E.R.W.) (only for carbon steel) DN 2” a 24”

- submerged arc welding with internal pass (S.A.W.) DN ≥ 16”

- electro fusion welding (E.F.W.) all diameters

For copper pipes and its alloys, the submerged arc welding (SAW) process
shall be used.

The normalised “Piping Project Specifications” do not foresee the use of


welded pipes; welded pipes execution can be taken into consideration only in
the case of a remarkable economic impact.
In case of off-shore installation the correct choice of construction typology
shall be in accordance with the API RP 14E.

The dimensional requirements for pipes will be in conformance with the


following international normatives:

- for carbon steel pipes ASME/ANSI B36.10


integrated by API Spec. 5L

- for alloy steel pipes ASME/ANSI B36.10

- for stainless steel pipes and nickel alloy ASME/ANSI B36.19

2.3.5 Flanges

Carbon steel, stainless steel and nickel alloys flanges shall be provided in
forged execution.

For piping conveying sour gas screwed flanges it shall be avoided.

It shall be adopted normalised type flanges, such as:

For nominal diameters 3”, rating class 900, flanges with class rating 1500
shall be used.
For piping conveying water and for normalised diameters from 26” to 42”, it
shall be allowed the use of carbon steel light weight flanges classified with
pressure class 125, on condition that drilling and external diameters to be in
accordance with ASME/ANSI B16.1 (class 125) and to be checked as per
ASME Sect. VIII Div. 1.

The butt-welding fitting can be scheduled in seamless execution or / and


welded but anyway in accordance with the piping execution.

Special pieces not in accordance with ASME B16.9 shall be verified in


accordance with the design code ASME B31.3 and anyway satisfy the

2.3.7 Mitre Bends

For offshore plants it can be used 3 and 5 mitres bends obtained from pipe or
from steel plate. Their utilisation will be limited in accordance with ASME
B31.3 code and with the following specifications:

- fluid inflammability and toxicity;

2.3.8 Socket welding, threaded and brazing type fittings

Socket welding fitting shall be scheduled in forged execution; it can be forecast


for diameters ≤ 2”. As an exception, the threaded fitting can be scheduled for
diameters exceeding the one above indicated and in any case not exceeding 4”
(not in the case of copper alloy materials as Cu/Ni ).

Normalised “Piping Project Specifications” provide fitting to be welded or


threaded up to DN 1” ½ in accordance with ASME B16.11 code.

Pressure classes forecast by “Piping Project Specifications” are:

- for threaded fittings Class 3000 and 6000

- for socket welding fitting Class 3000, 6000 and 9000

- for copper alloy fitting (Cu/Ni) PN 14 and 20

For relation between fitting pressure class and piping thickness shall be in
accordance with ASME B16.11 code. In the following table for easy
consultation is shown the requirements of ASME B16.11.

2.3.9 Valves

Valves shall be scheduled with body in execution forged or cast and according
to the design conditions of the fluid and the maintenance requirements, valves
can have flanged ends, threaded, butt-welding or socket welding ends.

Valve class rating will be in accordance with the following construction


normatives:

- class 800, 1500 e 2500 API 602 and/or BS 5352


for socket or threaded valves

- class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500 and 2500 ASME B16.34, BS 5351
and
for flanged valves and /or butt-welding API 6D (ball valves)

Valves shall respect the requirements reported in the following paragraphs and
in specification 15801.PIP.MEC.SDS.

2.3.9.1 Gate valves

Gate valves with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½ , pressure class 800, 1500 and 2500
and with threaded ends or socket welding, shall be manufactured according to
API Std 602 and/or BS 5352.

Valves with nominal diameters 2” to 24”, class rating 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500
and 2500 with flanged or butt-welding ends, shall be manufactured according
to API Std 600.

Gate valves could be used for every diameter not requiring capacity regulation
for example:

- on-off;

- by-pass of damper valves exceeding 8”;

- when it is requested access through valve for cleaning;

- draining and thermowells.

