Evart industrial arts program built from the ground up

curriculum.
Revived in 2017, saws are
spinning at the high school
and middle school as the
program is back in action.
The Board of Education
voted in December to com-
mit annual funding to the
program.
Larry Johnson instructs
the industrial arts classes
at each level. A longtime
teacher and school admin-

a contractor in his spare
time.
This fall, he was com-

classroom.
“Every fall I get this little

Evart Robotics team starts small, thinks big

EVART — Evart High School

students stood around a yellow
cube in a classroom on a recent
Friday afternoon.
Using their hands, they picked
it up, turned it over and pretend-
ed to launch it.
In a few short months, the
students will be responsible for
creating a robot that can do those
tasks itself.
The Evart Wildcats FIRST
Robotics team enters its second
year with some experienced
leaders, some newcomers and
numerous challenges ahead.
The early stages involve brain-
storming, writing ideas on a
whiteboard and wiping them off
as they narrow down options.
For picking up and transport-
ing cubes, a claw would make the
most sense, the team reasoned.
But it could be inaccurate, like
the claw machines in restauar-
ants. The deisgn would need to
secure the cube from below.
The FIRST Robotics competi-
tion this year involves various
tasks that require the robot to
place cubes in hard-to-reach
locations for points. This year’s
ruffle is the robot must climb a
