DANGLING MODIFIER
NABILLA 11
MISPLACED MODIFIER

When a word, phrase or clause

that is improperly separated
from the word it describes.
Hence, this error in a sentence somewhat confused people
MISPLACED MODIFIER

TYPES:

Misplaced adjectives are incorrectly separated from the nouns it modifies and
almost always distort the intended meaning.

The torn student's book lay on the desk -> the student's torn book lay on the desk.

Placement of adverbs can also change meaning in sentences.

We ate the lunch that we had brought slowly -> We slowly ate the lunch that we
had brought.

Misplaced phrases may cause a sentence to sound awkward and may create a
meaning that doesn't make sense.

They saw a fence behind the house made of barbed wire -> they saw a fence made
of barbed wire behind the house.

Misplaced clauses may also cause a sentence to sound awkward and may create
a meaning that doesn't make sense.

Hannah piled all of her clothes in the hamper that she had worn -> Hanna piled all
of her clothes that she had worn in the hamper.
EXAMPLE
The man walked toward the car carrying a briefcase
EXAMPLE
The man walked toward the car carrying a briefcase

The sentence suggests that the car is carrying a briefcase

EXAMPLE
The man walked toward the car carrying a briefcase

Misplaced modifiers can usually be corrected by moving the

modifier to a more sensible place in the sentence, generally next

to the word it modifies.

EXAMPLE
The man walked toward the car carrying a briefcase

Let's move the modifier next to the word it modifies.

EXAMPLE
While carrying the briefcase, the man walked toward

the car

Now it is the man who carries the briefcase

DANGLING MODIFIER

When a phrase or clause that is

not clearly and logically related
to the word.
Which is why the sentence fails to specify anything to which the modifier can refer.
DANGLING MODIFIER

Unlike misplaced modifier, it cannot be corrected by simply moving it to a

different place in the sentence.
Usually it appears at the begging or at the end of a sentence.
EXAMPLE
Looking toward the west, a funnel shaped cloud

stirred up dust.
EXAMPLE
Looking toward the west, a funnel shaped cloud

stirred up dust.

There's a dangling modifier on the beginning of the sentence.

EXAMPLE
Looking toward the west, a funnel shaped cloud

stirred up dust.

1. leave the modifier as it is

EXAMPLE
Looking toward the west, a funnel shaped cloud

stirred up dust.

2. Change the main part of the sentence so that it begins with the

term actually modified.

EXAMPLE
Looking toward the west, I saw a funnel shaped cloud

stirred up dust.

This change will put the modifier next to the term it modifies.
ANOTHER
EXAMPLE

Having been fixed the night before, Priscilla could

use the car.

ANOTHER
EXAMPLE
Since the car had been fixed the night before,

Priscilla could use the car.

Having been fixed the night before, Priscilla could

use the car.