2.3.9.2 Globe and needle valves

Globe valves with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½, class rating 800, 1500 and 2500
and with threaded end or socket welding, shall be manufactured according to
BS 5352 and API 602.

Valves with nominal diameters 2” to 24”, class rating 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500
e 2500 shall be manufactured in accordance with BS 1873.

Globe valves can be used for nominal diameters 2” to 8” included for the
following utilisation:

- when a regulation is required;


- drain and vent lines conveying vapour;
- by-pass for DN 8” and lower for regulation valves.

Needle valves will be used for diameters ≤ 1” ½ when an accurate regulation it


is required and in replacement of a globe valve.

2.3.9.3 Non-return check valves

Non-return check valves with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½, class rating 800, 1500
and 2500 with threaded or socket welding ends, shall be made according to BS
5352.

Valves with nominal diameters 2” to 24”, class rating 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500
and 2500 with flanged ends or butt-welding and swing type shall be
manufactured according to BS 1868.

Valves with nominal diameters ≥ 2”, class rating 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500,
2500 dual and single plate, wafer or flanged type, shall be manufactured
according to API 594 and/or API 6D.

Non-return check valves will be ball or piston type with spring for nominal
diameters ≤ 1” ½. For larger diameters, it shall normally be used Non Slam or
Tilting disc types.

Non-return check valves dual or single plate between two flanges (wafer) or
flanged, could be used on nominal diameters ≥ 2”. It is not advisable their use
in presence of pumps and reciprocating compressors, and in presence of
corrosive fluids.

2.3.9.4 Plug valves

Plug valves with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½, class rating 600 and 1500, with
threaded or socket welding end, shall be made in accordance with API Std 599.

Valves with nominal diameters 2” to 12”, class rating 150 and 300, with
flanged or socket welding ends, shall be made in accordance with API Std 599.

Valves with nominal diameters 14” to 24”, class rating 150 and 300, with
flanged or butt welding ends and “hypreseal” type shall be made in accordance
with Manufacture’s Standard.

Plug valves shall be used when there is no danger of contamination of the


process fluid by seal grease and in particular for the following applications:

- fuel gas;
- lubricant oil;
- when it is essential a quick and efficient closing;
- when there is the possibility of clogging;
- when there is the probability of coke formation.

2.3.9.5 Ball valves

Ball valves with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½, pressure class 800, 1500 and 2500
with threaded ends shall be made in accordance with BS 5351.

Valves with nominal diameters 2” to 16”, pressure class 150 flanged ends or
socket welding shall be made according to BS 5351.

Valves with nominal diameters ≥ 2”, pressure class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500,
2500 with flanged ends shall be made in accordance with API 6D.

All the ball valves shall be fire safe type and shall have antistatic device.

Ball valves with soft seals can be used as an alternative to plug valves and gate
valves, on condition that the temperature never exceeds 200° C and the
maximum pressures indicated on valve Data Sheets of specification
15801.PIP.MEC.SDS shall be confirmed.

2.3.9.6 Butterfly valves

Butterfly valves with nominal diameters 2” to 20”, with coupling seal, pressure
class 150, wafer type, shall be made in accordance with API 609;

Valves with nominal diameters > 20”, coupling seal, pressure class, flanged
type, shall be made in accordance with API 609 code and with face to face in
accordance with ISO 5752;

Valves with nominal diameters ≥ 3” with metallic seal, pressure class 150, 300,
flanged type, shall be made in accordance with API 609; for class rating 600
shall be as per Manufacturer’s Standard. Face to face shall be in accordance
with ISO 5752.

All butterfly valves with metal seals shall be fire safe.

Butterfly valves coupling seal type can be used on lines conveying water.
Butterfly valves with metallic seal can be used as an alternative to plug valves,
ball valves (where it is not foreseen pig passage) and gate valves. For platforms
the use of butterfly valves shall be in accordance with API RP 14E.

2.3.10 ‘Y’ Strainers

‘Y’ strainers shall be foreseen in execution with body forged or cast and in
accordance with design conditions and fluids, can have flanged, butt-welding,
threaded or socket welding ends.

Strainers with nominal diameters ≤ 1” ½, class rating 800, 1500 and 2500,
threaded or socket welding ends shall be made in accordance with
Manufacturer’s standard, respecting for pressure parts, the required class rating.

Strainers with nominal diameters > 2”, class rating 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500
and 2500, flanged or butt-welding ends, shall be manufactured in accordance
with API 600 and the requirements mentioned in 15701.PIP.MEC.SDS
specification.

2.3.11 Boltings

Stud bolts for flanged components shall be in accordance with ASME/ANSI


B16.5 and /or ASME B16.47 codes and with specification
14368.PIP.MEC.STD. For flanged components not normalised, bolts shall be
sized in accordance with ASME Sect. VIII Div.

Stud bolts shall be forecast completely threaded while nuts shall be of a harder
serie and unfinished products.

All the alloy steel bolts shall be hot dipped galvanised per ASTM A153 Class
‘C’ for sizes < 3/8” e Class ‘D’ for sizes ≥ 3/8”.

Tolerances and studs thread-type shall be in accordance with the following


rules:

- tolerances ASME/ANSI B16.5, ASME B16.47 and


ASME B1.1;

- threads DN ¼ ” to 1” : ASME B1.1 UNC-2A


DN 1” 1/8 to 3” ½ : ASME B1.1 8UN-2A

Dimensions, tolerances and nuts thread type shall be in accordance with the
following rules:

- dimensions ASME B18.2.2

- tolerances ASME B18.2.2 and ASME B1.1

- threads DN ¼ ” to 1” : ASME B1.1 UNC-2B


DN 1”1/8 to 3” ½ : ASME B1.1 8 UN-2B

2.3.12 Gaskets

Gasket type and materials shall be selected in conformance with:

- design conditions or flanges class rating among which they will be inserted;

- flange facing type;

- fluid chemical aggressiveness characteristics.

2.3.13 Material requirements

Materials shall be in accordance with the relevant ASTM and API codes and
shall be used to carry-out various components such as piping, fitting, valves,
filters, boltings etc.
As an alternative it can be submitted to Company for approval of materials
considered equivalent; the proposal shall be motivated and documented and
shall satisfy the analysis requirements and mechanical characteristics expressed
in the mentioned norms.

Carbon steel components shall respect the following requirements:

C = 0.23 maximum

CE = 0.45 maximum

The equivalent carbon shall be calculated with the following formula:

butterfly valves and plug valves, will be forged steel.

2.3.14 Welding and heat treatments

As to welding modalities, electrodes materials, preparation of the pieces and


heat treatments, please refer to normalised “Piping Project Specifications” and
to specifications issued for specific project.

2.3.15 Normalised piping and components

Among the requirements listed inside this specification, some design and sizing
choices have been made in order to prepare Internal Normalisation documents.
The following paragraphs indicate the relevant reference specifications.

The requirements for normalised “Piping Project Specifications” are included


in 06732.PIP.MEC.SDS specification.

Elements for normalised codification and numbering of the line are included in
20198.COO.GEN.SDS specification.

The requirements for Internal Normalisation of vents and drains are included in
06737.PIP.MEC.PRG specification.

Vents and drain valves sizing shall be chosen in function of the details of the
liquid to be drained; in any case they shall not be lower than the following
diameters:

- for lines with DN < 2” will be DN = ½ ”


- lines DN ≥ 2” will be DN = ¾ ”

For lines of diameters over DN 20” and lengths over 30 m the drain will be
minimum 2” and the vent not lower than 1” ½.

2.4 Functional requirements for stress analysis

In order to verify the stresses due to thermal expansion in piping systems and
the choice of support type, it shall be adopted the design criteria defined by
ASME B31.3.
In general, it shall be avoided as far as possible, the use of expansion joints and
cold springs.

The following assumptions shall be taken into consideration to check the


stresses:

- lines to be checked will be selected by examining all the plant pipes;

- a piping system will be considered as a self-bearing structure, working at the


operating conditions indicated in the “Piping Project Specifications”;

- in case the flexibility of the structure is not sufficient, in order to absorb


expansions, it shall be adopted the measures hereafter listed in sequence:

a) elastic supports;
b) changes on the piping layout;
c) loops insertion made from pipes and elbows;
d) expansion joint installation.

The calculation methods shall be as accurate as possible according to the pipe


importance and of the operating conditions.

2.4.1 Temperature for calculation

The temperature to be used for stress analysis verification shall be the one of
the operating piping (T e).

Temperature gaps (∆ ∆ T) to consider in the calculations are indicated in the


following prospectus:

If Te exceeds T maximum ∆T = Te - T minimum


If Te is included between T min. and T max. ∆T = T maximum - T min.

The minimum ambient temperatures are calculated taking into consideration the
minimum temperatures taking place in the coldest month of the year; while the
maximum environmental temperatures are calculated taking into consideration
the ambient temperatures taking place in the hottest month of the year.

During checking of not-coated piping, it shall be taken into consideration the


plants located in areas where the thermal excursion between day and night is
remarkable.

2.4.2 Circuits with more than one operation temperature

For circuits with one normal operating temperature and a second different for
temporary periods, it shall be analysed both the conditions.

2.4.3 Jacketed lines

For external deformations the jacketed lines will be considered as an only pipe
submitted to an ideal temperature giving an expansion corresponding to the one
of the two concentric pipes (expanded in different measure).

2.4.4 Temporarily closed lines

For lines connected with two or more equipment of which one operating and
the other non-operating, it shall be analysed which temperature will be settled
in the dead branches, and considering it in the verification of the stresses.
In the frequent cases of pumps with reserve, when the pump is supplied with
“by-pass” on the check and on-off valves assembly, it will be assumed for the
spare branch a temperature equal to 70% of the operating temperature.

2.4.5 Stresses on equipment

Stresses produced by pipes and piping components (due to weight, expansion


strength etc.) on vessels and machines shall be checked so that they form part
of the values foreseen by the normatives defined in the following paragraphs.

Any allowable stresses supplied by the Manufacturer’s machines will be used if


more conservative than the requirements of the mentioned rules.

2.4.5.1 Stresses on pumps

The check will be carried out in conformance with API 610, for pumps with
discharge nozzles up to 4” included, and NEMA SM 21 for pumps with
discharge nozzles of larger dimensions. In the latter case, it shall be applied the
formulas of the following paragraphs, modified as follows:

- paragraph 5.06.1 - Resulting from the forces and moments acting on

2.4.5.2 Stresses on centrifugal compressors

The verification will be checked in conformance with API 617.

2.4.5.3 Stresses on turbines

The verification will be carried-out in conformance with NEMA SM 21 and


NEMA SM 22 specification.

2.5 Supporting functional requirements

2.5.1 Definite Supporting

Supporting design shall be in accordance with 05329.PIP.MET.PRG


specification and shall be carried out the same time of pipe design using as far
as possible, the normalised typologies.
Anyway, supporting will be designed in such a way to satisfy the results of the
stress analysis verification; in general, the following rules shall be complied
with:

- to avoid that the supports create difficulties of access for the machines or
manoeuvring of the valves;

- where necessary, the supports shall have the possibility of regulation to


allow the setting up;

- it shall be considered the local effects of buckling on large pipes, by


eventually adopting appropriate reinforcing plates. The same is valid for
equipment shell and caps exploited as supporting surface;

- pipe supports connected with pumps or reciprocating compressors, shall be


as independent as possible and shall have its own foundations in order to
avoid vibration transmission;

- line supporting shall be designed taking into consideration the load due to
the pipe full of water during the hydraulic test;

- where possible, the support location shall take into consideration also the
roof support of the main and secondary structures, already existing;

- to avoid galvanic corrosion among materials with different potential, piping


shall be insolated from the support by means of insolation material;

- to avoid electrostatic discharge the lines supported by insolating supports


shall be connected in some points to the platform structure.

2.5.2 Temporary supports for transportation

For off-shore installations, it shall be considered the possibility of a temporary


supporting in order to compensate stresses or vibrations during transportation.

Temporary supporting shall be well highlighted and well marked, since it shall
be removed before commissioning.

2.6 Functional requirements on sewers

Design requirements for sewer system for on-shore and off-shore plants are
mentioned respectively in 06589.PIP.MEC.PRG and 06590.PIP.OFF.PRG
specifications.

Sewer systems shall be designed in such a way to avoid fire propagation (in
case of oil or accidentally oily systems), to make easy inspection and easy
cleaning operations.

The system shall be sloping type, in order to make current washing easy; for
this purpose, the speed of conveyed fluid shall be 1 m/sec.
The conveyed fluids shall have a temperature not exceeding 50° C and the
sewer system will be provided drain wells pits in correspondence of branches to
break the long sections of pipes.

In on-shore plants the drain wells shall be located at a distance not exceeding
30 m each from other in on-site area and not exceeding 100 m in the off-site
area.

There are four types of discharges:

- white system: discharges free of oil or other polluting agent;


- oily system, with siphon reaching the drain wells to completely remove the
oily residuum from the wells. Siphons shall be able to carry a 200 mm seal
head;
- accidentally oily system, with siphon departing from each drain well (with
200 mm seal head);
- chemical system, to collect the water contai ning acids or alkali, in such a
quantity not to allow the conveying in the accidentally oil system. This
system shall be separated and water shall carry to an appropriate
neutralisation basin.

2.7 Functional requirements on fire fighting lines

Fire fighting system design shall respect the request of 20199.VON.SAF.SDS


specification for onshore installations, 20200.GPF.SAF.SDS and
05887.OPF.SAF.SDS for offshore installations.

2.8 Functional requirements for external piping protection

Piping external protection (antiskid , insulation and painting) shall be designed


in accordance with the requirements of specification 20000.VAR.PAI.FUN,
03652.VAR.PAI.SDS, 03653.VAR. PAI.SDS and 02952.SLI.COR.SPC.

The application of piping antiskid (antigelo) protection will be decided on the


basis of the number of the coldest days in a year and the minimum temperatures
occurred.

Process pipes shall be freeze protected with heating and adequate insulation.
The heating system will vary according to the conveyed fluid and the
temperature at which it shall be maintained and also the discontinuity of the
service. Valved branch connections for draining of the lines should be provided
in case of long term shutdowns are scheduled.

Branch connections which form underground piping coming out of ground


shall be insulated until the on-off valve, or for want of this valve, until an
height of 500 mm from the ground.

Insulation shall be calculated varying according to the piping operating


temperature and to the environmental conditions.
Ambient temperature taken as reference will be deducted as a medium of the
minimum temperatures occurred in the coldest month of the year.
Insulation thicknesses shall be checked for each project at ambient conditions.
For cold insulation it shall be carried out a vapour barrier made by two layers of
waterproofing putty with “glass coat” between the two layers

Painting shall be in accordance with Data Sheets of each equipment or with


specifications issued for this project.

2.9 Ergonomics

There are not applicable ergonomics subjects.

2.10 Safety

Design of fire fighting protection of steel structure work shall be in accordance


with 20199.VON.SAF.SDS e 20200.GPF.SAF.SDS. specifications.
The following activities shall be part of the design:

- definition of the areas subject to fire danger;

- identification of structures concerned by piping support, air coolers,


equipment of total operating weight exceeding 10 tons, heaters, boilers and
horizontal and vertical tanks;

- definition of protection time in accordance with ASTM E-119


(temperature / time diagram);

- materials selection based upon tests according to ASTM E-119 code.

2.11 Requirements for Quality Management and Quality Assurance

Any requirements concerning Quality Management and Quality Assurance are


included in management specification attached to bid.
